"SOGGY BOTTOM! I had a craving for pie! After surgery the previous week, I needed comfort food as any form of distraction from my pain. After a long time searching on Google for lunchtime venues to eat what I wanted, I decided the Bolton Arms would be great for lunch. My husband and I had not been there for a number of years where we previously had a fabulous dinner so it was time to visit again. Also, I didn’t want a corporate chain run group of pubs/restaurants bulk buying produce to ‘turbo’ in giant ovens. No, I wanted homemade real food. Reading the present menu homemade pie was advertised so I rang the Bolton Arms to confirm this item would be available and it was. We went for lunch. Drinks were ordered at the bar which we took to our table, then after a little longer than would have liked our food order was taken. Our food arrived after quite a long time. My pie steaming hot … but where’s the meat? I was presented with a solid hard topped pastry shell with just a minimal of ham hock meat (I was advised it was ham hock) which was drowning in an indescribable grey/white sauce and accompanied by soft carrots with an odd perfume aftertaste. The cabbage resembled a food stuff my grandmother would have boiled for two weeks! Cutting into this, the pastry base disintegrated leaving a pale soggy pie bottom. Nothing was seasoned. I guess the Chef had the day off! Please see two photos of pies I would expect and the pie I received. I think anyone reading this will distinguish the difference. A couple arrived after us and also ordered the pie. Watching over my husbands’ shoulder, each fork was heaped full of meat with a plate of steaming fresh vegetables. I have been short changed! Being hungry distorts immediate reactions and therefore a complaint at the time was not made. My husband just had a sausage sandwich which was nice – thank you. But for someone who never comments, did tell me he thought my food was pretty dreadful. The Bolton Arms is a traditional pub and listed building. The interior is dark and in desperate need of a little more comfort that would benefit modernising even simple fabrics and décor, but please put the heating on. I know it was lunchtime and only 4 tables were sat but to put my coat back on to keep warm is unacceptable. This pub felt cold, dusty and totally uninviting. Would we return. NO. But in a few years to see if changes have been taken on board. Yes. Good luck for your future The Bolton Arms."

We were a family of 19 for a celebration lunch on a Saturday. The food was excellent and great value, the service was attentive and the restaurant itself clean and well run. We had a lovely time, thank you so much. Highly recommended. Voir le carte

I was really disappointed with my experience at this restaurant. It used to be a bustling and charming pub, but when I came here for my anniversary dinner, I found that the service was very poor. Although the food was okay, there were several items on the menu that were not available.

I came to this restaurant for a special birthday after being recommended by a friend. Unfortunately, it was a disappointing experience. The staff seemed very unhappy, and the food reminded me of basic, cheap items from my college days. I do not plan on returning. Overall, it was a terrible decision.

Dined with friends after a pre dinner drink in the lovely garden. Between us all, we had bruschetta, tempura prawns, sausage roll with black pudding starters. Mains were steak ale pie, calves liver and sausages. Pud rice pudding with lemon and a crumble. All aspects of the meal were delicious and served by cheerful efficient staff. The wine beer were good too. Great value. Definitely worth a visit. Voir le carte

We held our Wedding Reception at The Bolton Arms on the 13th November 2021. What can I say! Duncan and Emily were so accommodating right from the moment we met them and were discussing menus and room layout etc. On the day we couldn’t have wished for a better venue, the staff were friendly and attentive and the food was absolutely amazing. We had a fantastic time and would thoroughly recommend The Bolton Arms for any events, they definitely exceeded our expectations and made our day perfect. Thank you so much Emily and Duncan.

I recently dined at this pub on a pleasant spring evening. The building itself was quirky and interesting, with a peculiar framed pair of yellow underpants on one wall (although I didn't get a chance to investigate further). The staff appeared to be somewhat disinterested and mentioned staff shortages. I ordered a chicken parma ham dish with roast vegetables and a beer. The beer was good, but I was surprised to see the chef behind the bar, leaving me wondering who was actually doing the cooking. Unfortunately, the food was terrible. It looked unappetizing, with overcooked chicken and parma ham covered in a thick, unappealing brown sauce. Despite the disappointing meal, I tried to eat what I...

"Our first visit. We cannot praise thank The Wellie highly enough. What a find! Peacefully rural on a quiet road to the south of Baughurst. A classic, pretty country pub, now converted to an excellent restaurant, with three rooms. What strikes you first is how immaculate The Wellie is, inside and out. The large garden is a delight. Masses of dahlias and all manner of bushes and plants. Birds, birds and more birds. Do check out the vegetable garden beyond the rear car park. You then walk inside to the warmest of relaxed welcomes from the owners, Simon and Jason, and manager, Sheila, and their lovely young helpers. Nothing is too much trouble. The first thing you’ll spot is the array of fruit, veg salad for sale by the pub bar – the Wellie Deli. Along with home made jams, chutneys, quiches, etc. I then spotted the two hand pumps! Longdog Golden Poacher Basingstoke Pride. The seating inside is for diners every session is a sell out! But I was very happy to sup several excellent pints of well kept draught Basingstoke Pride in the garden – until I discovered their Negronis! Truly the best this side of Kwant (Piccadilly). We’d opted for the room in the pub: the Apartment. Two rooms on the first floor, knocked through. Enormous comfy bed, large rainfall shower, sofa, mini bar – two TVs! Free milk homemade shortbread. One of the discoveries we made here is the fabulous tea they serve from Prince Sons. As you can tell by now, we were very happy with our first stay at The Wellie… and then we went down for dinner! A truly exceptional menu from Jason’s kitchen, which changes each evening. Highlights were the scallops wrapped in pancetta, the pollack, the lamb pot pie, the twice baked cheese souffle, the NY cheesecake, the rhubarb ice cream, the treacle tart... All so fresh, tasty, and mainly from their garden. What we loved most was it was relaxed but fine dining without the tiny portions. The Full English breakfast the next morning was equally tasty. All in all, we did not want to go home! Thank you Simon, Jason Sheila. We will be back, soon."
