"Popped in here yesterday after a long drive home from up north. Pub was fairly busy. I went around the side of the bar by the hatch so I could see what was in the fridge. I waited patiently and was largely preoccupied by their...adorable springer spaniel. A lady then came over to help me a senior looking member of the team (in her 50s). As she did so, she acknowledged a couple on the main face of the bar (who turned up well after me) saying i'll be with you in a minute I asked her about what beers they had and wanted help picking something nice and non-alcoholic for my pregnant wife. We VERY briefly talked through options and again, whilst doing so she acknowledged the couple at the bar saying sorry, I won't be a minute Now I thought I'd decided on a drink for my wife, but the barmaid said sorry, I'm a bit confused by what you're after Rather baffled, I said a drink and possibly to grab some food we're sat outside She abruptly poured the first drink as if id put her out. I went round to the main bar to check the beer pumps and what they had on (not alot) and when I asked she replied well yes, just Peroni in the fridge and what you see here as if it were obvious or that I was being thick. Then for a THIRD time apologised to the couple now stood next to me. It was at this point I'd had enough, so I said sorry, am I not welcome here or something, should I not be ordering a drink? You don't seem to want to want my custom and you keep apologising to this couple as if they are for some reason more important You are being rude Now instead of apologising, saying they were extremely busy or explaining perhaps Id been stood in the wrong place she just said no i wasnt, no i wasn't So still ZERO effort or ounce of hospitality towards me. My final response was to say Dont worry about the drink- may I suggest that you get yourself some manners and additional staff I headed out the door, apologising to those nearby as to show the lady an example of basic etiquette 2 locals then had the audacity to try and defend her! Such a shame, such a bad experience! I feel i was victimised for being a middle aged male, had my pregnant wife been at the bar i can't imagine them treating her that way. Also I am affiliated with the maintenance of Plashetts Park which is opposite the pub, had said to my partner that it would be nice to meet her and bubba there for dinner tea on a regular basis once I'd finished duties. I now have zero intention of going or confidence that I'd be welcomed. Very disappointed and disheartened"

Perfect Friday evening. We had great food and great beer in a great garden. Myself, wife, kids and friends all enjoyed ourselves.

The best Roast Turkey dinner I’ve eaten in a pub ever! Always a friendly welcome. Several visits over the last year and can’t fault any of them.

We have visited this lovely, cozy pub with great, well laid out, patio and garden space. Popped in on the off chance yesterday and it was the same high quality, excellent service and very cheerful happy staff, where nothing was too much trouble. Well worth...a visit.

First take away visit to the Halfway House and would highly recommend. When collecting I was greeted and made to feel welcome. The roast dinners were very well cooked; tasty, plentiful and offer a good choice of meats and vegetables. Good choice of desserts and...I thoroughly enjoyed the Banoffee pie. Excellent value for money.

This traditional pub met all our requirements. We went early evening and enjoyed a drink in the sunny garden before moving indoors to eat. There is an open fireplace which would be a bonus in the colder months. The menu was varied, with plenty of choice and there was a specials board as well. The food came quickly and we were very impressed with the quality. It was piping hot and the portions were generous, so good value for money. The staff were attentive and dealt with all our requests efficiently. We would definitely recommend the Halfway House.

This was our first visit for the four of us and will probably be the last. The crab salad was nice with generous portions of crab. The puddings were poor, however with the spotted dick being quite hard and was clearly overcooked. Our main complaint was the attitude of the staff who were a bit miserable although it was a very hot day! When the waitress was asked if one of our party could have onion free gravy we were told it was not possible. Surely any decent chef could rustle up gravy without onion to go with the roast beef. Another moan was that when the bill came, it just showed a total amount with nothing itemised. When we asked if we could have the bill itemised, the staff seemed to get...

"Honestly...one of the best pub restaurants I have ever visited! We chose to eat here as it was recommended via Alistair Sawday, and it did not disappoint. The food, atmosphere, hygiene and service were all 5* when we visited last night. We sat inside, by candlelight, and ordered 2 starters (the Rye smoked mackerel with buttercream sauce and the heritage tomato salad and 2 mains (the beef burger with fries and the hake with toasted ciabatta and garden peas . It was truly exquisite! We both cleaned our plates (and we don't usually do that! . My only mild criticism is that I didn't realise the hake dish would include bacon lardons they certainly added to the flavour, but as an ethical pescatarian, this could have ruined the meal for me (I didn't allow it to, but 10 years ago when I was more strict it may have upset me . I may have simply missed this ingredient when reading the menu, and I didn't make the waiting staff aware of my dietary preferences, so I accept this was my fault and not theirs. It's just something for other pescatarians reading this review to be aware of. I have absolute confidence that they would prepare the hake dish without the bacon lardons if you asked. As for me....my boyfriend gleefully took them from my plate and demolished them himself! We also enjoyed a medium glass of wine each my boyfriend (who is very particular loved the tempranillo and I had their Italian pinot grigio. Our entire meal would have been less than £60, but with the current government incentive scheme to eat in, it came to less than £40!! We tipped generously as they truly deserved it. We will 100% be returning and can't advocate them enough."
