"High expectations but left very disappointed...the length of time we waited just for our starter was extremely long! We were told by the waitress that the excessive wait was because everyone came in at once but most of the tables had been reserved so they must of known how many people were expected? Starter was ok but when the main meal came out it was not hot and not enjoyable, we had to complain as many other diners at the same we’re also complaining about the wait, we ask to see the Manager to which the waitress had to take the flack, not very professional at all....”Hall and Woodhouse would turn in their graves” Not a very good experience at all...shame !!"

The restaurant accommodated us when we called last minute, the service from the waitress was fantastic, and the food was excellent.

Very busy restaurant with unusual but interesting decor. However on this occasion orders were wrong and we were served a pot of hot water instead of tea. Not the best service although it was friendly.

We enjoy the dining room,as part of being with other people..we prefer not to be disturbed by small children running and screaming!! But love the menue, the beef needs to be very well done for one of us.puddings seem a bit all for the price.but very tasty. Voir le carte

waiter/ress service was fine. we both requested soup for starters but only one soup left at 8:10 pm so one of us went without. Main meals came out after and the pie meal was fine but the burger and chips meal was cold so had to be returned for a fresh one.

The spacious room with its decorations was ideal for enjoying a meal with friends while still being able to hear each other. The high ceiling enhanced the feeling of openness. We often dine out with this group of friends, and we all had nothing but positive things to say about the restaurant.

The nut roast was a bit dry and it seemed like the vegetables were pre-cooked for all the roasts and just left sitting in the kitchen. However, the relaxed ambiance and charming decor created a nice setting to meet up with friends. The staff were courteous and efficient, so we would suggest this place to others, although maybe just for drinks. Voir le carte

The starter was average. The service was very slow and although we had 3 waitresses we still waited for drinks a long time. The main course was really poor. I ordered the Hake and to be honest I do not think I had 50grams of fish on my plate. Needless to say I was still hungry. The desert was also average. I enjoyed the glass of wine and the place had a nice atmosphere.

We thought we would try it for Valentines Day. They have spent money on the refurbishment which has been done well and it had nice touches but we were very disappointed with the meal. Our starters were lukewarm and our steak was gristly. We were only asked if everything was ok when we were paying and the response we got for our disappointment was. Sorry about that. We paid £60 for the meal and 3 drinks which we didn’t think was value for money. We won’t be returning.

"I came away from my recent visit to this lovely restaurant with some concern. For good reason, this has been a favourite venue for many years and locals are watching closely to see what a recent change of ownership will mean. Until my most recent meal here, I'd been encouraged that much remained the same, including excellent professional waiting staff. However, despite a price hike, the set-price lunch menu now offers a more limited choice, with two out of eight items being vegetarian/vegan and another two with cost supplements meaning they don't really belong on the table d'hote menu. My starter was the most disappointing start to a meal ever offered here; it was essentially a beige crab pate in a wine glass with just two tiny biscuits to accompany. My main course of roast turkey was as expected and I was happy to find that the Lord Bute continues to include traditional vegetables. However, this rather modest meal cost me £30-. With a better starter, appreciating my surroundings and excellent service, that would have been fine. But I did feel very slightly cheated. I understand the new owner will be aiming to achieve star rating at this venue and do hope that s/he has made the right calculations. The local residents have been very loyal to this restaurant. If a new focus alienates this custom-base, are there enough others who would visit the new version often enough for it to survive?"
