"Poor Value, Ok-ish Food. Visited last night, had been to Spitalfields a couple of years ago and wasn't hugely impressed. Nothing's changed to make me want to visit again I'm a believer in good food cooked well fairly priced, but what ended up as a £16 Fish/Chips/Mushy Peas doesn't bode well. The peas tasted of nothing, had to add salt (which I never usually add to food at the table) and vinegar. Once done I was still hungry (again not usual) as the portion of chips was tiny. So ended up having the £8:50 cheese plate. The cheese was served at room temp which makes a nice change from places where it appears to pass the kitchens thought process that someone might order the cheese so...read more"

in a rainy day I decided to try their fish and chips. it was a good meal, although it was average. the decoration of the room is really beautiful and the staff could have been more beautiful.

Branch that failed rather than the food. This branch of Canteen wasn't great. The food was cold when it finally arrived and the service was extremely slow. Shame really because the one in Canary Wharf was great.

if they are in the Southbank area in london and they are in the mood for the 4pm tee, please go this place and ask them for sharing tea tea tea and enjoy the best traditional cakes and sandwich mix they will have in london. it can be done, but if there is a nice day outside.

the British food was very much in vogue a few years ago, we all talked about homemade classics, saw the great british bake in our hordes and while we still do the latter, we seem to like from the love with the British food revival. now it's about slowly boiled pork, nikkei everything, crazy merge and everything they can serve on a slide.

we usually come to the breakfast or brunch as they have outside seats of the south bank. it is a good, solid British menu, with clearly defined ingredients, fair trips and friendly staff. her avocado on toast with posing egg is as good as it gets, and she cheddar omelette very pleasant; good selection of drinks including limonade, apple wine and wine.

I've been here several times more often for lunch than dinner. The service is friendly and the ambiance is generally pretty relaxed. The food is mostly British staples. The prices may be slightly higher than normal, but I think this is down to the food being sourced. I particularly like the fact you can order brunch or breakfast items late in the day. The Sunday roasts options are particularly good too.

I love this place, decent home cooked food, good beers and a nice cup of tea. The pie and mash or chicken and chips are a favourite plenty for veggies and do leave room for pudding. Only gripe is the slowness of service, you wait an age for the staff to take your order, which is a bit disappointing when there are usually plenty of them and you want your dinner! Speed up the service and the place will be perfect.

Ok, but Shoreditch Canteen better!. I went to this South Bank branch of Canteen as I love the one in Spitalfields Market. The food was great but the atmosphere was nothing like the same. The service was average, we even had to wait outside in the rain (under one of the parasoles) for 40 mins for a table that we had booked! Don't get me wrong, its a good place for lunch or all day breakfast as the food is simple but refined, but don't bother if it looks full.

Back in 2011, Canteen was a place you'd go for brunch. It was cool, relaxed, food was good and with its low booth-style fit out, also a bit trendy. That was 2011 and like me, it was matured over the years; in 2015, it seems entry into Canteen requires a pram...and I'm ok with that given I now have one When it comes to child-friendly establishments, I can think of few on the Southbank which are better suited to a young family; the expansive, the open-plan dining room gives ample space for you to manoeuvre and park even the most tank-like of buggies which is something you would never consider unless put in that position As far as the food goes though, well, that seems to still be...read more
