The Anglers Retreat

Thank you Pierre for hosting our reception for my Aunt's funeral. Food was nicely done, room was very pleasant.

Food was nice but expensive and portion on the smaller side. Went for the chicken burger, the salad consist on one small slide of lettuce and one slide of tomato, that's it. Chicken was nice though. Limited menu too.

Not actually terrible, but also not great. Waiting staff who never (ever) scan the tables or go beyond order taking. Food which is OK but not great. If they are aiming for young families, they might get away with it, for a more discerning clientele, no chance.

Went today for fathers day early dinner. The pub and atmosphere is very nice, staff are friendly but had to wait a long time for orders being taken and food arriving. My dish was terrible and I should have sent it back to the kitchen and ordered something else, but didn't want to kick up a fuss as it we were celebrating and I had a baby with me. We decided to give The Retreat a ago for a Sunday lunchtime drink and eats as we hadn’t been there in a longtime. Unfortunately first impressions were not good as the pub was cold. We only wanted something small to eat but they don’t do anything apart the Sunday roast menu. The pub itself is nice inside but absolutely no atmosphere, and just too cold to enjoy the drink we had, and I don’t think playing some very depressing jazz music helped. It looks like the pub had lost its identity (the French bistro is no more) and felt soulless, which is such a shame. I really hope they can go back to basics and make the pub great again.

We waited absolutely ages for our food. When it did eventually arrive two of the dinners were wrong and had to be sent back. All of the dinners were luke warm. Three were sent back as we were told they could be re-heated, the rest of our group didn't want to wait any longer. Presentation was awful. I have worked in the food industry so I know what I am talking about. Veg dumped in the middle of the plate with almost raw beef on top with a Yorkshire pudding on top of that with a few potatoes around the edge. The Yorkshire pudding was dripping in fat/grease, which had soaked into everything beneath it. Even the food at the bottom of the pile wasn't hot. Long burnt black item on most plates tha...

Our fried chicken was served cold and soggy, the Camembert was also served cold and still in the shop wrapping! In addition to this it was tiny and came with 1 slice of bread that was toasted on one side, we requested more bread when the Camembert was placed on the table (before realising it was cold) we were then informed there would be a charge on £1 “but we can then give you loads” in which we agreed but it never came! The bar staff were all stood behind the bar chatting and nobody even came to see how we were getting on with our meal. The rest of the food came in very small portions considering the price!
