"BEWARE This is a pub that we go to on a regular basis. However, the past couple of times we have been there, it has gone downhill. A group of 4 of us went there last night for drinks and food. The service for the drinks was slow but acceptable. For food we ordered one main course, one starter and 5 minutes after that order, a portion of chips was also ordered. The starter and main took ages to arrive, (the salt and pepper squid and the vegan burger). Unbelievably, as the server brought the squid across, the landlord/lady/manager? called him across and promptly took one of the pieces of squid off our plate and ate it! The server then brought the plate to our table. Obviously, we sent the plate back and told them we wanted it replaced with a fresh portion. Again, we waited ages before it arrived. About maybe 1 hour after ordering the chips, they still hadn't arrived (the pub was not busy, actually very empty for a Saturday night) we complained about the time taken for the chips, maybe 10 minutes later they finally arrived. So our gripes in summary, exceedingly slow service and a manager who thinks it's acceptable to eat food directly of a customers plate. No wonder it was empty. AVOID"

We had a lovely lunch with mum today. The bar staff and Manager made tasty food and drinks and gave a lovely personal touch to the occasion . The food was good and go with a BIG appetite!! Good loos.

I highly recommend The Chequers in Steyning for its fantastic food, cooked by a young, dynamic, and professional chef, and accompanied by excellent bar staff. Situated on the main road, this restaurant does not have parking available. However, they offer delicious food and beer at affordable prices. It is just a short walk from the public car park. The menu may not be extensive, but it is sufficient for a midday meal accompanied by a pint. The service is rated at 4 out of 5, as is the location. A highlight of this establishment is its peaceful atmosphere.

Steyning is a lovely old town full of character and so is this deceptively old pub. Enjoyed a perfect pint of Harvey's. Used to often enjoy a post work pint with colleagues here. 15th Cent interior in this old coaching inn. Nearby activities: Sports field with amazing views few minutes walk. Town centre with historic houses and shops. Walkability: In High Street short walk car park and bus stops. Food drinks: Good range of pub dishes on menu but didn't eat on this occasion.
