"Cannot recommend this pub highly enough. Not only is the food exceptional and the ale is great; They manage to create an atmosphere that is both very much a real, heart of the community pub for locals, whilst welcoming guests and passers by. We have young kids and they are always made so welcome. Last night in addition to the fabulous provision of good kiddie meals/cutlery/etc, the kids were even given a busy box to play with whilst we enjoyed our lovely time there. It had puzzles, games, colouring. They were so happy. If you are looking for a sunny drink in the garden, it’s a gorgeous spot. Or a place to go for a roast with your Gran, we’ve never been disappointed. Maybe it’s rainy on Dartmoor….we’ve played many a board game by the fire. The food is always of a very high standard and the menu is ever changing so it’s also perfect for a classy date night. You might wonder why I write such a gushy review. It’s because this pub is really special. It’s the heart of our community and people visiting it will keep it alive, fantastic and thriving for years to come. I tell all my friends about it…so I thought I’d tell the strangers on the internet too."

Really nice pub. Full of character. Pork for starter and homemade beef pie. Food was ok. Service friendly. Would go back again but needs to have specials and more variety.

Exceptional food, mushroom ravioli and butternut squash curry were the best meals we've had for a while. Delicious! Staff were lovely and the pub atmosphere was perfect, good ales on offer. We sat in the dining room which was a beautiful oak extension. A lovely dining experience, thank you

We had a really tasty meal in lovely sunny dining room. Service was relaxed but so friendly and helpful. The activity boxes for the children were absolutely brilliant and kept both four and eight year old happy the whole meal. Puddings were delicious especially the mango crème brûlée. Kids’ menu is reasonable and food great quality.

This restaurant is housed in a lovely historic building with a warm and friendly staff. The food was outstanding and we had a perfect lunch. It's rare to find such high-quality food in local pubs, but our ploughman's and scallop chorizo chowder were delicious. We highly recommend a visit and we will definitely be returning. Thank you for a wonderful lunch experience. Voir le carte

We sat in the ‘old’ part of the pub which is traditional but extremely well kept. I was very pleased with my food. A lovely starter of mushroom rarebit and a delicious main of duck breast which was perfectly cooked. The only disappointment was one of the party, who had asked for steak and ale pie, was instead brought a chicken and mushroom pie. However, still a pub I would wholeheartedly recommend to anyone passing by.

I stopped by this restaurant for a meal while camping in Ashbourne Woods. They offered a great variety of drinks, including local beer and cider. The atmosphere inside the pub was very pleasant, the staff was welcoming and friendly, and the food was delicious. I ordered the portobello mushroom rarebit and fish and chips, while my friend had the venison sausage. Both dishes were flavorful and reasonably priced. I would definitely recommend this restaurant.

We were staying at a small caravan site nearby and his pub was recommended by the owner. It was an excellent recommendation and we enjoyed a very good lunch on a warm September day in the garden. We had a shared starter (calamari) followed by fish and and chips and also an unusual Indian spiced roast cauliflower. All the food was good, the cauliflower dish truly excellent. With one ice cream dessert and one coffee, glasses of wine and one soft drink, the bill came to Voir le carte

Immediate friendly welcome. Traditional country pub with an additional airy light filled oak framed dining room extension. Choice of either, so chose the dining room. Drinks arrived quickly and a little longer a wait for mains and dessert. Popular and busy at lunchtime so probably the reason, however, so worth it. Food was delicious. Portion sizes adequate however if you like more mashed potatoes or chips/ roast potatoes possibly be wise to order additional sides. More than adequate for lunchtime, especially as we couldn’t resist dessert! The lunch menu advertised on their website isn’t the current one but from the month of May. In fact we preferred what was on today’s menu!! 2 courses mains...

We called ahead to make sure we could get a table on short notice as we were driving back from the west country on Saturday, and what a great find this restaurant was. The Skate Wings with Samphire were a standout dish, as well as the Ploughman's with pickled Quail eggs. The Truffle Parmesan Chips and Halloumi fries were also delicious. The quality of the cooking was evident and we could see the other dishes coming out of the kitchen looked just as amazing. Although not cheap, the price point was reasonable considering the skill and quality of the food. Our daughter found the Cheesy penne pasta a little bland, but that may just be how most children prefer it. If you have a child under 12 ord...

"The positive is that the food is good. But the negative is the service time and the attitude of the staff. We were seated and had our order taken after 20 minutes. A little slow but it was a busy Saturday evening so understandable. Starters came promptly and were eaten. We then got ignored by every passing member of staff for at least 50 minutes. Quite the skill! Once there was a break in our conversation and I realised how long it had been, I stood up to intercept a waitress and asked “are our mains on the way, please?” Our ticket was checked by her at the kitchen hatch and we were told “yes”. At this point our starter plates were cleared after they had sat on the table for at least 35 minutes. Our mains then took another 25 minutes to get to us, so I suspect that being told they were on their way was a lie. To be clear: we were given our mains 1hr 20 mins after placing our order. I complained to a waitress who sent over a manager. The manager asked if we’d had starters (yes, we had) and said that it was our fault our main was so late as we’d had a first course. How insulting!!! Blaming the customer for their bad service. Disgusting. When I said it was still far too long to wait between courses she then changed tack and said the kitchen was “really really busy” well, they weren’t busy cooking our food now were they?! And despite the place being full when we arrived, by this point of the night over half the tables were empty. There were 3 tickets on the pass along with ours and tables were 2 4 people (no large groups) so I feel that was also another lie to get out of it. What a shocking way to treat customers! My advice to you is: if you want your food served in a timely manner, either take the advice of the manager and don’t order a starter, or, be sure to communicate with waitstaff once your first course is finished and ask for your main to be cooked and served promptly. (Note: food also sat under the heat lamps for long lengths of time as staff stood socialising with one another behind the bar rather than serve customers) I hope this advice is of use as I would have appreciated it ahead of my visit! Good luck. [Reading other reviews, ours is not the only experience of slow service and seeing staff chat to one another rather than deal with the customers paying their wages.
