"We journeyed to Masham to sample the best beer in the world Theakston’s Old Peculier at its source. As the WB is the brewer’s own pub and just yards from the brewery, we were not disappointed. The ales are perfectly kept and deliciously fresh and flavoursome. Meanwhile, the WB surroundings and furnishings etc are vintage though not dowdy (the restaurant part of the pub is more contemporary and light) and there’s a good fire going when it’s cold. Add to all this good service, a few decent bar food staples, a friendly crowd of local regulars, and a characterful pub dog (Theo) and you just might have the ideal English pub."

"the black sheep brewery in masham is worth a visit for several reasons, not least the lands of the yorkshire dales and its picturesque villages with the remains of tour de france bungalow, bikes and all kinds of paraphernalia on our visit decorated today. there is a visitor center with a “baa.r and bistro”, which serves fresh fayre from local products from light bites to main courses) and several black sheep bee on tap and bottled. Baa..r bistro in the visitor center but the highlight must be the brewery tour £6.95 for adult, £5.95 for seniors), which takes about 75 minutes. the tour begins with a sitting conversation about the long brewing history of the family theakston in sharing complex, but our guide made it very entertaining) with video material and rehearsing the best and hops to smell and taste before the tasted part of the tour begins in the boiler room."

"A previous reviewer suggested that this is the quintessential English tearoom and I would disagree, simply on the basis of what is on offer here. Rather than simple pots of tea with scones and cakes, which I would suggest is the quintessential image of a tearoom, I have enjoyed everything here from a Full English, burger and chips, bacon butties, a great range of toasted sandwiches, salads etc., as well as the aforementioned scones and cakes. I would suggest therefore that this is a fine example of a typical British cafe.This has been our preferred cafe in Masham for several years now and the quality of food on offer and the excellent service has consistently been top class. They now offer plentiful outdoor seating in the Market Place as well as indoor seating and the high number of people enjoying hot drinks and snacks in the sunshine was testament to this cafe’s continuing popularity."

"A great little gem of Yorkshire. I can not recommend this lovely little pub enough. My first meal out in so long and lovely home cooked food and the sticky toffee pudding was to die for and I dont have desserts that often but this was one of the best I've ever had. The staff so warm and friendly it's a must to go and try"

"We called here during a staycation in West Tanfield. The Staff were all lovely, very friendly and helpful. The setting was great too, with a local feel to it and good music in the background. There's quite a few choices on the menu but it's quite expensive for bar meals. Some of us had quiche one night and although it tasted ok it was a tiny slice of quiche for just under £14. Served with what tasted like oven chips, and salad garnish and coleslaw which were nice. I had a cheese and chutney sandwich another night and it was very nice , but again expensive at just under £9. Desserts were very nice and I enjoyed a chocolate brownie with ice cream. Drinks were very nice too, with some locally produced brews. I saw someone eating fish and chips and it did look like a substantial portion and looked good. Steak pie is served in a bowl with inches of gravy surrounding it. Served with a very small side dish with a tiny portion of vegetables and a few chips. Portion sizes seem to vary depending on what you order. A bowl of chips was a substantial portion. The bar has a lovely atmosphere and Staff are very nice. We didn't visit the beer garden because the weather wasn't good. I would definitely return for drinks but maybe not food. West Tanfield itself has a good nature reserve and at this time of year there's masses of blackberry bushes. Not too far away is the lovely little village of Bedale. A fantastic hidden gem with the best high street I've ever seen. Loads of independent shops selling at reasonable prices and lots of great coffee shops, cafes and restaurants."
