"The Olive Branch has become a favourite and we returned for my birthday lunch and a visit to the Yew Tree Avenue. We ate outside in the sunshine in one of their uniquely decorated gazebos, although the pub is lovely and full of character. Before...I go any further, I write this review because I know that they take on board our comments and strive to get better and better. There was a big lunch party in the barn, so parking was tight and we were worried about noise. We needn’t have worried as the hubbub subsided once their food was served. We ate from their “Lunch for Less” menu. Heritage tomato gazpacho with smoked creme fraiche and wild garlic and I had the pub made black pudding with apple, curried pickled onion, egg yolk and crispy pork. Both delicious although I’d have liked more of the pickle and the crispy pork. Decent size portions none the less. We both had the pan fried sea bass with cockles and prawn pearl barley in a shellfish bisque with sea vegetables, lemon and fennel. We were given a spoon for the “soup” but it was all absorbed by the pearl barley. We were expecting it in a little cup on the side... so why the spoon? Unfortunately, the sea bass was only one fillet cut between us. Not good enough when mains are over £18. Maybe they were running low, because of the big lunch in the barn? Having said that, the skin was deliciously crisp and melt in the mouth and the flavours were superb. We don’t tend to go for meals that are all protein and carbs, so it would have made our day if the sea vegetables and fennel had been much more evident or we’d been asked if we’d like other a salad on the side. As for asking, no one came back to ask if everything was alright... I had asked for the beer list to order another with the main, but we had finished it before anyone came back... may be because of the big lunch in the barn??? Next time we’ll book a different day if there’s a big lunch in the barn! The deserts were every bit as good as you’d expect. Banana pannacotta, dark chocolate mousse, hazelnut ice and Sticky toffee pudding, miso butterscotch and Guinness ice cream. I’d have been happy with just the Guinness ice cream! The birthday celebration was marked with petit fours for both of us, on a platter iced with Happy Birthday. A nice touch, thank you. A small deduction was made by us for the standard of service, which we explained, and were thanked. Hopefully on our next visit, these inconsistencies will be rectified. The Olive Branch can excel... and they do listen."

"Staying in Manton for a week I did a desk top survey of the pub restaurants in the area based on TA reviews and the establishments ' menus as posted on their website. We some heistation we landed up at the Fox for a Saturday evening meal. We both had haddock spinach fishcakes off the specials board for starters and beef pie chicken salad for mains, with yours truly seldom able to resist crème brûlée for afters... Well, the meat pie was fantastic nicely cooked shortcrust pastry top bottom and packed with tasty and prime quality beef. I always take others best ever tributes with more than a pinch of salt but this was indeed one of the best steak pies I 've ever had. Save for overcooked mange tout all the food was pretty faultless and the service very attentive too, so we booked to return on the Monday. Unfortunately for us none of the Saturday team was there on the Monday and it was obvious from the presentation (my wife had the same starter salad main) that the kitchen was in different hands too. I should probably have gone for the pie again but, as it was only two days later, I went for the slightly more expensive lamb shank off the specials board instead. Sadly that was only average as lamb shanks go. So full marks for the Saturday, not so good on the Monday, but perhaps we were just unlucky. It certainly has a nice atmosphere and I would happily go again if in the area."

"So where do I start Booked a table for 8 at 7.30pm. So many things on the menus were not available which was actually started to get funny as pretty much everything we asked for initially wasn’t available. In the end we all managed to order something. The food actually wasn’t bad at all. We were then asked at about 8.30 if we would like to order dessert which we all did. Bearing in mind half the mains menu wasn’t available we suggested he found out what wasn’t available on the sweet menus before we ordered. He came back saying everything was available so we all ordered. 10 mins after ordering the lad came back and said the kitchen was closed and we could have no desserts!!! We were then told that as we had a child with us that we had to leave by 9pm. This was a few mins before 9pm. Bear in mind we had booked a table in the restaurant not a pub or bar so the 9pm law is irrelevant. We explained this and also politely let them know that we were not going anywhere until we had finished our drinks that we had paid for. So then the manageress with the blonde hair turns up and gets really moody and asks us to leave reiterating that it’s the law as we have a child with us. Clearly she wanted to go home. This girl has clearly no idea of what good customer service is. The other staff were embarrassed by the way she spoke to us. Then from the other side of the room a lovely lady who overheard the conversation told the manageress that the Nelson was once the best place to eat and drink in Oakham and that it’s been ruined but the current owners/group and the only reason she and her husband went there in that night was to watch the rugby as they knew it would be quiet. She went on to say that she could not believe the waiter took out order off us and 10 mins later said the kitchen was closed. The local lady then said she was embarrassed that us out of town visitors had experienced this and suggested we should have gone to the wheatsheaf instead. Just in case the owners read this. The lad with the curly hair was very pleasant, as was the slim girl with dark brown hair. The blonde manageress needs to be replaced."
