"We stopped for two nights. We ate in the pub on both nights. We had a fantastic stay, this is a great, cosy, traditional pub in the beauty of Yorkshire. The room had everything you need, it wasn't the most modern room but no complaints. I like the little touches like a full-sized mug and the Decaff coffee bags. The first night the heating was on a little too much, it's on a thermostat and was a little warm but it wasn't too bad, as it was so cold outside. Some fellow guests we met one evening said their bed was rock hard, but, we had no complaints, my wife said it was a little lumpy on her side but I really didn't have any issues. The pub has plenty of parking around the back; where you can see they have some Glamping Pods. It is currently undergoing renovations in the room between the main bar and the dining area, which, had recently been painted and looked very nice. Allround, the pub was in a great location to be far enough out of Whitby but close enough, it only took 25mins to drive in. There is nothing around the pub, we walked to Danby the first evening but that hasn't not much in it either. However, it is perfect for walkers and those with dogs, we use it just as a base so we didn't mind and it was nice to be out in the countryside. We ate twice, both nights. Friday was busier in the pub, we did book but no need, as they had plenty of tables. We sat in the background for dinner and breakfast on both days. On the first night, I ordered off the specials board; to start I had the Bacon and Spring Onion Quiche which was lovely and for mains the venison casserole. My wife ordered the hummus bruschetta and steak and ale pie. On the second night, we just got main, both of us ordered off the specials board again, my wife got the sun-blushed tomato and brie past and I got a fantastic chicken rogan josh curry, served with a homemade popadom, naan and mango chutney, can't fault it. We really, really enjoyed the food."

"I had high hopes for this afternoon tea as it looked spectacular on the website and with a minimum price tag of £21 (double what I usually pay for it at any local cafe) I really thought it would be something special. Unfortunately I was let down. The sandwiches were nice (even though I had asked for ham and my sister had asked for smoked salmon) which she was looking forward to, they came out as ham cucumber. Don’t know why my sister didn’t get her ordered smoke salmon but anyway. Moving on to the scones.. they were not freshly made that day, clearly had been reheated in the oven for a few minutes as they were stale inside and rock hard on the outside. A tiny stingy pit of clotted cream was provided with them and 2 pots of jam (no chopped strawberries) which you might expect to receive given the price tag. You would hope the desserts cakes would be considerably better? The raspberry jelly pot had raspberries on it that were green and mouldy. At this point I was really starting to get annoyed. I could of got a nice fillet steak at a pub for the price I paid for this below average afternoon tea. It certainly didn’t reflect the ‘quality and luxury’ as portrayed on the website. I took my mouldy raspberries to the waiter and explained. He seemed confused as to what to do, took it away and then came back to ask me if I wanted another one, I said yes please. So eventually another one came (baring in mind the restaurant area had 3 other tables of 2 dining at the same time) all paying £21 PP, is it that hard to supervise the quality of food leaving the kitchens? What on earth would they of turned out had the restaurant been remotely busy? Considering 8 people were dining for afternoon teas., that’s £168 minimum for 8 lots of tiny average sandwiches, stale scones.. and mouldy raspberries, the macaron was nice, tasteless choice pastry with tasteless chocolate mousse in it and a carrot cake I by this point couldn’t be bothered to eat. Certainly nothing grabbed my tastebuds and gave me a huge smile. I will stick to the value for money and excellent quality afternoon teas from my local cafes at £10 per person. Massive shame. Oh and the staff could not care less about my experience as I explained whilst I was there, might of been slightly appeased if they had knocked some money off the bill. However are people really that gullible to pay for such poor quality food without saying anything? I gave two stars as the building is attractive clean and the gardens are kept lovely. Staff seem quite attentive apart from when you complain or point out mouldy food then don’t really know how to deal with customers expecting high standards."

"I’ve always wanted to try here. Living local surprisingly we haven’t. My parents have though and they enjoyed their 1st visit Unlike this time. We’re a family of 5 my daughter registered disabled we parked in the designated disabled bays. Although wasn’t necessary we displayed a blue badge. Walked inside to be what can only be described as targeted by the lady(manager) who was running the place, telling us we can’t park in the disabled spot we had because it’s for disabled customers. Not politely came over and asked if we should be parked here, the restaurant had a fair few customers in. And all looked over towards us. My daughter felt humiliated. I said for her to just come along over to the table we had reserved. This shouldn’t be happening. We are now in 2023. And discrimination unfortunately is as ever still happening. We were served by a young lad who was kind enough. Although we felt by this point everyone had their opinion of us. The food was served by the lady in question. She had no manners and didn’t seem She was happy to serve us! Once we’d had desserts we paid. And left saying bye but still again nothing! We have eaten much better from the takeaway over the road. They are second to none. And very friendly unlike walkers. So we won’t be visiting walkers anymore. Unfriendly uninviting and rude. Customer care skills greatly need polishing up on!"
