"Firstly, the fantastic waitress and waiter made us very welcome. They are both a real asset to the restaurant, making customers feel at home and relaxed. The food was absolutely delicious. We loved the extra courses/surprises between the main courses. The timing of serving each was perfect. We usually spend months each year in France and eat wonderful meals. The chef here had mastered some great tastes and combined unusual ingredients. We didn't expect to get these tastes in England. We have only minor issues hence not a star review. Although it was the end of May, it was very, very cold in the restaurant. Perhaps something the owners need to think about. Secondly, the male owner spoke to every table in the restaurant except us! I tried on several occasions, to make eye contact but he studiously ignored me. I only wanted to compliment him on the amazing food. We thought it was maybe because we weren't locals, but then he spoke to the table behind me who were also on holiday in the area. Just left us feeling a little inferior. However, we will be returning soon for the wonderful food and the grrat waitress and waiter."

Pub back open!! The pub is the heart of the village. Friendly welcome. Good beer. Amazing location. Proper pub and not a restaurant.

It's back! At last. The George returns to reality with a friendly pub atmosphere. I sat there unstressed and had a very nice soup and crusty roll in relaxed surroundings.

It was a windswept wet day when we visited. There was only a handful of people in and the kitchen extract system was being serviced. However the barman went above and beyond to provide us with a tasty warm meal (we had pie, chips and peas) before we went on our way.

THE GEORGE IS BACK!! Had a lovely pint next to the fire in a beautiful rustic atmosphere and not a 9 course tasting menu in sight. I'm so happy for the village to have got it's pub back, and what a wonderful pub it is too. Long live The George. Unpretentious. Dogs welcome and good beer. Cheers!

We have had a wonderful four-night stay at a cottage in Alstonefield village. The owners of the cottage recommended The George and we weren’t disappointed. We went for the three-course menu which included a few extra, small taster courses too. Every course and also the wine was mouth-wateringly delicious. We discussed when we’ll be back at this was our stand out meal of the year. It’s so good to be dining again! This is more of a ‘foodie’ hangout than a traditional, pub grub gastropub. The chef here clearly knows what he or she are doing.

The George is OPEN as a pub. The George has historically been at the heart of the village, welcoming walkers, holiday makers, visitors and locals alike. Over the last couple of years the George was converted to a high end restaurant which did not welcome drinkers and pub food eaters of any description. It is a sad tale but the restaurant is no more. On Friday last, the George opened as a pub and the village and supporters of the old George made their mark. The pub was heaving from 5:30 to close of play, thank you Nick. Hopefully the Village and friends can keep the well loved community hub and we can enjoy a warm friendly atmosphere for many years to come.

"Our room faced the front of the hotel, and while the village was quiet with only two pubs and a small corner store, it seemed to be a shortcut for heavy vehicles speeding downhill at night, with headlights constantly illuminating our room. We also found out that the hotel closes in the evening if it's not busy, and the front door may be locked as early as 10 PM, requiring a code for re-entry. The internet service was poor; even standing just outside the front door, I had no reception and couldn't call the emergency numbers posted there. It appears that the quality of the rooms varies significantly, with some having been upgraded while others are less desirable, including our own. When we questioned our bill because we didn't think the room was worth £140, we were told that since we had booked through Charming Escapes, we should take it up with them, as the hotel receives only a fraction of what we paid. This made us feel like second-class guests, especially since it seemed we were stuck in a low-quality room. The standard rate for a double room is £90, and if I were to rate our experience like on the TV show "Four in a Bed," I would say £50 a night would have been generous. Previous reviews also mentioned an issue with the door handle and the ability to lock the room, which had not been fixed. If you’re just looking for a place to dry off your hiking boots, this hotel might suffice, but I wouldn't recommend staying here again. It has a lot of potential, and thankfully, we had a wonderful evening at The Devonshire Arms just across the street—it felt like a whole different experience. It seems the staff at Charles Cotton have simply given up."
