"Hoch droben, with the best view over Meißen lies the old venerable Albrechtsburg. The Albrechtsburg zu Meißen is the oldest castle in Germany, the ensemble on the Burgberg also includes the Bischofsschloss, the Kornhaus, further residential buildings and today’s Romantik Hotel and Restaurant “Burgkeller”. Already in 929 King Henry I built a wooden fortification on a rock above the Elbe. Thus, Meißen became the centre of the border mark of the same name compared to the Slavic regions of the East. Many years later, on behalf of the brothers Ernst and Albrecht von Wettin, who jointly ruled in Saxony, a late Gothic castle building was created between 1471 and 1524: The Albrechtsburg Meissen. The new residence should be a representative administrative centre and at the same time a residential castle. This made it less a defence system than a castle – the first of the German construction history. Arnold von Westfalen received the order for a generous new building. Due to the steep Elbhang, the basement had to be guided over two floors, followed by the ground floor and three upper floors. Especially the refined light guide through curtain windows and the cell vaults used throughout the castle were an architectural novelty. A masterpiece of stair construction is the Great Wendelstein, a staircase of curved steps that wind around a filigree spindle. Innovative in the construction of the castle were also the walls growing upwards and some technical installations, such as the chimney hoists partly guided in the walls. However, the Albrechtsburg Meißen should never be used in their planned function, because during the construction the brothers shared the wettinian territory. At times there were receptions or hunting companies, but mostly the castle was empty. Only August the Starke used Albrechtsburg in 1710 as Europe's first porcelain factory. Porcelain was produced at Albrechtsburg in 153 years until the production site disappeared from the Gothic rooms in 1863. End of 19th The Albrechtsburg was also made accessible to the population and still enjoys many visitors from home and abroad. The castle is now one of the state castles and gardens in Saxony and houses a publicly accessible museum. Albrechtsburg zu Meißen with a view of the Dom Im Burggrafenhaus, a Kurfürliche Schösserei (Financial Administration of the Meißen Office) was established. From 1840, the former Burggrafenhaus was used by the Porcelain Manufaktur and was the last apartment of the Domprediger. At the end of 1879, the Schösserei was demolished as part of the redesign of the entire castle complex and the castle square in order to build a restaurant. And so opened on 9. August 1881 the Royal Saxon castle cellar. After the war years, the dance was reloaded in 1948. Closures and reopenings changed. Lastly, after the reunification of both German states in 1990, the Burgkeller was privatized in 1998 and reopened in April 2000 as a restaurant and hotel. Today the Burgkeller is a trendy restaurant in Meissen with a fantastic view of the Elbe, the surrounding vineyards and the old town of Meissen. So, now enough with my historical statements here. Sources: Wikipedia, the HP des Burgkellers, the Albrechtsburg, the Schlossland Sachsen and the Museumsbund Sachsen Every year, we are moving to the Burgkeller at least twice. Once the annual wine festival in Meissen, and at least once a year to the chocolate buffet in the Burgkeller. This chocolate buffet is offered in the early spring and late autumn, then the burg cellar belongs only to the sweet treats. We had decided with our friends the appointment in late autumn, and so we were on a sunny autumn day at the castle. Cake over cake Where else good-bourgeois, Saxon cuisine is served, this time a long table with various sweet delicacies was built. For unbelievable 11 euros per person you can sleep all day. The selection includes not only a variety of chocolate varieties, but from normal cakes such as poppy cakes, poppy pies, quark cakes or the famous Saxon egg corner to cakes and a variety of chocolates all the tastes of the delicious. Torten... The highlight is, of course, the huge chocolate fountain where various fruits can be decorated with chocolate. Chocolate fountains of children's favorite Only drinks such as coffee and cocoa must be paid extra. The whole friendly team from Burgkeller always fills up the buffet and takes care of the drinks. In the end, you don't even get all the cakes and cakes, so every time we decide that two people always share a piece of cake, you can then eat several cakes and cakes. Pralines for every taste chocolate over chocolate Tonight we left completely over sugared and more than satisfies the restaurant. And whether you believe it or not, at home there was a little bit of hearty, because the whole day is only sweet to live then something too much of the good. Our conclusion: we paid € 118.90 for five people for an incredible summer experience. For cakes and cake lovers an absolute must. But the castle cellar is also recommended. Not only because of the important history you have the fantastic one here on the Burgberg, but also because of a great team and delicious food."

Stumbled across this place after spending a chilly afternoon in the cathedral and castle, and had a very nice late lunch. Charming little restaurant. We just had brats, but they were very good. Nice service, inexpensive. If you're walking further beyond the cathedral, this is a great spot for a bite.

This restaurant has a superb situation in an impressive building beside the castle, overlooking the town. A taxi is recommended, as the climb from the lower Old Town is only partly reduced by a public lift! The restaurant was busy on a Friday evening and we were glad we had booked ahead. Service was friendly and efficient and the trout and sauerbraten (pot roast beef) were beautifully cooked and presented. A sorbet, local cheese and a Meissen wine completed a most enjoyable meal.

Visit: 22/08/19 2030 hours On holiday and visits with my husband, son, our German friend. We went in, was ignored for 5 minutes left standing at the entrance outside on the terrace We approached the bar and was offered...1 of 2 tables, but the guy behind the bar, only "signed" on the tables not asked a colleague to show us on the table. The table and then we were ignored for another 10 minutes. A type of the oldest of the 2 single waiters we saw) then threw 4 menus on the table, no hello or good evening frightened, We then came up and left The blonde lady at the reception never asked us on the way out if we are okay and what the problem was Absolute shame Nevertheless we went next to a resta...
