"I went to the Alex for my birthday meal with three friends. We had planned to go to the Victoria Stakes but had to find another venue as it was closed because of a fire. There was no one else in the restaurant and it was very cold, despite the fire being lit. I hadn 't realised how 'meaty ' the Alex menu was I don 't eat meat! The only main courses that I could eat were fish and chips or mussels. I chose the mussels and these were really nice. My friends who ordered the fish and chips were disappointed to find that the chips were doorsteps rather than 'fries ' and also found the fish had too much batter. The wine went down well. It was a good evening but I won 't rush back."

Went to the Maynard Arms for a quiz night It was a lot of fun and something you should do if you live nearby.

possibly the worst roast I've ever had. Dry, overcooked and tasted of nothing. The veg was sweet corn and green beans... They'd run out of everything else. Not what you expect at those prices on a Sunday mid afternoon.

Friendly service. Quite disappointing the quality of the meat we had. Not much flavour and very chewy beef in our sunday roast. Chouch End offers much better for cheaper in plenty of other places. It 's a pity as the pub is very nice. Voir le carte

Lovely friendly pub. We took advantage of their after work drinks 2 for the price of one cocktails and enjoyed the delicious Gin Old Fashioned on their terrace. Then a cosy corner for Tuna Tartar followed by Rib Eye steak with a nice Malbec. I will be coming back again and again. A great find.

As regular visitor to the Alex for evening drinks, we were really looking forward to trying out a meal here on Friday, where there is an offer of 3 courses for £18. Unfortunately we weren't aware until we got seated that it was a set menu, and not many of the options took out fancy. So we opted for food outside of the offer. My date and I both ordered the burger and chips. Unfortunately, both were so greasy they were difficult to finish. It's a shame because the Alex itself is a lovely pub with a great atmosphere. We will continue to go there but only for drinks, not the food.
