"After an excellent spa day last year, courtesy of a TravelZoo deal, my friend and I decided to treat ourselves again but to stay overnight this time. Despite some problems (entirely self made on my part with the booking! , the staff could not have been more helpful, changing things round for us before we arrived in order to suit our needs. Our twin room was a decent size with plenty of space for stuff and two chairs to sit on (so much nicer than always perching on the bed , a kettle and plenty of tea, and a local guide. The hotel guide in the room is a little dated though... We were given a brief tour of the facilities on arrival, and decided to eat in the bistro for dinner advised to book, we were fairly surprised to turn up at the alloted time and find it almost empty, but no matter! The food was tasty and well priced, and the service was good. The dark chocolate tart was to die for! After dinner, we made ourselved at home on the sofas and played our version of trivial pursuit, drawing several other guests into the fun! The waitress came through from the bar to sort us out some drinks, which was a nice touch. When we wanted extra hot chocolate to make in our room, Mark on reception was able to sort that out for us. A good night 's sleep, a great breakfast, and we headed to the spa for our TravelZoo day (yes, another one. We like a deal! . Some reviews seem to suggest that being on a deal leads to subpar service. This was genuinely not the case at all. There was no point where we were made to feel less because we had paid less. Lunch in the bistro was delicious again; our massages were great; we left happy. Our only mistake was not staying for longer. We 'll work on that."

Re visited the hotel to try out the restaurant again ad were not disappointed. Food and service were very good. Nice hotel and great view of hills from the Bistro.

The deal we had purchased included a two course meal in the Bistro, the service was attentive and the menu choice was good with certain meals carrying a supplement.

We dined at the Bistro on the second night of our stay and it was just as good as the first restaurant, with a completely different menu. I had tagliatelle pasta with chicken and it was very tasty. Great wine and delicious desserts.

We recently stayed at the hotel for 2 nights and choose to eat at the Bistro both nights. The food was excellent and had a reasonable choice for both vegetarians and meat eaters. Service as with the rest of the hotel is excellent. The atmosphere was relaxed and casual. One pots are great, as are the chips and the Sticky Toffee Pudding is to die for! Voir le carte

We had dinner at Bistro 1871 as part of a weekend getaway at the Appleby Manor Hotel. It was a much-needed break after the lockdown during Spring and Summer. The food was excellent and the service was attentive. The hotel itself is charming and full of old-world character. We are planning to return for my wife's birthday in October and will dine at Bistro 1871 again, as well as trying out the gourmet restaurant for our second night.

Whilst staying at Appleby Manor we ate in the bistro rather than the restaurant, mainly because it has a less formal atmosphere. The food was of a very high standard. In particular the ' Mac cheese '. Enjoyed it so much as a starter on the first night that I had it as my main the following night.. Chloe, who served us both nights was very informative, she knew the menu well and provided a relaxed but professional service throughout. Highly recommended. Mr Mrs Simpson

Was not very impressed with the Bistro, especially after reading reviews about how good it is. First we arrive to the restaurant and there is no one there to take us to our seats, 5 minutes someone eventually comes and takes our order. Had to repeat our order 3x to the lady, the couple that came in after us had their meal before us, even though we ordered first (exactly the same meal) waited 1 hour 10 minutes for our food even though it was not that busy, eventually came out and it was wrong! Was offered to take it back, but at this point I was starving so ate it. Was not really happy with the service. Voir le carte

We had an overnight stopover for a birthday party and had pre-booked a table at the restaurant. The restaurant was almost full and it took about 25 minutes before we could order and receive our drinks. The food was good overall, but the portions were very small considering the price. For example, the goulash main dish was around $15 and came in a small round dish without any salad or bread. While I don't mind paying for quality, some of us left a little hungry. The hotel itself is a lovely period property and I would recommend it for a stopover, but I wish the kitchen would provide larger portions. The staff were friendly and nice.

We booked at table in the bistro for my Mum 's birthday meal. After arriving at the hotel we were asked to sit in the lounge area. We were not offered a drink and sat there for around 20 minutes before being approached by a waitress who gave us some menus. When ordering I discussed, in detail, the serious allergies that I have. The waitress was helpful and explained that she would pass on the information to the chef. I ordered the vegetable tagine with rice. When the food arrived my meal was served with couscous instead of rice. I have a gluten allergy as explained when ordering so was unable to accept this meal. The food was taken away and I was told it would take 5 minutes for my food to b...

"We had a disappointing experience during our stay. The bedroom was quite cold, and despite asking for the heating to be turned on, we had to sit in our coats. The bathroom was freezing each morning, and the dining room didn't offer much relief either. The heating was activated for just one hour, which meant the radiator was cold again when we returned to our room. Their cost-cutting measures significantly impacted our enjoyment. We raised our concerns multiple times, but there was no one available when we settled the bill. At £100 per night for bed and breakfast (totaling over £200 including dinner), it was frustrating to be so uncomfortable. Another guest mentioned they had complained about the heating during their previous visit, only to be told there was an ongoing issue. It seems they simply won’t turn on the heating. We won’t be returning, especially since it’s quite a drive to get into town. Regarding the room, we were assigned an attic room (Room 8). It had many steep stairs and low headroom in places. While the bathroom was nice, it was also freezing. The towel rail was pointless since it was stone cold, and my husband had to skip his morning shower due to the chill. We ended up moving to Room 7, which was smaller but slightly warmer despite having a cold bathroom. The bathroom door didn’t shut properly, and the lights were all or nothing. The next morning, we moved our belongings back to Room 8 since they finally decided to turn on the electric wall heater—which they could have done from the outset. It only took the chill off for a little while. On our last night, we experienced a brief boost of heat, but it only lasted an hour. When we returned after dinner, the room was already cool again. As for nearby activities, there’s a park across a busy road, but everything else requires driving to reach shops and restaurants. Safety-wise, the hotel faces a main road, and there are very few parking spaces available (around four); otherwise, you need to park on the main road. Walking to town is possible, but it takes about 15 to 20 minutes downhill. In terms of food and drinks, the breakfast was decent. When asked if we wanted toast, we received just one slice on the same plate as the cooked breakfast. After asking for more, we had to wait a while before we were given another slice. Dinner was acceptable but nothing to write home about; it felt overpriced compared to the excellent authentic Indian restaurant we found in town, which served great food at better prices and opened at 5 PM. Overall, I'd recommend bringing warm clothes for both the bedroom and dining area; we even saw another guest sitting in her coat the entire time."
