"Three of us had pre ordered the traditional afternoon tea. One of us had arrived early but had to wait quite a while for someone to greet her and show her to the table. Once we were seated, it took a while for the waiting staff to come and find out what we wanted to drink. To be fair, once we had placed our orders, the drinks came quickly. We had to wait nearly half an hour for our pre ordered afternoon teas, even though the restaurant was far from busy. We were trying to catch the attention of the waiting staff but we joked that it felt like they had been trained not to catch our eye! Eventually, one came and said the teas would be out shortly, which they were. The croque monsieur and croque champignon were absolutely delicious and made a great change from traditional sandwiches. The scones were lovely and came with clotted cream and strawberry jam. The cakes, though, were a real disappointment: there was one lemon sponge cake with pieces of something in it but then two identical chocolate sponges. There was a real lack of variety as all were sponge cakes and two were exactly the same. I don't know whether they had run out of what should have been the third cake but no explanation was given. We would have expected perhaps a pastry or a gateau something to give a bit of variety. The afternoon tea should come with bottomless hot drinks. Again, though, no one came to wait on us and see if we needed refills and it took ten minutes of solidly trying to catch the eye of a member of waiting staff any waiting staff! to ask for our refills. Again, once we had requested them, they did come quickly. When the waiting staff were actually waiting on us, they were friendly and pleasant but were just not attentive enough to their customers, despite the restaurant not being busy. Would we come again and would we have this again? I'm unsure: we've had difficulties with waiting staff not being alert enough to the needs of their customers on a previous visit. The savoury aspects of the meal were really good but the sweet aspect was such a disappointment. I think I would only have it again if there were limited other options, staff were attentive to people waiting and I checked first what the cake options were."

"Quite possibly the worst pub meal I have ever experienced. Six of us arrived at 1 pm to an almost empty pub and ordered lunch. It took over three quarters of an hour to arrive despite very few other dinners. What did arrive was an abomination! Two of our group had fish and chips, the consensual opinion was that it had been cooked yesterday and then reheated. Dry and tasteless. The burgers were so over cooked it took a pint of beer to wash them down. The garnish in one burger included a thick slice of onion with its root still firmly in place. If a chef can 't even be bothered to slice his vegetables I would suggest he should stay at home. The staff were completely disinterested in being at work and even less interested in their customers. They gave no explanation of why the food took so long to arrive and didn 't, at any point, ask us how the food was. Had we not waited so long, and therefore been extremely hungry, we would have sent the whole lot back. I now regret not having done so. On asking for the bill there was, the now familiar, lack of interest in our thoughts about what we had just been served. I questioned the person accepting my money as to whether he was going to bother to ask. He responded, blankly, asking how was it ? I described how awful the whole experience had been. Another blank look. No apology, no explanation, no offer of a discount, no nothing. If you are considering going to this pub to eat, don 't. The Shakespear or the Port of Call are close by and consistently do much better food. I will not be returning despite this being my local . Sad, it used to be a very good pub."

"We are not usually the negative review writing type, but having visited the Brunel Raj tonight, I felt strongly that this was one time that I would. Myself, my partner and a couple of our friends, visited this restaurant at 6.30pm tonight. My partner is visually impaired and as such, has an impeccably behaved, assistance guide dog. As we came through the door, one of the staff asked that the dog be kept outside? Even though the dog was wearing the high visibility guide dog harness, I politely informed the staff member that it was an assistance dog, and that it should therefore be accepted onto the premises. The staff member, who claimed to be the manager, then said that he knew guide dogs were permitted into restaurants but as his restaurant was small and busy, he would be refusing us entry, even though we had booked. As we have experienced this situation on a number of occasions previously, we are quite used to restaurant owners being unsure of the Equality Act in the UK. But this situation was different. We have not previously been met with such a lack of common decency, rudeness, or any compassion for the feelings of the person using the assistance dog. The complete absence of any respect or understanding from all of the 4 staff present and during this situation, has now led me to write this review and to follow this up further via other channels, in order to prevent others from experiencing this again in the future. Oh.. And by the way, the restaurant was virtually empty."
