"After a busy Christmas, cooking for elderly parents and family, my husband thought it would be nice to treat me to meal out. We had been to the grill room in the Royal Oak previously and had a very nice experience. We have recently moved...to the area and my husband Made a reservation for the two of us. I always like to start on the positives. This place is clearly taking Covid compliance seriously are the restaurants at screens segregating all the tables. The decor of the place and the Christmas decorations were simply divine. However, let’s get onto the food. My husband‘s meal was absolutely fine. To say that mine was a lacklustre was an understatement. The starter was meant to come with an Asian salad, slices of cucumber and raw tomato with a little bit of red onion is not an Asian salad! I had ordered a rump steak to be cooked medium with a side order of garlic butter and a side order of onion rings. When the meals were brought out, My steak, when I tried it was rare! Very rare. The sidedish that was supposed to come with it was a corn dish. Instead, it came with a mini corn on the cob. The waitress was really really nice, and took my food back. They offered to keep my husbands food warm whilst they further cooked my steak. We know from past experience that if a medium cooked duck breast is kept warm, it’s not very good! He continued to eat his dinner whilst My steak was correctly cooked. The onion rings which I had ordered as a side dish were left on the table, I thought it prudent to eat them while they were still warm. Sadly none of the oil has been drained from these correctly. There was so much oil in them and were not nice. My steak was placed back onto the grill And brought back out. Sadly, not all of the steak was brought out. Secondly no corn. The garlic butter was now inedible, it has completely melted and now resembles soup. The waitress explained that they were very shortstaffed and it had been a busy day. They had clearly run out of some of the food that they should’ve been serving and the substitute was not up to standard. Establishments should make diners aware of this before they take their seat. Had we have been advised of their staffing issues, we would’ve taken our custom elsewhere. The bill was £88. This was after they had taken off £3.50 for one of the side dishes that we had ordered as an extra. To be honest the compensation hardly made up for the lacklustre dining experience. Will not be rushing back to this place. That I’m much better places to eat locally. Such a pity as this place could be something special."

We really don't get the negative reviews on this site as our food was incredible! We had a mixed grill which was absolutely cooked to perfection, and the salmon was beautiful. We thought the service and food was definitely worthy of a good review. We...really enjoyed our meal and drinks and we will 100% be booking again. Definitely the best meal we've had in Betws.

One of our party is allergic to dairy and soya and there is literally nothing she can have off the menu!!! Unless she wants a bowl of olives and nothing else for lunch! I find it quite unbelievable that in this day and age there...is nothing available on your menu if you have an allergy to dairy and soya. 2 of the most common allergens! We popped down the road to have a delicious pizza from Hangin Pizzaria instead! They do food without dairy and soya. Voir le carte

this was once the place to eat in betws, unfortunately no longer. we have tried to ignore the bad reviews, but they are not wrong. the pub eating burger chips were average pub meals. the supplements were sown in oil, very sharp children. tasty? about the award-winning lamb with his strange shiny gaunting and bad desserts. the red wine was good. really went downhill and it is such a scandal. the best part of our visit was the incredibly hardworking and friendly waitress, paige.

Hello, Staying in Squirrel cottage Betws, walked to the Royal Oak for a meal which we had booked. Had the dipping bread and olives for initial nibbles, then for main had lamb, dauphinois potatoes, red cabbage, fresh vegetables and jus gravy to me as...I’m not posh). Had a nice Sauvignon blanc to wash this down. It was all delicious, service was excellent- a great waitress. Nice atmosphere, not noisy, or being rushed. Amused by the case with the “ stuffed red dragon” in it. Would defo return- recommended. Thanks Royal Oak for a lush meal! Xx

Called in late afternoon for a bite to eat in the Grill Room. Was a bit unsure about what to expect after seeing some of the negative reviews; however, our meal turned to be one of the best we had during our 3 night stay...in Betws-y-coed. My husband had the piri piri chicken pitta, which had plenty of spice and came with corn on the cob, salad and chips which he enjoyed very much. I opted for the chicken breast which came with a large portion of dauphinois potatoes and mixed veg. It was well cooked and very tasty. Our waitress was lovely and after a long day climbing Snowdon it was nice to have some good tasty food. Voir le carte

Tried twice to get a drink in this establishment recently and twice we were told with great delight there was literally no room at the Inn! I have no issues with residents taking priority and I understand completely if there is no room...but what I don't get is how pleased the woman at the desk was when she turned us away. It's a small thing but if it doesn't get mentioned she will keep getting away with it. Interestingly enough in conversations with fellow residents at our hotel The Royal Oak was mentioned several times and each time the unfriendly woman at the front of house came up in conversation. It costs nothing to be pleasant to people but it could cost the hotel a while lot more if t...

we have come to our meal here after this restaurant has been recommended to us and the prices are not cheap compared to other restaurants in the opposite, so we expect it to be a good standard. Unfortunately, it did not live on ours. Expectations were like something they find in a beefeater. quite tasteless and uninteresting. the burgers were good for porn, but not half as good as the stables bar next door (I thought they shared the same kitchen so would be so good.) the sauce on my evening meal was thin and tasteless. my son ordered the salmon with harissa king prawn risotto. I expected it to have a bit pleasant flavor from the harissa, but it was so hot and totally inedible (did the chef a...

"Whenever I get the inclination to write a review it’s usually because it’s so good and I want to shout about my experience to everyone… however this is not my usual 5* recommendation! As locals we have visited this cafe on a few occasions for breakfast or a coffee stop. It’s a great location, nice decor, dog friendly and delicious food. What’s not to like? Well, the staff, or more specifically the owner! She lacks any customer service skills, she smiles through gritted teeth, orders her staff around while she stands observing (or waiting for an argument . Each time we’ve visited she’s had an issue with something. Once she argued with me because I asked for my latte to be served in a cup rather than a tall glass. She proceeded to try and educate me on coffee making (I’m barista trained ! She reluctantly gave me it to me in a mug with a jug of extra milk which wouldn’t fit into the mug anyway! More recently we arrived, it was quiet, and chose to sit in the window (the largest table as we had our dog and didn’t want him to be in the way. She rushed over and demanded we sat at another table because she “couldn’t afford for us to take up a larger table”. We moved without an issue but she was very confrontational (as always and made the rest of our dining experience uncomfortable. So uncomfortable in fact that despite being ravenous we almost didn’t order. The cafe remained quiet throughout our time there, plenty of empty tables and yet she proceeded to use the larger window table to accommodate her staff, herself and a friend who popped in. How is that fair? So my advice to you as a fellow catering/ hospitality manager is… Learn from your Trip Advisor feedback, Book yourself on a free customer service course and lead by example and if you are worried about costs reduce the number of staff. 5 staff on duty in a cafe that seats approx 25 people at full capacity is not needed. Maybe the owner should put her feet up at home and let the lovely younger people do their thing. They all look so nervous around her and are almost too afraid to speak. I’m sure they’d do a far better job without her monitoring their every move. Even the Chef (her husband maybe? looks petrified of her!! Certain people are not cut out for customer facing roles and she is one of them! I’m pretty sure she doesn’t read any of these reviews as she’s been like this since my first visit 5 years ago!! What a shame. This place could be a thriving business and a welcoming village cafe but I’m sure her confrontational attitude and unwelcoming nature put people off from returning. Such a shame as the food and coffee are delightful"
