"We were seated promptly and our order taken and drinks served, the food took just over 45 minutes and no offer of an explanation for the delay. The menus were too many and in lots of forms, just simplify a little, no wonder you needed a clip board to hold them all. When the meals did arrive the roast dinner was not good the beef was dry and really tough, as old boots comes to mind, the roast potatoes were very hard and very difficult to cut, looked as if they had been in the roasting tin for at least 2 days and reheated. There was a teaspoonful of cabbage and 1 tiny floret of broccoli. this offering was on the specials menu and the only reason it was special is that it must have been yesterdays leftovers. With the other meal was a small jug of gravy, which when poured was very lumpy. We do like horse radish sauce but unfortunately there should have been some on the table and there wasn't. We asked for some and we were half way through the meal before it arrived. The real value of an enduring business lies in the ability to provide good service. On this occasion you missed it by a mile. There seemed to be a significant difference between the fast food outdoor service and the indoor table service and people around us seemed to think the same. The cost of the roast beef dinner was very expensive compared to other local offerings and together with the poor quality an altogether poor experience."

Only a stones throw from Alton Towers but couldn't be further from the hustle and bustle. Lovely tranquil garden area, brilliant for eating out on a sunny day. Food great. What's not to like.

We were visiting family in Alton and called in for lunch before our walk. The food was delicious and the service just perfect- thank you, we all really enjoyed it. Oh and the walk was lovely too

After a nice walk around Dimmingsdale with friends we had lunch in The Rambers Retreat. We all had toasted sandwiches, drinks and cake including their amazing lemon meringues pie. Great food and excellent service.

Road warning. The roads to the retreat are very very tight, with very few passing places, walkers and cyclists everywhere, not for the faint hearted driver. Didn’t get in to the area as was packed, cars spread out so no parking available.

We visited for Sunday lunch and sat in The Hidewaway, an outside heated Summer house. The staff are friendly, super polite and attentive. We enjoyed a selection of dishes from their Sunday Lunch menu and had delicious desserts. Nothing was too much trouble. The setting is delightful and you can then do a variety of walks to burn off the calories consumed.

As the weather was fantastic this weekend, we decided to have a Sunday lunch at the Ramblers Retreat. Not often you can eat a Sunday dinner sat outside in the U.K this is a beautiful, relaxing place to eat outside. You hear the songbirds running water in the background (unless you sit near to the water feature . The dinner served is tasty the portion size is enough to satisfy your hunger. Another thing that makes this place so good is the friendly, helpful staff. Enjoy :

We arrived on time and were promptly seated, but unfortunately, it was downhill from there. It's always a worrying sign when one meal arrives five minutes before another, it's not etiquette to sit eating a meal while someone else is awaiting their soggy microwaved pie....not only was the pastry like a custard the chicken was dried up and stringy. The waitress was apologetic and offered a five pounds reduction, but our lunch out in the country had already been spoiled, We left to find a cafe in Cheadle for dessert. Tip for the chef..PIes and microwaves don't mix.

"Our room faced the front of the hotel, and while the village was quiet with only two pubs and a small corner store, it seemed to be a shortcut for heavy vehicles speeding downhill at night, with headlights constantly illuminating our room. We also found out that the hotel closes in the evening if it's not busy, and the front door may be locked as early as 10 PM, requiring a code for re-entry. The internet service was poor; even standing just outside the front door, I had no reception and couldn't call the emergency numbers posted there. It appears that the quality of the rooms varies significantly, with some having been upgraded while others are less desirable, including our own. When we questioned our bill because we didn't think the room was worth £140, we were told that since we had booked through Charming Escapes, we should take it up with them, as the hotel receives only a fraction of what we paid. This made us feel like second-class guests, especially since it seemed we were stuck in a low-quality room. The standard rate for a double room is £90, and if I were to rate our experience like on the TV show "Four in a Bed," I would say £50 a night would have been generous. Previous reviews also mentioned an issue with the door handle and the ability to lock the room, which had not been fixed. If you’re just looking for a place to dry off your hiking boots, this hotel might suffice, but I wouldn't recommend staying here again. It has a lot of potential, and thankfully, we had a wonderful evening at The Devonshire Arms just across the street—it felt like a whole different experience. It seems the staff at Charles Cotton have simply given up."
