"The Olive Branch has become a favourite and we returned for my birthday lunch and a visit to the Yew Tree Avenue. We ate outside in the sunshine in one of their uniquely decorated gazebos, although the pub is lovely and full of character. Before...I go any further, I write this review because I know that they take on board our comments and strive to get better and better. There was a big lunch party in the barn, so parking was tight and we were worried about noise. We needn’t have worried as the hubbub subsided once their food was served. We ate from their “Lunch for Less” menu. Heritage tomato gazpacho with smoked creme fraiche and wild garlic and I had the pub made black pudding with apple, curried pickled onion, egg yolk and crispy pork. Both delicious although I’d have liked more of the pickle and the crispy pork. Decent size portions none the less. We both had the pan fried sea bass with cockles and prawn pearl barley in a shellfish bisque with sea vegetables, lemon and fennel. We were given a spoon for the “soup” but it was all absorbed by the pearl barley. We were expecting it in a little cup on the side... so why the spoon? Unfortunately, the sea bass was only one fillet cut between us. Not good enough when mains are over £18. Maybe they were running low, because of the big lunch in the barn? Having said that, the skin was deliciously crisp and melt in the mouth and the flavours were superb. We don’t tend to go for meals that are all protein and carbs, so it would have made our day if the sea vegetables and fennel had been much more evident or we’d been asked if we’d like other a salad on the side. As for asking, no one came back to ask if everything was alright... I had asked for the beer list to order another with the main, but we had finished it before anyone came back... may be because of the big lunch in the barn??? Next time we’ll book a different day if there’s a big lunch in the barn! The deserts were every bit as good as you’d expect. Banana pannacotta, dark chocolate mousse, hazelnut ice and Sticky toffee pudding, miso butterscotch and Guinness ice cream. I’d have been happy with just the Guinness ice cream! The birthday celebration was marked with petit fours for both of us, on a platter iced with Happy Birthday. A nice touch, thank you. A small deduction was made by us for the standard of service, which we explained, and were thanked. Hopefully on our next visit, these inconsistencies will be rectified. The Olive Branch can excel... and they do listen."

"We have wanted to eat here for quite some time now after it being recommended by so many people but struggled as always fully booked! (Not a bad thing) so we were delighted when we managed to get a cancellation booking. We arrived 15 minutes early to be greeted by a lovely lady behind the bar letting us know our table will be ready shortly and that we could get some drinks and sit in the bar area. Sure enough the table was ready for 8pm. All staff were friendly and attentive. We ordered oysters to start, my husband had the potted shrimp for staters and the pork belly for main, I had the goats cheese salad and the sea bream for main. All beautifully presented and served within good times. It was just simply delicious! My husband didn't have dessert, however I did- and this was probably the most delicious dessert I've had in a very long time- I highly recommend the brown butter ice-cream with affogato! We will definitely be back and will be recommending friends and family. Thank you!"

"The Jackson Stops has been a reliable favourite of ours for quite a long time; we hadn't been able to visit for a while, so it was lovely to return. As a family group of 7 we had a very relaxed and enjoyable Easter Sunday lunch there. The service as always was friendly, informal and attentive but never intrusive. There was a special Easter Sunday menu with a good choice for starter, main and dessert; we also like that they have a varied vegetarian and vegan menu too. Our food arrived in good time and was very attractively presented, together with bowls of seasonal vegetables. Everyone in our intergenerational group was happy with their choices and really enjoyed their lunch we had dishes from across both menus and across all courses credit to the chef and the kitchen team! We appreciated that we were not rushed and were able to spend time together chatting after we had finished our meal."

"Dining at The Sun Inn on a Wednesday evening was an overall excellent experience. The pub itself was clean and well decorated. There were plants, and a unique bookcase wallpaper where we were sat which added to the atmosphere, and i loved this. We were served by a lovely lady with amazing service, and we were well looked after. Immediately after sitting down we were greeted by our server, and what we'd like to drink, and given menus. Pint was a 10/10 as usual. STARTER: BAKED CAMEMBERT. The food itself was great. We shared a baked camembert for a starter. The cheese itself was standard in flavour and came in a little black pot (very handy to prevent it spilling everywhere). We were given small toasted ciabatta pieces. They were very crunchy/crispy, but was plenty to share between us. I think soft bread would've been a more filling option, and the ciabatta was something we've never had with camembert before, but complimented it. For a dip, I'm usually not a fan of cranberry sauce, but this combination was incredible. A slight sour twang in a sweet sauce accompanied the cheese well. Overall rated 8/10 for this, just would've been nice to have more dipping bits... like peppers! MAINS: PIE AND BEEF DISH. After waiting about 5/10 minutes (great rest period from starter to main), we got our main dishes. I ordered pie of the day, of which was some sort of leek and ham pie with a rich creamy white sauce. This came with mash or chips, of which i chose the latter. They were very crunchy but soft and fluffy in the middle (perfect type of chip if you ask me). It also came with a mixed veg dish which includes approx. 2 broccoli, 2 cauliflower, a few sliced carrots, and about 5 Brussel sprouts. It was all cooked to perfection. I don't think it was needed with the pie though as the portion size was great. However, it made a nice sharing side. My only fault when this came out is the lack of gravy. It was a standard sort of gravy (bit like a bisto best), but i still wanted more to really soak everything in it. The pastry was chewy (my favourite kind), and was slightly flaky on the top, without being crumbly. I think this is the ideal pastry for a pie. I can't say it was my favourite pie ever, but was definitely a great contender against a pukka pie. Overall 9/10 on the chips, and a 6/10 all together. I would definitely recommend, despite being a lower rating. My friend had a beef dish (was a bit like a slow cooked piece), and was covered in a rich gravy sauce. The meat fell apart in your mouth, and was full of flavour. I believe it came with parsnips and carrots. Overall 7/10 for this dish. I would recommend. To conclude my review, I think the Sun Inn in Cottesmore was a good experience. I'd definitely recommend people eating here, if not for the food, but for the service. I'd give it all a 8 rating out of 10. I'm writing this as someone who is starting out reviewing food for fun, hoping it helps!"
