"Friendly pub with a good menu. We both enjoyed our lunches though I have to say the pie was great, better than the fish and chips (the batter was not the greatest very yellow and not as crisp and bubbly as some but the fish was good). Portion size is very generous. Lunch time deals are good. Would def recommend and would go back. Bill was around £35 for two courses and a drink can't argue. Didn't even need a dinner that night monster sized sticky toffee pudding! Quite a few people in on lunch time (it was valentines though) which is great to see."

"I truly cannot fault this fine place at all. I used them recently for my son's 18th birthday for family and friends. In the run up to the event, the lovely landlord Jon was super accommodating, friendly and very responsive for all my emails. We had over 20 people for the event and the pub were so great in organising all the food including all our dietary requirements. The staff that work here were all super friendly and very accommodating. I would highly recommend this fine pub to anyone."

"This was the first meal out since our son had been in and out of hospital during the last 1 month with appendicitis... This came up in conversation with the staff when we were being seated and we asked if he could have a hot chocolate with Marsh mallows (something he had been asking us for). This was not something they had on the menu but the very nice lady who who had to spoken to us decided to go out and bought him a special mug and the Marsh Mallows to make it! The food was great, as was the service but we will always remember how they went the extra mile to do something nice for our son!"

"The eight bells is my local, and absolutely a favourite for us to take visitors. I am so disappointed that sadly our experience on Friday evening was as it was. We ordered specials, and the first disappointment was one of our party’s dishes came out without a key component we asked why it was missing, a server went off to investigate they came back when we had nearly finished starters and were told it had been left off as the eggs had gone bad no apology, no preemptive conversation. We waited two hours for mains no communication, burning smell filling the dining room. We watched as table after table complained. No communication, no apology. The manager didn’t approach a single table, waitresses were sent to calm people down. I eventually spoke to our waitress and she said the kitchen were overwhelmed. We ate extremely late, no offer of explanation, no offer to discount or even remove the gratuity. I had family visiting from New Zealand and was actually embarrassed. I appreciate everyone had bad nights, but communication and response was absolutely disappointing. I don’t know that I would risk taking visitors again and spending the expense for that experience."

"Beautiful old pub with so much character and superb food, excellent service and real charm, a singer at the electric organ was a real treat. I visited today for a late lunch and had the most flavoursome roast beef, it was wonderful. Dog friendly and really lovely staff who deserve praise for bespoke service skills. First time in Saffron Walden and so impressed I will be back."
