"Well I had organised afternoon tea for a friend’s birthday, I rang the hotel to arrange a few things which never happened) . The first being we wanted a table not a sofa and coffee table, so they found us a table even though I had previously asked for this. We then had to change as it was so old and wobbly we couldn’t of sat there eating. I had ordered a bottle of fizz, no note of this. The untrained creepy young waiter eventually got it and plonked it down without even opening it. Then the cake I had ordered came out before our afternoon tea. Then they came out with vegetarian sandwich options- we didn’t order this. No semi or skimmed milk, only full fat as someone forget to order it!! I ordered a mixture of scones- only plain arrived. When we had our tea we were then totally forgotten about and we had to find staff to top up the tea pot etc. All in all awful service and awful afternoon tea, don’t waste your time or money going there- such a shame as could be a fantastic venue. We enjoyed our afternoon as we were together but extremely disappointed with the rest."

Exceedingly well catered far. Good choice of menu (pre booked of course) Everything arrived at the tables, well cooked and hot (except where not meant to be) and tasty.

Fantastic menu with lots of lovely choices and superb food beautifully presented. The staff are attentive and professional and are lovely young people who made our evening so enjoyable,

The restaurant offers delicious food, excellent service, and a pleasant atmosphere. They are very welcoming to dogs and provide friendly service. The nut roast and fish and chips were standout dishes. It's a perfect spot to visit after a hike.

The staff was lovely, but the food quality was just average. My sausages seemed to have been reheated, and there weren't many gluten-free or dairy-free options available. It might be better to dine in the village instead of at this restaurant.

overcooked lobster. Lovely staff lovely restaurant. But food not great.Friend also had a burger that was overpriced and not very tasty. I perhaps should of mentioned it and got them to replace my meal. But I actually did not want to make a fuss.

By advertisement appeared to be 4 star . medium 3 star in effect. Cold building in need of modernisation. Water damage in restaurant Shows poor management. Far too expensive. Would have been more comfortable with Premier Lodge at half the price. Big disappointment

We ate here 2 nights running in October, one meal in the dining room and one in the bar (same menu) On both evenings the food was excellent. Beautifully presented and great service. We would have no hesitation in returning. Lovely relaxing evenings with delicious food.

The initial impression was good BUT it went down from there.Reception was empty, took 3 tries to find a suitable table(bar, breakfast room and then the dining room-clue in the name there for diners! We were the only ones having lunch, which was average(they should take lessons from The George in Rye) Ice was put in oj although I ordered it without. Bill was nearly £50. I am unable to comprehend how this place is rated 4 star!

Our group of six was seated in a separate room and seemed to be forgotten. It took over an hour for our meal to be served. The sausages and onion mash we ordered were burnt and lacked onion flavor, accompanied by a limp serving of spinach. The pear and ginger pudding we also ordered was missing from our table and when it arrived, it was served in a enamel dish with a crumble that was hard and lukewarm. We were very disappointed with the experience and received no apology even after emailing the restaurant.

"Honestly...one of the best pub restaurants I have ever visited! We chose to eat here as it was recommended via Alistair Sawday, and it did not disappoint. The food, atmosphere, hygiene and service were all 5* when we visited last night. We sat inside, by candlelight, and ordered 2 starters (the Rye smoked mackerel with buttercream sauce and the heritage tomato salad and 2 mains (the beef burger with fries and the hake with toasted ciabatta and garden peas . It was truly exquisite! We both cleaned our plates (and we don't usually do that! . My only mild criticism is that I didn't realise the hake dish would include bacon lardons they certainly added to the flavour, but as an ethical pescatarian, this could have ruined the meal for me (I didn't allow it to, but 10 years ago when I was more strict it may have upset me . I may have simply missed this ingredient when reading the menu, and I didn't make the waiting staff aware of my dietary preferences, so I accept this was my fault and not theirs. It's just something for other pescatarians reading this review to be aware of. I have absolute confidence that they would prepare the hake dish without the bacon lardons if you asked. As for me....my boyfriend gleefully took them from my plate and demolished them himself! We also enjoyed a medium glass of wine each my boyfriend (who is very particular loved the tempranillo and I had their Italian pinot grigio. Our entire meal would have been less than £60, but with the current government incentive scheme to eat in, it came to less than £40!! We tipped generously as they truly deserved it. We will 100% be returning and can't advocate them enough."
