"Yesterday 11th June 2023 myself, daughter, son in law and two grandchildren travelled to Bristol from Bridgwater to see The Lion King at the Bristol Hippodrome. We decided to arrive early so that we could all have lunch before going to see the show. We googled places to eat close to the theatre and The Hatchet came up as the oldest in Bristol and did food. Couldn't be happier with the choice. Not only was it a quirky looking pub from the outside, inside was well designed and comfortable. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the food was delicious. My youngest grandson (10 years old) loves beef so he had the roast beef carvery. He's pretty fussy and very vocal if he thinks the meat is tough or tasteless but he was very pleased with his dinner. He said it was the best place he'd had beef and that it was delicious. I can agree as I had the carvery with roast lamb and a small piece of beef and can honestly say it was one of the best carvery's I have had in a while. My daughter and son in law agreed. Plates were piled high and we were thoroughly full. All plates cleared. The chef was very accommodating and plated up exactly what you asked for. The gravy was soooo good. My other grandson (12 years old) ordered the cheese burger. This looked amazing and was huge. The chips were double cooked and lovely. Nice side salad and loads of cheese (proper cheese). All in all we will return for food here. Pleasant surroundings, good food, great selection of drinks and very friendly staff. Just a note............... The pub is over 18's only most of the week, but on Sundays they have families in. This basically means there is no childrens menu and so meals are all the same size and same price. Good value for money though for a city. £11.99 for carvery and the cheeseburger was £10.99."

Food was ok, but nothing special, standard pub grub. Very noisy, but understandable as prior to a gig at the nearby o2 academy.

The food and beer were decent. Our experience was enhanced by playing pool. I was expecting a different atmosphere in such a historic pub, but there was a heavy metal band practicing upstairs. Maybe I'm just becoming grumpy.

Looks super from the outside, but we weren’t allowed in, because we were a group of 7 people. I thought I’d got in a Time Machine and gone back to the 1990s, when I was 20. They didn’t let us 7 middle aged couples on, in case we really tore the place up

I went away for the weekend with friends and stumbled upon this charming pub during a walking tour. Luckily, they were showing the World Cup final the next day, so we made a reservation. We were pleasantly surprised by the warm and friendly greeting we received, and the carvery was absolutely delicious. Voir le carte

Popped in before going to see Marcus King at the O2 opposite. A warm welcome from friendly staff. Ordered our food which arrived well presented and hot. Obviously the nearest pub to the venue, so it got quite busy, this was handled by the staff without any issues waiting for drinks. Will definitely return.

Came across this historic pub on a walking tour and who wouldn’t want to have a pint where Blackbeard himself used to drink. It’s a no nonsense pub, pool tables upstairs, tv’s for sporting events but there was no buzz about it, no atmosphere. The food was poor, staff unenthusiastic. View the pub from the outside and walk on.

Sunday carvery. Had low expectations as carvery’s are generally not great but the food we had was inedible. £9.99 the meat was dry and tasteless the roast potatoes were not real spuds. Veggies were ok. Plenty of people did seem to finish their plates so I may be in the minority but for a few extra quid there is so many more decent roasts in Bristol Voir le carte

Impressed by the charming old facade and interior of this historic pub, we decided to stop in for a drink after watching the Lion King nearby. The drinks (Inch's cider and ale) were reasonably priced and the service was prompt, typical for Bristol. However, our experience was marred by the rowdiness of a group of overly intoxicated hen party and loud men in the bar. We managed to find a somewhat quiet table by the window near two students, but I wouldn't have felt comfortable eating here as originally planned. As we were leaving, a bouncer at the door confirmed our notion that this pub is not ideal for those seeking a peaceful post-show drink, despite its close proximity to The Hippodrome.

Interesting to read the last review because on the same day, My friend and I (both early 40's) were refused entry with my dog. She is a small terrier and has been in the pub several times before without issue. We were told that we couldn't come in because the pub was too full and it was not safe to have a dog in the pub. I said that we planned to sit in the garden and were told that this too was full and populated by rowdy stag do's. On looking round the pub, the area by the bar was busy as a large group came in before us, but the area by the second downstairs bar was only half full, the garden was half full and everyone was sitting down quietly chatting. No idea what their problem was. The...

"Visited here in Sept 23 for an executive dinner that we were hosting for various senior business leaders. We booked out the whole venue, which was the perfect size and atmosphere for the intimate and exclusive feel that we wanted, plus a convenient location. The TV that shows into the kitchen was fascinating, and the record player was put to use towards the end of the evening! Caroline from the venue helped us organise the event in advance and was great to deal with. We were fortunate with the weather so were able to enjoy a welcome drinks reception out the front of the venue, and have the door open all evening to let the balmy night in. We had the 7 course taster menu and it was simply OUTSTANDING so many of our guests commented on how delicious it was, particularly the beef steak course! It was so tasty that I even enjoyed the fish dish (not usual for me! . Service on the night was exemplary, the courses were brought out at just the right intervals so you weren't waiting ages but also not being rushed. The chef came out to greet us after the final course, which was a lovely touch and meant we could thank him. Overall, we had really great feedback from our guests, everyone loved it thank you for making our event such a success! We would definitely book again, and I know a few of our guests have already recommended it to their own companies for executive dinners! Would not hesitate to recommend."
