"It pains me to leave this review as the pub was recommended to us by local friends and I have been having Sunday lunch in and around Wigan for the last 3 years and thoroughly enjoyed the meals we have had. I’m 71 and an experienced Sunday luncher so was very disappointed with the Pub overall and the food can only be described as terrible. The Pub is very tired to say the least and the bar and interior I don’t think has seen a coat of polish in a few years. It was a glorious summer day but the large beer garden and the back of the propery was locked and the only real outside space for sitting was the patio area overlooking the car park! . We ended up in the timber chalet area at the rear of the pub and bombasted with garage type pop music which might have been good if your under 20 and wanted a Rave! but hardly the right atmosphere for a family Sunday lunch. I was surprised at the amount of food left on the plates of one family eating next to us hardly a good sign for ‘home cooking’ I ended up choosing the chicken curry as I didn’t see anything on the menu that looked enticing. My partner ended up with a plate of chips as the vegetarian choices were so thin on the ground the chicken had been broiled and was a tough as old leather so not the marinated meal that I anticipated. Overall we were very disappointed so it’s very unlikely that we will be returning!! which is a shame as the pub used to have a super reputation but it seems to have lost its way."

I had the beef pie, all home made quality food and my wife had the pudding. Service was great too. Definitely recommend

I can't believe we've never dined at this charming little pub before, considering how frequently we eat out. I couldn't find a fault with the delicious food and excellent service. We will definitely be returning.

We stopped off at the Boar's Head in Standish for drinks and food on a Friday evening. The decor is good with a heated outdoor space. The food and drinks were good and the staff were quite friendly. The only drawback were the toilets which would need improving and updating. Hopefully when we return this will have changed.

My family selected this restaurant for my brother-in-law's wake. Mandy & Co were very hospitable and friendly. With only 13 of us, we all ordered from the menu. The food was outstanding and plentiful, receiving compliments from everyone for the delicious meals and excellent service. Personally, I found the gravy on my dish to be one of the best I've ever tasted. I will definitely be returning.

I have to say that the food is excellent, freshly cooked, hot and very big tasty portions. Unfortunately the service lets it down. The staff appear to be more interested in talking to each other or their friends who were in drinking. Not very attentive and we had to either go to the bar or try our best to get their attention when we wanted drinks. On top of this our mains came out whilst we were still on our starters. I would eat here again but service could be better.

Came here today after a long drive up from South Wales and were looking for somewhere to stop for a late lunch. We saw the lovely outdoor seating area so thought we'd give it a go.Im so glad we did as the food was delicious. My husband had gammon and chips which looked fabulous and I ordered a ploughman's. I've got to say,it was the best ploughman's I've had anywhere. Beautifully presented and delicious. Staff were friendly too.If we are ever up this way again we will be sure to return.

My experience at the Boars Head for lunch was underwhelming. Despite checking out the menu beforehand, I was surprised to find a 50% increase in prices upon arrival. The staff were friendly initially, however, the service from the waitress and the person we paid was lacking. The Steak Sandwich we ordered looked appetizing, but the meat was tough and the chips were bland. To top it off, other customers started bringing dogs into the restaurant, which I personally find unacceptable. Overall, I don't think I'll be returning to this establishment.

The culinary offerings at this establishment are nothing short of remarkable. I had the pleasure of ordering the Halloumi kebab, which arrived fresh, piping hot, and exquisitely delicious. The quality of the food was truly outstanding, leaving a lasting impression. Additionally, the staff members contributed to the overall enjoyment of the dining experience. Their friendly and amiable demeanor, coupled with engaging conversations, added a personal touch to the meal. While it is true that the food service might have been a tad slow, the ultimate reward of the exceptional gastronomy made the wait entirely worthwhile.

I would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to the landlady and landlord, Janet Tony Jones of The Boars Head Standish for providing an exceptional service for our family funeral wake this afternoon. Everything was perfectly organised, and special thanks to Amanda Mick for preparing a delightful fresh hot and cold buffet everyone commented on the delicious fresh and plentiful spread. Also, thanks to the entire team at The Boars Head for taking care of us and our funeral guests today. The service was outstanding, and it brightened our sad and emotional morning when we were greeted immediately by Janet and Tony personally upon our arrival. I wholeheartedly recommend this wonderful pub for a...

"After reading the reviews we was really looking forward to eating here ,however it turned out to be the worst tapas and worst service we have ever received . After waiting 10 minutes for someone to take our drinks order we then waited a further 30 mins to be served with what can only be described as toast with tasteless mushed up tomatoes on , this was inedible and hardly touched , a further 20 minutes on and we was served a single dish of chicken between two of us again this was very bland and resembled nothing like a original tapas dish more like a chicken korma again this was hardly touched . When I enquired as to where the rest of the food was I was told they was very busy . With this we decided to cut our loses and asked for the bill . Before leaving we tried to have a conversation with the manager who is also the chef to give some honest feedback ,however he wasn’t open to listening , he’s response was “it’s normal in a tapas restaurant to receive one dish at a time between two with a large gap between dishes wasn’t it explained to you that’s what tapas is “We felt this was a very patronising remark as we eat tapas on a regular basis and know this is definitely not the case . To matters worse there was people who came in after us with multiple plates and tucking in nicely to their meals . The manager who was obviously struggling to cope on a busy Saturday night should have just apologised and admitted our order had been overlooked . If you are looking for authentic Tapas with excellent service in Wigan go to Casa Carlos this place doesn’t deserve your hard earned money ."
