"All was going well till the table next to us got kicked out. Please do not visit this establishment with anyone who has any kind of special needs. A mum and son came in and sat next to us, the son clearly had special needs and after the mum had ordered for herself, she got a sandwich out for her son. Clearly has the same thing everyday. Now I get you are running a business and rule 1 of any eatery is always not to eat food not purchased from there...but come on fella, have some dignity and common sense. Instead of asking if he wanted anything else to go with the sandwich and making him feel welcome, he took the money back to the mum told them to get out , shouted that they he can't eat that in here. Moron It's a sandwich, and a mum who clearly needed a sit down and break while her son had some food. On top of the embarrassing situation for the mum and the lad, he clearly couldn't understand why he wasn't allowed his sandwich which probably caused a meltdown for her to deal with as they got out the shop. Also food was less than mediocre. Go further up the hill not to hill house."

Lovely little cafe. Dog friendly and caters for gluten free. Had a really nice gluten free sandwhich which makes a great change to some other cafes which only might have a prepacked sugary bite to go with coffee. Friendly staff and great atmosphere. Can highly recommend.

disappointing. The taste was overly sweet and lacked the rich, luxurious flavor of authentic Italian hot chocolate. I regretted not walking out after the initial rudeness from the manager. I would not recommend this place for anyone looking for a true Italian hot chocolate experience.

We're local and went in gorgeous coffee, milkshakes and cake. The food snd drinks are good quality but the front of house staff is most dreadful. No customer service skills, no manners. Rude. The lady should open up one of those fashionable rude restautants where customers get off on being treated badly. Glad I didn't want wifi, have a wet dog or laptop. Will spend my money in one of your many competitors next time. Voir le carte

DO NOT GO HERE. Absolutely disgusting customer service. The man that spoke to us was dismissive and so rude. We were choosing where to eat in town and stood outside discussing where to go, we hadn't tried hill house before but we were met with such a horrible spiteful remark from the owner, who chose to overhear only part of our conversation and was wrongfully judgmental. He clearly has a huge ego and can afford to turn customers away so I wouldn't give them any busines.

Such a lovely little quiet, quaint cafe. Absolutely wonderful customer service. As it was my first time visiting Totnes I was unsure of where I could go for a little drink and a sit down after my tattoo appointment I’d had down the road. The man who served me was so so lovely and we had a little chit chat, I had ordered a caramel Hot chocolate and it was absolutely delightful just for when your sugar levels get a bit low, will definitely be returning when I have my next tattoo appointment next month!

Went in for a fresh crab sandwich for lunch. The woman at the front of house was rude (no smile, no nice greeting) . We had a sandwich to share after we saw the price £11.50. The bread was just from a standard loaf of brown bread (something we have on a day-to-day basis), not alot of filling in the sandwich, all in all very disappointing. Made to feel when we ordered one to share that it was not enough to sit down (tea and coffee was ordered as well). £17.80 spent in total. Not a great experience and will not be returning. Our experience at the restaurant was disappointing. The server made us feel like we were inconveniencing her, likely due to receiving bad news. She barely acknowledged us and made us feel as though we were being unreasonable for wanting to eat and drink in the cafe. It seemed like she would be better suited for a different job. The customer at the table next to us was also ignored and left before ordering. The food was comparable to a hurried meal I would make at home, costing us £24. We regret not checking reviews beforehand, as there are many other nice restaurants in the area. Overall, our experience was miserable.

I would not recommend visiting this restaurant. It is best to save your money and go elsewhere. The service was rude, particularly the man serving us. The atmosphere was uncomfortable. It is a shame because the coffee was okay. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted with strange behavior. The server sarcastically asked us to hand over dirty cups without a tray, then slammed a chair which hit my dog. When I checked on my dog, he reassured me that the dog was fine and did not apologize. Other tables around us also noticed his rude behavior and commented on it. The server walked away dismissively, saying it was just a fuss over hitting the dog with a chair. A simple apology was all that was n...

"The positive is that the food is good. But the negative is the service time and the attitude of the staff. We were seated and had our order taken after 20 minutes. A little slow but it was a busy Saturday evening so understandable. Starters came promptly and were eaten. We then got ignored by every passing member of staff for at least 50 minutes. Quite the skill! Once there was a break in our conversation and I realised how long it had been, I stood up to intercept a waitress and asked “are our mains on the way, please?” Our ticket was checked by her at the kitchen hatch and we were told “yes”. At this point our starter plates were cleared after they had sat on the table for at least 35 minutes. Our mains then took another 25 minutes to get to us, so I suspect that being told they were on their way was a lie. To be clear: we were given our mains 1hr 20 mins after placing our order. I complained to a waitress who sent over a manager. The manager asked if we’d had starters (yes, we had) and said that it was our fault our main was so late as we’d had a first course. How insulting!!! Blaming the customer for their bad service. Disgusting. When I said it was still far too long to wait between courses she then changed tack and said the kitchen was “really really busy” well, they weren’t busy cooking our food now were they?! And despite the place being full when we arrived, by this point of the night over half the tables were empty. There were 3 tickets on the pass along with ours and tables were 2 4 people (no large groups) so I feel that was also another lie to get out of it. What a shocking way to treat customers! My advice to you is: if you want your food served in a timely manner, either take the advice of the manager and don’t order a starter, or, be sure to communicate with waitstaff once your first course is finished and ask for your main to be cooked and served promptly. (Note: food also sat under the heat lamps for long lengths of time as staff stood socialising with one another behind the bar rather than serve customers) I hope this advice is of use as I would have appreciated it ahead of my visit! Good luck. [Reading other reviews, ours is not the only experience of slow service and seeing staff chat to one another rather than deal with the customers paying their wages.
