"After a long journey to visit the gardens our first stop was the tearooms. The choice of sandwiches was extremely disappointing. The only sandwiches with any salad in them were on gluten free bread, great if you are celiac, not so great if you’re not. The vast majority of the sandwiches were either vegetarian or vegan, again great if that is your preference but not so good if you’re not but overall nothing looked very appealing. Bland slices of bread trapped behind plastic sheeting. There were a couple of salads that looked very nice but as salad was for dinner we opted not to have those. We opted instead for panini’s what a mistake! Vile! Ham cheese tiny bit of flavourless ham with the texture of rubber paired with some tasteless unknown stringy cheese. Mozzarella, tomato and basil tasteless mozzarella, bland, anaemic tomato slices with two basil leaves. We also had a sausage roll which was as equally unpleasant to eat. There was a limited number of sauces to go with the food (no brown sauce or mustard). The staff were very helpful and pleasant and the tea was fine. We didn’t complain as there was nothing the staff could do as everything is brought in from a supplier although one has to question why. It’s a shame that the cafe is so awful because the garden is lovely and this lets it down."

This restaurant offers a nice variety of sandwiches and cakes, but it is on the pricier side. I was very disappointed to find out that they only accept card payments, which is why I am giving them a one-star rating. Customers should always have the choice to pay with cash. I will not be coming back here.

We’ve been here before but the relaunch has not improved things. Do yourself a favour and buy a sandwich and a can of coke from a petrol station and have them in the garden. You’ll pay two thirds of the price and the quality will be the same. Also weirdly, the prices marked on the shelves are sometimes *more* then you’ll actually pay.

After strolling through the gardens, we visited the café for some water, coffee, and cake. The cakes were delicious and the service from the friendly and efficient ladies was top-notch. We enjoyed our experience so much that we returned a few weeks later on our way to visit friends. We had ham and cheese toasties for lunch, followed by more delicious cakes. Yum!

I recently went to this restaurant for afternoon tea and scones. I was surprised to be served the smallest amount of butter in a tiny dish, as if it had been carefully measured. The half teaspoon of jam was also served in a minuscule dish. I was disappointed that they did not provide a nice little pot of Tiptree jam like other places do, or wrapped butter portions. It seemed like they were trying to cut costs without lowering the prices. Voir le carte

Visited the gardens on a warm and sunny day which made it idyllic . The gardens are well tended but not too formal with different terrains that are well identified. Plenty of places to sit on a bench and soak up the atmosphere. The tearoom was selling pre-packed food items that were fresh ,tasty and sensibly priced. Well worth a visit. The staff were all friendly and helpful especially those tending the gardens who were happy to chat and advise.

Visited on Thursday 05th May 2022. Reviewed the gardens separately but found the tearoom, nursery and shop wonderful in themselves and they have the added bonus of being accessible without having to pay the OTT entry fee. Not great options if your on any sort of diet but putting that aside the pre-packed food choices were good. Could benefit from offering Jacket Potatoes. Great indoor and outdoor seating options including covered exterior seating near the nursery. One great thing was the size of the teapots and corresponding milk jugs, really generous and a real plus.

We had a pot of tea for two, and two cakes. First the good. The tea was excellent and a large pot which we were very happy about. And plenty of outdoor tables half in shade/under cover. But now the not so good There were several large layer cakes which just seemed much bigger than we wanted so we ordered raspberry/coconut cake gluten free cake and a raspberry/almond bake. Given that it was gluten free the raspberry/coconut cake was quite nice, moist and tasty. But the raspberry/almond bake was inedible a very nasty and unpleasant flavour. The tearoom gain a point back for the quick response to our email (especially given it was Bank Holiday weekend). Voir le carte

After watching the beautiful garden for years on BBC1's Gardener's World, I finally had the opportunity to visit it for my birthday. Despite being over a 2-hour drive away, I knew it would be worth it. To my surprise, the garden was still in full bloom with stunning pink flowers attracting bumblebees. The orchard trees and well-maintained gardens were a sight to behold. The ponds, alpine plants, and abundance of wild strawberries added to the charm. The cafe and gift shop were a must-visit, offering delicious coffee, cakes, and sandwiches at very reasonable prices. The garden center had plenty of seating and tables, making it a lively and inviting atmosphere. The plants were well-organized i...

