"Good homemade, simple and honest food done to perfection. The home made burger, juicy and flavourful, in a simple roll with honey and gherkin aioli was the best burger I’d had in a long time. Not piled high with other stuff , just simple, honest food. The staff were friendly and remembered us from the previous day when popped in for a drink. We were too full for dessert, plan to come back for the homemade desserts to end our break away to the area : Highly recommend."

Having stayed nearby visiting family, we chanced upon the Jack, and decided to give it a go for an early evening meal.

We had a wonderful 60th birthday lunch with friends at this restaurant. The food was outstanding and the staff was welcoming and kind. I would highly recommend stopping by for a visit.

We had an evening meal in June 2019. The pub is a traditional country pub with lots of character. It has a large garden and is close to the South Downs Way and other great places to walk.

I can’t understand some of the less positive reviews here... It is an old pub, and an old pub has old things in it. It adds to the character. If you want a gastro pub, then there are plenty in Brighton to choose from. Voir le carte

I stayed at the Jack Jill for two nights experiences two evening meals two full English breakfasts. All excellently cooked presented though the evening meal menu choices were rather too extensive. A smaller selection with a daily specials board would make choice simpler.

The bartender at this traditional pub provides friendly service, and they offer a diverse menu that is becoming increasingly rare to find. If you're looking for hearty pub food with large portions and a great selection of beer, this is the place to go. While the food may not be mind-blowing, the prices are reasonable.

Jack Jill is fairly well known within the East Sussex area though I can’t recollect any particular references to it. Anyhow after visiting a friend in their new home in Hassocks we decided to go for a late afternoon bank holiday lunch. We had passed J Js; on the way but checked the website first to see what sort of fare was on offer and it looked like a gastro pub offering Dexter beef and other tantalising goodies. Voir le carte

The setting for the jack and jill is amazing sitting at the bottom of the South Downs, but We were very disappointed after reading the reviews. The food was very nice but the pub itself is in serious need of a good clean and refurbishment. The tables were sticky and so was the carpets. There was a hole in the ceiling and all the nik-naks about the pub had dust jackets on. The place mats looked like a dog had been chewing the corners.

I visited this pub for Sunday lunch today. We’d been last year and thoroughly enjoyed the food so thought that we’d try it again. The food was absolutely perfect and the nut roast was accompanied by a wonderful array of vegetables all perfectly cooked. The staff at the pub are second to none cheerful, helpful and thoroughly professional. I wholeheartedly recommend this pub for Sunday lunch but book in advance so you won’t be disappointed

"We go to Gravetye 3 or 4 times a year if we can and have been going for many many years over the tenures of several owners. It 's always a complete joy, and the current owner has done a fabulous job of getting the right people in, both inside and out. Tom Coward, the Head Gardener (ex. Dixter) has a vision and a long term plan that make continual visits over an extended period a joy every time we visit we are surprised by the continual changes we learn so much and the garden staff are super helpful and willing to discuss what they 're up to and why. The amazing oval massive kitchen garden that supplies the hotel is a source of wonderment and not to be missed. A visual and culinary feast. We 've never stayed there as we live reasonably close, but have eaten in both the old and new dining rooms many times. The new dining room sits harmoniously between the wings of the manor and although a very modern glass and steel construction, the inclusion of a fabulous antique (and uneven) parquet floor (ex. some french chateau) softens the feel and acoustics, making the room almost intimate. The floor to ceiling windows bring you right into the garden, even in the foulest of weather it 's a triumph of design. Then there 's the food. Apart from the presentation, which is exquisite, the flavours and textures always bring a broad grin, however grumpy I am! This is absolutely first rate British cuisine; the kitchen under Head Chef George Blogg is to be commended, as are the garden staff producing the freshest of produce. I occasionally try to photograph the plates, but invariably find I 've forgotten that rather crass move and have just launched in! Must also mention the front of house staff. Perfectly presented and mannered, they know exactly the boundary between staff and guest and make you feel completely comfortable and relaxed there is nothing stuffy or obsequious about Gravetye everything is pitched just spot on and nothing is too much trouble. We were there today for a birthday treat, but will be back again soon for a post family wedding get together. Cannot recommend too highly just an excellent few hours, whatever the weather. Walkability: Lots of paths. The lower areas are easy for those with limited mobility, however it might be tricky to get up to the kitchen garden if you 're not great on your feet. Food drinks: See my review."
