"Went down Ballycastle town for dinner. We had wanted fish and chips and had heard there was a nice chipper at the waterfront but because it was Monday evening it was closed. So Marconi’s restaurant was close by and we managed to get a table. First we waited ages to be served. We didn’t really mind that because we were glad of the table when we hadn’t made a booking. Eventually we were served. Then it took another age for the food to be served. Three out of four of us ordered the battered fish and chips and my daughter ordered the beef burger. When the food came I knew straight away that it wasn’t going to be a nice meal. The battered fish pon all three plates was overcooked to a very dark brown colour with the ends being rock hard crispy. It was also so so greasy. Obviously it is deep fried fish but it’s deep fried everywhere else we get the same dish and the batter is always light and fluffy. We didn’t complain because we were absolutely starving at this stage. The chunky chips were alright, again overcooked but not as much as the fish. It also came with mushy peas. We ate the dish, I shared a small bit with my daughter cause I couldn’t finish it because it was horrible. My sons complained about it also but they ate theirs. We paid up and left. The young members of staff were nice and polite. I left a tip because of that, not the food. When we went back to the hotel all three of us felt a bit sick after the meal. I felt the worst and went to bed hoping to go asleep. An hour and a half later I ended up vomiting the entire meal back up. The boys didn’t. They still felt a bit sick, they said it was one of the worst meals they’ve ever had. I don’t think the fish was in any way gone off, it was the disgusting batter. Surely a restaurant that seems to specialise in fish dishes could manage a nice battered fish. Seemingly not. My daughter said her burger was fine, not bad, not good, just fine. Complete waste of money. Also, I saw a senior member of staff clapping her hands to get the attention of customers to bring them to their table. I was shocked at that behaviour."

"The Spice Club. 25-27 Main Street, Cockermouth Cumbria, LA13 9LE Tel: 01900 823146 Date of Visit: 23rd September 2023. A fishing buddy gave me the Heads up on this restaurant up in Cockermouth. After reading some less than kind reviews on Trip Advisor, I was more than apprehensive about going up there and trying it out. However, I need not have worried about it at all. I Landed up in Cockermouth right in the middle of the Cockermouth Food Festival and the place was packed and parking a nightmare. As I was quite early and not expecting the restaurant to open until 1730 hours, so I took advantage and had a look round the excellent food stalls. Making my way slowly along Main Street until I found the very smart, clean and comfortable 60-seater Spice Club, as it was only 15 minutes past 4, I was quite surprised to see that it looked like it was open. On entering I was invited to take a seat close to the window with a good view of all that was going on around me. The waiter, by the name of Naz, greeted me with a warm friendly smile and showed me to a table. I placed my order for two poppadom’s with a pickle tray, Sheek Kebabs, Chicken Madras, pilau Rice, and a Peshwari Nan. Service was slick and prompt, the food was piping hot when it arrived, Sheek kebabs were probably not the best I’ve ever had but certainly not the worst either. Chicken Madras with big chunks of soft succulent chicken, a nice thick sauce which was perfectly spiced and a nice flavoured Pilau rice and one of the nicest Peshwari naans ever with a layer of melted honey drizzled on the top which added a nice sweetness, a bit sticky on the fingers but hey, no problem. A pint of Cobra to wash it all down and hey, I was a very happy man! Well-staffed, friendly smiling people, and certainly no hint whatsoever of “get em fed and get em out. Would I go back? You bet your life I would. Price was a tad over £35.00 I will award this establishment 9/10 my only disappointment was they did not do a take-out menu so I will have to try and print one out"
