"the building itself is really picturesque inside and outside especially the alkove through the window for 2 where we sat, which was very pleasant both my and my partner main and dessert were a very good size, inexpensive, and very tasty personal were very friendly and accommodating I have attached a few pictures of what I had, although in my greed tanked the image of the main skinning the black puddy. also, the image could not convey it, but the dessert was really great (probably twice from what it would get to some other places)."

"We went for Sunday lunch. The pub looks nice from the outside. It 's an old world place in an old world village location. However inside the decor is very disappointing. The dining room has an artex ceiling with unconvincing wooden beams which is a shame as it 's a genuinely old building. The bar looks like it dates from the 1970s. The curtains look cheap and none of the furnishings look either chic or old world, so fail on all counts. On top of that the pub appears to be staffed by kids . It 's totally lacking in any ambience. The menu was very restrictive. There was no Sunday roast, although it appears that there usually is. The one bright spot is that the chips were very good. However, in spite of the chips I recommend that you book elsewhere."

"Carnarvon Arms was very charming. The location was perfect for our Highclere Castle tour. Plenty of parking. Great Sunday roast at the pub. Fun pub with lots of board games to play. Our rooms were simple yet comfortable. I appreciated the Nespresso machine and complimentary water. The breakfast was very good and I loved the menu. We had a bit of a miscommunication regarding an extra child's bed, but the new management was an absolute dream and so professional about making things right. Highly recommend this place for both their rooms and dining."

"Came to watch football the other day and have some food and drinks with friends. When looking at the menu I could be there for ages salivating before even ordering. So many nice things to choose from. Once food arrived it was extremely tasty and very pleasing on the eye. Service was very quick and the staff were lovely and friendly. Atmosphere was good and a nice busy pub for the area which is not always the way these days with the current cost of living crisis. Will be back again on Tuesday for more football and also to try some more food out. Looking forward to the occasion. 5 out of 5 for me."

"Well well well, went out on a Friday evening. First night of the Euros, fine. Little did we know we’d walked in the lair of of Ben H, a bastion of fine customer service and purveyor of fine, fine wines. Alongside this Jacob (ohhhhh Jacob) saved my good friend Dan glasses as we were leaving and delivered them back to us. This is incredibly important as Dan has the eyesight of a star nosed mole. He’s effectively blind. 5 stars, 3 thumbs up as I’m sure you’re aware humans only have 2 thumbs, you do the maths. Exhilarating, compassionate, titillating. Will be coming back for more."

"I used to enjoy this restaurant when I lived in the village. The food was delicious, but I had some digestive issues the next morning. The service was a bit pushy and invasive, constantly trying to clear our plates even when we weren't finished. It was a bit disappointing, to be honest. Hopefully, it was just a one-time bad experience, as I know many people who still like dining here. Overall, the atmosphere and service were not as great as I had hoped."

"After visiting Highclere Castle, we decided to have Sunday dinner at this pub. The staff was friendly, and we were seated quickly. However, when our meals arrived, they were cold and unappetizing. The roast chicken dinner was dry and the vegetables were cold. When we complained, the meals were reheated but still not satisfactory. The manager was unhelpful and defended the quality of the food, despite our negative experience. We will not be returning to this pub and recommend avoiding it due to the poor food quality and management."

"eating is certainly very good, also the quality, quantity and price are very good. I really enjoyed eating here, I'll come back in definitiw. I recommend it 100%. I just say one thing, I think the dessert menu is a bit short, I would add more desserts or more desserts, I also think they are too small. the brownie, this piece brownie with ice was really too small for the price of each dessert. this should be improved."

"Visited this pub with 7 work colleagues. We were warmly welcomed and the staff couldn’t do enough to help you. There is parking directly outside the pub in a public Carpark which is free. I ordered the following: Crab cakes- nicely cooked but slightly bland....A good size salad did accompany it though. Smoked sausage and mash- the sausages were ok, mash average and the gravy was very watery. Sticky toffee pudding- average Overall- I would definitely come back for a drink and the nice atmosphere but would give the food a miss. This was the general consensus of all my work colleagues. There was a quiz on the evening we visited but did not stay to partake."

"Had a takeaway delivered a few days ago and the food arrived when they said it would. However I would like to comment on the packaging and presentation of the food. Curry and rice dishes delivered in foil containers which don't seal well, consequently spills everywhere. Plastic containers seal much better for transporting. These are used by other restaurants. Salad side dishes in plastic bags. These were therefore covered in the spillage. Taking everything out my hands were covered along with worktop and dish to place in oven to keep warm. Must have used about half a kitchen roll clearing up. Otherwise food good but needs a little more attention to detail."

