"My three friends and I found this pub in the centre of little Dunmow after attending the Little Easton car show on Sunday 10th September – we agreed we thought it looked pleasant from the outside as well as the inside. Once seated we did wonder why such a centralized and attractive looking establishment was not bustling and maxxed out seating wise. However, we were about to realise why it was not busy… Three of us ordered the chicken liver pate, with onion jam and crostini and our other friend ordered the prawn cocktail. The latter was fine, however, once we received the pate we were quite shocked to see the proportion of the pate vs the crostini but more shockingly our onion jam was not with the order. We approached the waitress about this and the response was ‘we’ll see what we can do’ – this gave the impression of either, they don’t know what was on the menu or it hadn’t been changed due to lack of onion jam. However a few minutes later the jam was with us and we got on with our starter. The pate was a bit creamy and lacked the taste of chicken but there was too much of it to be used on the crostini supplied, so a bit of a waste from a cost point of view. No complaints about the prawn cocktail. Next main: three fish chips and one burger ordered. When the fish chips came over, it looked fine from appearances. However, once we cut in, the batter was VERY thick and there was an uncooked yellow substance between the fish and the cooked batter. We think as the batter was so thick, the yellow substance was indeed uncooked batter, due to the thickness above and the heat from the oil could not penetrate this level. The fish was mushy like it had additional water, probably from the uncooked yellow substance and the fish had no taste. The pea puree that came with it was nicely done, but once again lacked flavour. The tomato ketchup slid off the chips, like it had been diluted down whereas vs known brands it has the same viscosity as mayonnaise. The worst part of the meal was my friend’s tartare sauce that had what we described as a ‘wizard pubic hair’ in it – it was disgusting! Clearly no one checked anything that left the kitchen. The whole experience was bad, the waiting staff took ages to come over for the cheque to be paid, even though the dining room was not busy. We didn’t complain because we didn’t want to make a scene, not that anyone was going to witness it. I’m sure the staff there do their best, but also to see 4-5 people standing around doing nothing it doesn’t look great. I can say hand on heart, that’s not only the worst fish and chips I’ve ever eaten; it’s the worst meal I’ve ever eaten. Also, it is not pub etiquette to allow guests to walk in and out with no top on. They clearly could see this happening, however, I’m guessing from the appearance and quality of the person(s) not wearing any upper clothing that they were indeed their only customers who continually come back to the business. I did feel unwell throughout the remainder of my day which I’m assuming is from this meal as I didn’t eat anything else. Bad food, bad service and a pubic hair in a sauce, not a good place to attend If I could give this zero I would have done."

"This place was always excellent before Covid arrived. Now, as cafés and restaurants open up carefully, this café is still not allowing customers inside. Even with necessary social distancing, there is sufficient room for 6 tables with 4 chairs at each. We sat outside on the ample lawn on a beautiful summers morning. However, as the weather closes in, they will need to allow customers in. They also, like most other restaurants, have a reduced menu. I understand that as there are usually items on the menu that don’t sell well and end up being thrown away. What I can’t understand is how the ‘All day breakfast’ can not be included as at most cafés, this is one of the most popular dishes. I was able to order eggs, bacon and beans on toast in a takeaway container with plastic knife and fork which no matter how you look at it, is not the same as a full breakfast including sausages, tomatoes, mushrooms etc on a real plate with metal knives and forks. I fully understand they are trying to be careful and for that I am most grateful. I returned my used tray that was not soiled in any way, and still the girl was straight onto sanitising it so full marks there. As always, the staff were polite and very friendly and the food was good. What I can’t understand is how other restaurants are opening with normal cutlery and crockery, how this café feels the need to be different. If the management do read these reviews, my suggestion is, don’t shoot yourselves in the foot. Your staff are clearly very careful to maintain high hygiene levels and like me, I’m sure people would trust you. Open the café fully as soon as possible, installing the necessary covers to maintain social distancing. I hope to be back really soon."

"How on earth this restaurant acquired 5 stars is utterly beyond me. It doesn 't deserve one star. I looked at the menu and the reviews and booked. As it was Valentine 's night there was a set menu. 3 options on each course. This was not stated on the website. We were greeted when we arrived and were served drinks. There was no ambience whatsoever. A rose/carnation on the table or a glass of champagne/prosecco on arrival might have been an idea.... I would have chosen the crab and salmon ravioli. However we were told than ten minutes prior to our arrival the chef had 'dropped the whole tray of ravioli on the floor '. So the ravioli was off. We then chose the pate. We were given one piece of toast Main course was dreadful. My salmon was lukewarm. Very small portion too. My guest chose steak but was not asked how he wanted it cooked. It arrived very rare so it was sent back. It was cooked a bit more and returned to the table. It was very very tough. By this time I had finished my main course and my drink. I was not asked whether I would like another. After quite a while, we had to ask. The cheese board was mediocre to say the least. The restaurant was cold and uninviting. Rather sad as it is a lovely building with great potential. Why they only had three options on the menu is beyond me. It was not even busy! The owner was in jeans and a cowboy shirt.... there was no attempt to make this night special in any way. We were told that two staff had called in sick. Poor excuse. This restaurant has been open for exactly three years. It should have made its mark by now. The owner did make a reduction to our bill. However the evening was ruined and I came home feeling hungry. I think the owner is in the wrong job. Just a final comment.... having read the glowing reviews of this place before I booked I suspect the owner has a lot of friends! Such a pity."
