"We were then seated at our table and noticed a set menu offering 2 or 3 courses for a set price. My partner asked if he could do the 2-course deal for a main and dessert, while ordering a starter separately. The server, who had glasses and red hair and appeared to be a manager, abruptly said no without further explanation. This made the atmosphere awkward, as if we had done something wrong within minutes of arriving. Our server took the rest of our order without writing it down or repeating it back to us. As a result, my partner received the wrong starter. When he pointed this out, he was told that it would take 20 minutes to get the correct dish, and the server seemed annoyed. Eventually, we were passed off to another server, who was much more attentive. Despite the other servers being fine and the food being enjoyable, the overall experience was tainted by the initial service. We had high expectations for this place, but it seems to be let down by some of the staff. We probably won't be returning for a meal. Hopefully, they can address these issues. Sincerely, four hospitality workers. (There are more negative aspects we could mention, but this review is already long enough.)"

Modern and fun location. Beer was good, benches not too comfy for a long stay. Staff were friendly and they had good music.

Great whisky cocktail bar with very knowledgable staff. Welcoming and friendly to newcomers to the city and excellent cocktails on offer. Left feeling warm inside.

The food was nice, the service was ok, but we had to wait so long for our main course after we had our starters and our drinks. It was very loud and difficult to have a conversation, sorry to say that we wouldn't return.

I was recommended the Devils advocate by a work colleague and it did not disappoint. The food was excellent as was the extensive drinks menu. Staff were very friendly but a big shout out to Declan, who in my opinion, went the extra mile for us. Incredibly knowledgeable and extremely attentive which added to a great night. 5 out of 5. Definitely will be going back

I had visited this restaurant about two years ago and absolutely loved it. However, on my recent visit, the music was excessively loud, giving more of a nightclub vibe than a pleasant dinner atmosphere. The steak was delicious and the dessert was enjoyable. The cocktail I ordered was good but overpriced for a single glass. Overall, due to the loud music and expensive drinks, I am not sure if I would return.

I have visited this restaurant several times now, and each time has been fantastic. This time, my family and I (a group of 5) visited on a busy Friday night and everyone enjoyed it. The atmosphere is great, the food is delicious, and the service is top-notch. Amy and Callum took care of us and were very attentive and friendly. All the staff at Devils Advocate seem to go the extra mile, and nothing was too much trouble. We will definitely be returning again!

I booked a meal for my husband's birthday, when we arrived I was surprised by how loud the music was downstairs. I guessed it would be less so in the dining part but I was wrong, as it is open plan it was so loud that we could not talk whilst we were having our meal. The food was good and tasty, the portion sizes were great. My smoked paprika garlic picanha steak was cooked to perfection and the truffle and parmesan chips were tasty. Hubby had the vegetarian option red lentil ragu aubergine, feta, herbs, toasted focaccia which he enjoyed. The service was attentive and efficient. We were going to stay and sample the whiskey flight and some cocktails but we ate up and left. Overall disappointi...

We came here two years ago and absolutely loved it, so much so that we wanted to visit again on our return visit to Edinburgh this month. This time it was such a disappointment. The starter was nice but the main courses really did not reflect the expensive price tag. Both mains we ordered were quite underwhelming. I ordered the hake £23 it does not come with a side and as you can see from the picture all you get is a mid-sized piece of fish with some sauce, 2 cherry tomatoes and a few stems of broccoli. I had eaten a small mouthful of the fish and half a tomato before I decided to take this picture! unfortunately we didn’t get a picture of my partner’s main but again, we felt it overpriced....

The bar itself is really nice. It’s just located up some steep steps on Advocates Lane. When we entered it was busy so we remained standing with our drinks. After a while we noticed some people leaving from up stairs. I decided to walk upstairs to check if a table was free. No longer than 10 seconds and I was being chased and then interrogated on why I was up there by one of their staff. The little blonde man said “Can I help you? You must ask me for a table before you sit down” and on that note, I was ushered back down stairs. Finally found a table downstairs after a couple left which was ideal. Within 5 mins , the same guy was back berating us for bringing in some chocolate treats which ha...

"new kapitel has caught my attention after I was on top ten on trip advisor only months after the opening in the oktober last year. that and the fact that it is open for my early january birthday, made it the perfect place to celebrate to become a little older. I was with the man and his family. the man is quite used to my taste and good to the kind of kitchen that would appeal to me for a special occasion; his family not so much and I was filled with shame as his mother scornful went through the menu trying to find something she would enjoy. I've eaten with the family of the man, and I know they enjoy eating, so I think it's a failure of the menu that it is not accessible. the benming always blooming and garnish can appeal to some, but for others it is overcomplicated and it is necessary to find a balance between the two. we start with the starters and I go for venison sour wort pithvier. the venison was underheated and incredibly dry, to the happiness the sourded a little moisturizing and so saved the whole dish, but the aromen were quite not clear, except the garnitur of plastered mushrooms I thoroughly enjoyed. for the largest part we chose a fish dish for our main,- sea trout, smoked muddles, petersilien and coast herbs. where the starter fell, the main recording is getting back. the dish is rich and creamy, and each element adds the complexity of the taste as a whole, without disturbing. the concept is now an old one, and it would be deceptive if it had not worked, as it would essentially pay with this place. I enjoyed my meal in new chapter, although I do not agree with it is stellar status under the hierarchy of edinburgh eateries. it is top ten position is just a flash in the pan of hot popularity, and in time it will be plated in the upper half of the middle stage where it belongs. and that is where it belongs, the dishes can be plated with a michelin star in understood, and the venue and the supporting media has the clean lines and empty slate look of fine but eat the team has a long gone to go if that is their real aim. at the end, although it was a beautiful meal, and cheap (at the moment I would not be surprised to see their prices slowly rise) and the man’s mother found something they enjoyed and that is the most important."