"I have been a patron of this restaurant for the past 25 years, and it has always been a delightful experience. However, my recent visit was quite disappointing. Despite having a confirmed booking, we had trouble being seated as we arrived five minutes early. The restaurant was empty at the time. A large party then arrived, causing chaos and making our experience noisy and hectic. We encountered issues with the kitchen, resulting in some of our starters not being available. When they did arrive, they were disappointingly presented with odd plastic decorations instead of the usual garnish. Our main courses also fell short in terms of portion size and quality compared to previous visits. Additionally, we were charged for bottled water and lemonade when we requested tap water. A 10% service charge was added to the bill, which we questioned due to the poor service we received. The staff became rude and insisted we pay the service charge, despite our dissatisfaction. We reluctantly paid a reduced amount out of principle. Overall, the service was subpar and left us feeling disappointed and intimidated. Despite wanting to support local businesses, the lack of customer service tarnished our experience. Unfortunately, I will not be returning to this restaurant in the future."

"We have been a number of times as it’s very local to our house, everytime we dine here it’s always a new set of staff Gary the owner is always very helpful but the remainder of the staff seem to be less helpful. We received an email stating that Portsmouth arms are kids eat free one day only. When it came to paying the bill we was told they are refusing these vouchers because head office sent the email without telling the pub. We took 3 children so was a saving of £18.75 the manager was adamant she wasn’t going to accept the voucher. We wasn’t the only ones in the pub using this offer it took around 10 minutes of me telling the manager I’m not paying for the children because this voucher clearly states Portsmouth arms hatchwarren 1st March one day only offer. It wasn’t until Gary came back that he agreed to honour the offer. Not a pleasant experience don’t think we will be using the pub again which is a shame because it’s a lovely pub but the staff seem to quite rude at times and everytime we have been over the last 12 months or so there has always been some kind of issue with food or the bill etc.... this is a shame as it’s less than a 5 minutes walk from our house. Gary does need to invest quite a lot of time into training his staff I think as this is where the issues always seem to coming from. Not a good experiencez"

"My friends and I regularly meet at this restaurant once a month, and we always have a pleasant experience. The menu is delicious and the staff is attentive and professional. During our recent visit, we were served by a charismatic waitress named Tequila. She was professional, friendly, and enthusiastic in taking our orders. The food arrived in a timely manner (within 30-40 minutes, which is reasonable for preparation) and looked just as appetizing as the pictures on the menu. The comfort pub food had a good variety of options to choose from, making it easy to try something different each time we visit. It's a great place to enjoy a meal with friends while having a drink. I will continue to visit for lunchtime catch-ups with friends. For my main course, I had the Beef Lasagne with Salad and Flatbread, followed by a delicious Biscoff Sundae for dessert."

"Second time visiting here Lovely traditional country pub with beams across the ceilings. Dogs are welcome. The Pub is split into eating side and a casual snug side and is complimented by a spacious bet garden with climbing graves for the kids. Varied normal menu of traditional pub fayre although tonight we thought we'd try out the fish menu. Nice range and we had the Seabass and Swordfish, both well cooked and very tasty. Good selection of potatoes to accompany as well as choice of salads or veg. My Swordfish plate may look a little empty but was my choice as I didn't fancy salad or veg, the Dauphinois potatoes however were excellent. Staff were attentive, chatty, friendly and helpful, couldn't ask for better. A lovely evening and well worth a trip off your passing."

"I recommend the parlour tearoom! we had the afternoon for a baby shower consisting of 14 people and were assigned to the square that was perfect as we had a little private sphere, but didn't feel that we had hidden ourselves. the place was booked and a birthday party had happened at the same time, but this did not affect the service or our joy at all, as there was space for everyone and was nothing too much annoyed for the personal. the personal is beautiful and helpful from the request and booking to the event. we were allowed to decorate the corner and the table before booking, which was really helpful as it meant that we did not hurry. the ladies are attentive, welcoming and friendly. there was a lot to eat, until the point that the youngest member of the party called “more cakes?!” when we already arrived the sandwiches, crans and scorpions and the plates of the cake (which we brought to the house in party bags). will be back soon!"

"I went to this restaurant with some friends for dinner. We all liked the food and found the prices to be reasonable. My only complaint is that I wished there was more custard with my crumble, as the half-full jug was not enough. The staff were friendly and the service was good, but I had mentioned my disability when booking online and was disappointed to find our table was down steps and far from the entrance and toilets. Additionally, there was no designated disabled parking space, which made it challenging for me as the car park was full. Because of these factors, I likely won't be returning to this restaurant."

"Firstly just to say, all the reviews left here seeking this place to be a top class eatery, its NOT, its a Wetherspoons, if your expecting food from The ritz, then go to the Ritz. These places are amazing value for money, thats why these people went there whom left negative reviews. Ive NEVER had a bad pint or food in ANY of these establishments. This particular Wetherspoons in the top of town in Basingstoke is always a pleasure to visit, always relaxed, attentive staff and a quick and polite service. I must add Ian in the bar is the ultimate polite and courteous bar man, his patience and manorism is second to none, i would pay this guy to give other bar staff from other pubs a lesson on just plain and simple being polite. Wetherspoons, you should look out for this employee, he will go far, he is the best you will find, think yourself very lucky you,ve got him."