Have not been here since pre-covid so was shocked at the changes. My daughter and I are coeliacs and are used to having a reduced menu wherever we go. We've been happy to have a jacket potato on previous visits, but the only hot food offered today was carrot and coriander soup with bread or a cheese scone at £6.95! I had £1 taken off as there was no gluten free option to have with it. Rather pricey I thought. My daughter is a vegan and there was nothing to buy with a GF/vegan label, so she had nothing to eat at all. They used to have a bowl of fruit but even that has been withdrawn now. I suggest that whoever runs the tearoom has a rethink and get up to date with current trends. Ok you may s...

"We came as a group of 10 for my Mother in Laws 60th birthday, and I must say it was a shambles. Please let me say, that we have been many times prior to this and have had excellent food and fantastic service, so not sure what has happened. Firstly, my Father in Law had to pay a deposit for 12 of us, which was absolutely fine, however, one of those was for a baby who would not have been eating. Unfortunately the mother and baby were unable to attend due to illness, so we lost £10 of the deposit. I would like to Firstly ask, why was we charged for a baby, who was never going to be eating? Secondly, we asked for a pitcher of beer, and when this was served, we were given 3 (out of 4) of the most dirtiest glasses. The beer from previous drinkers was still in the bottom, hence the staining of brown at the bottom of the glass. This is totally unacceptable, and this could actually cause serious health issues to people drinking from them. The waitress brought the first two starters out, prawn cocktails, and dumped it infront of a parson who didn 't even order it, and even after we told her who they were for, just left it there.....would you not have picked this up and actually served it to the correct person? The prawn cocktails came out on a slate and as much as this was very nicely presented, knowing that someone with only the use of one arm had ordered this, it would have been a better option to put this on a plate, so food could be scraped to the edge of the plate and picked up. Rather than a husband having to put his fork up against his wife 's and juggle getting the food on. That 's just a food for thought, incase you have anyone else in this position in the future. We then had the mains served. Out of the 10 orders, were four full racks of ribs. One of these came out as a half. We asked the waitress if this was correct and she said, sorry, she would get the other half out. This came out AFTER the person had finsihed their dinner, which meant they had to take this away in a take away box. Seemed like there was no urgency to correct the error immediately. The burgers, I am sorry to say, are an actual joke. The burgers themselves looked like the small ones you get from Iceland. But yet, are being charged at nearly £14. That was shocking. The chips, were edible, but burnt. And again, please think about putting it on a plate (or atleast asking the person eating it what they would prefer) and not a wooden chopping board. A chopping board is for chopping after all...... We then asked for our cake to come out, so we could sing happy birthday and blow the candles out. We got told yes no problem, but you will be charged £2 per person for eating there at no point had we mentioned we wanted to eat it there and had actually already mentioned this prior to handing over the cake. We opted not to have a dessert as we felt quite deflated to be honest. When the bill came out, I asked if the 3 for 2 drinks had been deducted and she said no, thats only Friday 's . I think you need to make that clearer on your menu, as it just states Monday... Tuesday...etc and the Friday 's. But your drinks deal just says Evenings you need to amend that to specifically say Friday evenings as it is in fact false advertisement on your part. The bill came up, minus the £50 deposit (still baffled why you charged £5 for a baby) and to my surprise a £27 service charge. I asked for this to be removed, as I find this quite shocking to put on any bill. A service charge is not a given, it is a discretion by those who are paying. You cannot expect anyone to pay a service charge if they feel the service has not been up to scratch. As I previously said above, we have been here multiple times before and always had great service and exceptional food. Last night, just was not the same. It is a shame, as we come here for birthdays and we will be thinking twice now, due to the above."
