"Had never been to Essen before so relied upon Tripadvisor for guidance on where to eat. Wanted something within walking distance of the hotel but also something tasty. Found the banana leaf restaurant, which ticked both boxes and also had a high rating in terms...of reviews. It was Thai Malaysian cuisine and we found it quite easily thanks to the AI god that is google maps. Although it was a dark and damp Wednesday evening in this fairly large German town, it was quite clear that this place was popular due to the fact it was almost full when we arrived. We were ushered to a table in the corner and then presented with the menus. I opted for the chicken satay to start followed by the spicy beef with fried rice and vegetables. Dishes were really well prepared and were presented on large green ceramic banana leaf plates as per the name of the place. Nice plates and good sized tasty portions. Staff were also very pleasant in terms of welcome and service. Also very good value at just under per person for starter, main meal drinks. Certainly recommend this place if you are in the vicinity and fancy an authentic spicy meal."

We passed by this place on a rainy day looking for a restaurant. The place serves authentic Thai dishes for a great price.

Amazing and cheap ! The place to stop and eat in Essen, in the very center. To stop at any time. Very tasty and nice people, too.

i'm surprised that the food is just delicious. they have somehow mixing style cooking between malaysian-thailand cuisine, since the chef basically lived in those two places. worth to try :)

The food is good. Big portions and it is not expensive. The design of the restaurant is very ugly. Old and ugly collors like the most German restaurants. It is middle of the city and the staff is kind. Voir le carte

We came here for dinner while visiting Spiele Essen. The food was delicious and importantly for us easy to order with the numbered menu! The staff were very friendly and encoruagin of our attempts at speaking German.

It's a bit tucked away, but worth the trip, offering delicious food and friendly, polite service. People who have no German may struggle a little, but the staff try very hard to work around it and let's be honest, you're in Germany, make an effort!

We came here on the recommendation of some colleagues. I'm not a great fan of curry and coconut milk dishes so for me it was OK. On the other hand, others in our party really enjoyed their meals. the staff was very friendly and attentive so overall a nice meal. Voir le carte

Just like I said, happy full tummy. Happy which mean the food is tasty and good. Full means their portion is big enough to satisfy my craving tummy. They have a lot of variant of food to choose. I ended up ordering what I was...able to eat. Because everything looks yummy and makes me frel like I can eat everything . Its worth every penny!!!
