"My brother and his wife visited me from Co Durham and we called at this pub for lunch. The menu was limited but we all found something we could enjoy. I ordered Beer Battered Fish with the trimmings costing £11.95. When the fish arrived it looked a bit overcooked but as I ate it I realised that it was fish which I could have bought very cheaply from Iceland, and definitely not Beer Battered. My sister in law ordered Steak and Kidney Pie, this arrived rather obscured by the pile of garden peas, but as she moved the peas she discovered the smallest collapsed pie which had very little meat and was mainly gravy. The cost of this was about the same as the above described fish. My brother ordered the Beef burger. When this arrived it looked quite spectacular. The presentation was very good. Unfortunately the burger, according to my brother, tasted like a burger you would buy at a fairground or at a burger van at a car boot sale. Again this cost £11.95. When the waitress came to ask if all was ok we told her we were disappointed and she said thank you. No one came to see what the problem was. We did eat the food as we were all hungry but the only good thing about the meal were the peas. The chips were cold. The pub is in a lovely position, the décor s very nice, the bar staff were friendly and helpful. The food completely lets it down. How can they describe the fish that I had as Beer Battered ??? How can they charge top dollar for very low quality food?? One star for decor and friendly staff."

Just been for a Sunday lunch and it was delicious. Great homemade Yorkshire puddings with all the trimmings will definitely be back.

Called at The Hopwood Arms as soon as we heard that food was being served once again. Very tasty cheese and onion pie and a cracking pint of Sanfransimcoe pale ale. Lovely service all round, cannot fault it. Voir le carte

As always. Great food, my children are always catered for. Staff are well mannered and helpful. Lasagne and salt and pepper menu are lovely! Waitress always helps and makes sure you’re happy with food. Would recommend to try the new management who have clearly made great changes.

We come here instead of the airport pub today and I am so glad we chose here not only are the children's facilities better but the staff are not only more attentive but they give a more family feel to the whole premises. As a licensee myself I could only hope I can get somewhere and some staff as appealing as here. Definitely my new local

I really wish I hadn 't visited this pub for lunch. What a mistake. I hadn 't been there for 40 years, and won 't be going back. Fair 's fair, the two gammons ordered were ok, if you ignored the chips and peas. The homemade pie was atrocious. The whole meal had to be left uneaten. £45 for 3 meals, 2 cokes and a cup of tea, which was lovely...the best part of the meal. Voir le carte

There were 6 of us, 5 adults and a baby. We ordered our food and waited. We waited for 45 minutes. The food was average. Two orders of fish and chips, very small fish- £12.50 per person) One chicken burger , the 'crispy ' coating very hard, again a very small piece of chicken. £11.50) Cheese onion pie, chips, peas- £12.50, 'pie was mushy ' Jacket potato with beans £6.50) was 'okay ' The lasagne with garlic bread was ' nice ' All things considered we would not eat here again. There was no one else in the place so not sure why service took so long. No one came to ask how our food was and were we satisfied.

Usually a fantastic pub, and have been going for years with family. Under the old management it was the heart of the community with everyone feeling comfortable in any situation. Knowing this, we expected the same community pub even under the new management. A couple of weeks ago I began going with friends (we’re 17 a few weeks away from 18) playing pool and buying soft drinks. The last time we visited I bought myself a drink and another one of my friends. My other two friends didn’t want a drink at this specific time but were intending to buy one later on. It was before I paid for the two drinks that we were then made to feel unwelcome with the sentence “it isn’t a youth club” by the lady b...

"Dissapointed sorry. I feel that the restaurant is not as good as it used to be. The whole experience is somehow lacking now compared to what it used to be like. Todays meals were a starter of ribs and also prawn cocktails. They were nice and we had great expectations for the mains. Steak had to be sent back as we ordered medium rare but it was more medium well, the replacement was better cooked but found it to be to fatty, my missus did not finish it. Found the house special burger to be too dry, that’s both the burger and the bun it was served on, as well as lacking in seasoning, nope I never finished it. The main ribs for our friend was only half eaten too due to it being too fatty. In the past the Toby had been the place to go. You do seem to have lost your way unfortunately. The staff were attentive though and Carried out their jobs very well. The plates and left over food were cleared away and we were asked did we enjoy our food! We politely told them it was ok and not like it used to be, we were asked if we wanted deserts to which we said no, then within a couple of minutes the bill was placed on our table (we hadn’t asked for the bill though) but a lovely gesture from the front of house who came over and spoke to us and told us he’d given us a reduction on our meal as he had noticed that the ribs were fatty too. As the bill did arrive with out us asking for it then the royal Toby had lost Out on us ordering more drinks. So we decided to just go. Hopefully the next time we visit we will see an improvement and that Todays visit was just a minor glitch"

"Visited yesterday at 4pm and can confidently say we will never return. Ordered 4 soft drinks which took over 20 minutes to arrive and when they did arrived incorrect with additional drinks we didn't order. When ordering our food, several things we wanted off the menus including the childrens menu) were not available however nobody had said this to us prior and the waitress looked this this was clearly news to her when I informed her someone should have said this when we say down. 2 of our group ordered starters- £8 for 4 pathetic peices of calamari which didnt even have a piece of lemon or a bit of garnish on the side for presentation purposes- absolute rip off! Ordered 3 sunday lunches which took over hour to arrive and when they did eventually arrive were cold and missing the veg. When I questioned where the veg was on the plate, the waitress returned with some limp, wet and pathetic looking cabbage on a puddle and said there were no carrotts left. No apology no nothing. Told her is really wasnt acceptable and again was looked at like I was just being difficult. 5 minutes later another waitress appear with some equally pathetic looking carrots so they did have some clearly. Husbands chicken burger looked equally poor and pretty dry and burnt. The weather also took a turn whilst we were waiting for our food which had resulted in groups of drenched and very drunk people coming in from the beer garden who were being loud and brash cheering and just generally being drunken. The so called manager said and did nothing to quieten them down even though you could clearly feel a change of atmosphere inside from a family venue to what felt like being in the weatherspoon at 11pm on a Saturday night. As a result of the drunk groups, people were getting up and moving trying to get a table away from the noise and rowdiness. 2 pensioners who had moved eventually gave up and left without ordering informing the manager that it was because of the noise...again he did and said nothing. We couldn't bare being in the place for another minute so asked for the bill instead of desert. This arrived included drinks we didn't have on it which we had to get removed. Overall the service was terrible, food was shocking and atmophere awful. I never write reviews but didnt feel I could leave this one without one. This place needs to decide it its a bar or a restraunt, the manager needs to take charge, co-ordinate his staff and get a backbone to deal with drunken customers and the waitresses need some real training in expectations of good service."
