"We have visited Balutschi with my sister and two kids and were welcomed with open arms, though the younger child was not always behaving too well. The interior is very cozy and the smell is superb (don't worry - somehow it does not stay on your clothes). We got served very fast and started a feast of sense. Maybe it's just me who loves Pakistani food, but I thoroughly enjoyed it and had a great time. My dish was as spicy as it gets, yet my stomach survived and never complaint - this speaks a lot about the quality of the food. Will come back once in Hamburg again!"

A good place to discover Pakistani flavours and try new cuisine. Friendly staff, good food and massive portions.

This place has a nice atmosphere, okay service and a good price-quality balance. The chai is amazing, and so is the Mango lassi. Food is very good and traditionally served.

Balutschi is one of my favorite restaurants in Hamburg. I tried many of their vegetarian dishes, which were all delicious. The portions are very satisfying, the service friendly and the prices fair. Also the atmosphere is cozy - you can choose between tables or a carpet sitting area.

It is difficult to generalise on curries as they vary depending on the taste buds of the inherent country.Balutsch gives a good tasty curry, not hot, and the karahi I had was heavily nut based in the sauce. the starters and bread are good. the surroundings are a bit kitsch, but the service is excellent and friendly. The local taste is not UK but is very pleasant. Voir le carte

I visited on a Saturday night with my partner. The restaurant was very busy but we were promptly greeted and found a space to sit despite not having a booking. We ordered the vegetarian thali starter, which was pleasant, but a little unvaried. The main dishes of lamb vindaloo and chicken palak were lovely. Not spicy, but very tasty! The service was fantastic and the waiters were sympathetic to my attempts to order auf Deutsch!

After having been compelled to eat continental and Turkish food for a prolonged period, this restaurant came as a welcome change and closer to the North Indian food we have in India. The staff is excellent in explaining the cuisine, size of portions and friendly attitude. We were a large group and ordered almost all the types of meat, biryani and breads (tandoori roti, kulchas etc.). Must say I loved the fish curry and the lassi took me back.

From the outside this unpretentious corner restaurant does not look particularly promising. Somewhat typical slightly old fashioned looking interiour, too. But the food: excellent. The past Pakistani/Indian restaurant I have tried in Germany and beyond. All dishes have a unique taste and texture, they appear freshly prepared and have pungent and clearly defined spiciness to them. The herbal lassi just wonderful. Friendly and accommodating staff, and very reasonable prices. Voir le carte

I was hungry after a workday on a business trip and I stumbled upon this restaurant -- it was near my hotel. I ordered a Lamb Vindaloo and asked for it to be "indisch scharf." It certainly was -- I very much enjoyed the spiciness of the vindaloo sauce. But I was disappointed by the lamb in the dish -- not much of it, and there was not much lamb flavor there. Also the rice served with this dish seemed to be plain white rice -- no cumin, safran, or other seasonings that I could discern. Kind of boring, really.

We were early mid week diners and surprised to see quite a few patrons already eating. The menu was varied with a great selection of dishes, meat, fish, veg. Waiter was very attentive without being overly so. I dined with my wife and we shared a Mango Chicken Curry, a Prawn Biryani and a Garlic Nan. All were superb hot and tasty. I asked for the Biryani medium spicey and it was exactly right for me. The fresh garlic on the nan gave it a real nice hit! We will certainly be going here again whenever in Hamburg.

"There's always a question (in my mind, anyway) as to Michelin's accuracy/usefulness outside of France. In the US, it's not very helpful at all and in Europe ex-France, I've found it hit and miss. Haerlin represented only my second stab at a two-star in Germany and the first meal (Heinz Winkler), while a thoroughly wonderful overall experience, felt like the second star might have been a stretch. Not so at Haerlin, this was a two-star meal that stands fork-to-fork with any I can remember. The food is stylized to within an inch of its life, but close to flawless in both conception and execution. Outside of a large selection of generally unremarkable breads and a luke-warm roasted onion broth added to an amuse at table side that probably should have been hotter, the meal was simply one perfect dish after another. Maybe the sorbet intermezzo was a little old school in such a fashion forward meal, but - hey - it was delicious! Keep it.The room is suitably formal, luxurious in a traditional style, and quite comfortable. The pace of service might be a little leisurely for some (I ate alone and the four-course menu (seven + courses, including amuses, etc) pushed it a bit, stretching just over three hours. However, the friendly and attentive staff kept an eye out the entire time and stopped by if the time between courses presented the opportunity. The somm, in particular, was a great diversion, visiting from time to time to discuss the varied and interesting wines on offer. He provided useful insight into the outstanding selection of trocken Rieslings on the list. He guided me to a 2001 Burklin-Wolf GG that, at Eu 150, was both a great bottle of mature white and a tremendous value for a wine of this quality in this type of restaurant. (Good luck finding a white burgundy of this quality at this price at any multi-star restaurant - or at retail, for that matter.) He also suggested a wonderful German Pinot Noir by the glass that worked perfectly with the meat course and wasn't terribly expensive. The list is extensive, but not the tome you see at some restaurants, but don't be fooled - wine service at Haerlin is both a major plus and represents notable value in the context of multi-star restaurants.I'm not going to argue two-star vs three-star because that distinction often seems to be kind of mysterious (and tangentially related to the food), but I will say that this place certainly deserves two stars. I had just a flat-out great meal. If you can work in a visit, Haerlin should be high on your list."
