"Visited Baldersons today, family of 5 with all children under 10. At first glance, it appears a welcoming and tranquil spot. Also dog friendly around the back on the decked area. So thumbs up so far. However....upon ordering at the till alongside my order of £55 I asked for 3 glasses of tap water, I did see a little rule they put on the menu stating tap water would only be given after purchasing a drink. So, one would assume that after spending £55 on both food and drinks, I would be allowed 3 tap waters. How wrong was I! The lady serving, after taking my payment, said she wouldn't provide the water as they only gave it once they had seen you finish your previous drink. Weird! After asking for a refund for the meal, she did eventually provide the tap water. I did stay as my children were setlled and hungry however, over all this silly rule and how i was initially spoken to regarding tap water spoiled the meal and our time at Baldersons. I was ready to leave before I had begun. Had I not had to fight for something basic like tap water would have stayed and had desserts alongside milkshakes for the kids which they were looking forward to after there meal. However I refuse to give a company/ business more money when they dont/ won't pro ide the basics. Reading the reviews and hearing other people ask for water while I was there seems I'm not the first and certai ly not the last customer who feels this is an extremely unessasary rule when you are having a meal. Personally, I won't be recommending this establishment to any friends/ family or anyone who visits/ asks for recommendations on where to go when visiting Thornton le Dale. There are plenty of other small independent delis and tea rooms who are more welcoming then Baldersons."

"We arrived and walked into the pub.. there wasn't any sort of reception area.. the lady serving showed us our room. The room smelt damp.we went out for dinner said we would be back 10ish pm, we got back at 10.08pm. It was raining. We tried to get in everywhere was locked up.. we were getting wet and cold, we honked the car horn and rang the door bell.. nothing, so we phoned the property. No one answered it went to an answer machine,we sat back in the car , we were soaked and stuck outside..no way to get in.. Eventually a man walked from the bottom field and asked if we were the residents stuck outside? Apparently his manager had rang him to go have a look, he made it clear to us that he wasn't suppose to be working till Monday but he has had to come up to let us in... he let us in and locked up and off he went. My brother realised then he had left his phone in the car so went to get it but we were locked in. The fact that we were now locked in was very concerning as to fire and safety regulations, hoe would you get out in the situation.. but anyway atleast we were indoors and vould go to bed albeit that the room smelt so strongly of damp, but we had no choice, we were out in the middle of nowhere , which we thought would be a nice place to stay, but unfortunately not.... we had 3 flights of stairs to our room..a damp room, and no access after 10pm although we had said what time we were returning..we would have eaten there if the meals had been reasonably priced. Really not the best place to stay.."

"What has happened to the courtyard cafe? For some time now the service has been non existent. It has become so bad that even though we are members, we have stopped going. On our last visit, we stood at the entrance whilst being ignored. Finally we were given a table and a menu and order taken. Our meal arrived and basically that was it. There was absolutely no interaction with us after that. We finished our food and waited for someone to clear our plates and ask if we would like dessert. After 30 minutes still no-one had approached our table. I looked around and several tables were in exactly the same position. There were plenty of staff but they are either chatting at the coffee machine or delivering a meal and then walking passed all the tables to get back to the coffee machine! One elderly couple asked twice for the dessert menu. Other tables next to us stacked their plates and pushed them to the edge of the table to get attention. Finally, we got up and went to pay and leave, feeling completely ignored. No-one was at the cash till. We waited and finally someone came. I explained that we would have like a dessert but no-one had come. The couple behind us who had also given up waiting said they had ordered a dessert but it never turned up. The service has been like this for a few months now and is getting worse. We shall not be renewing our membership but then will anyone at Castle Howard even notice?"

"We stumbled on this cafe after walking from a nearby campsite. There was a big flashing ‘open’ sign in the window and it looked welcoming on first impression. We sat down and my husband went to the counter to order and pay for drinks and lunch. Our drinks were brought out first, minus my sons bottled drink. Didn’t think much of it and assumed the waitress would be back, so waited. When the food arrived, again there was no drink for my son, and when we enquired as to where it was we were told ‘we had left it on the counter’ thought this was a little odd and rather rude (obviously my husband did not notice this when he ordered). The waitress knowing this could easily have brought it with our drinks, but not wanting to make a fuss, my husband collected the drink from the counter himself. Then it came to almost 2pm and the waitress puts the ‘closed’ sign on the door. I notice this and say ‘oh they must be closing’ and try to hurry my son up who was still eating. A few minutes later, the waitress walks back into the room and turns off the light and removes our plates before my son had finished. We weren’t the only customers at this point and the whole atmosphere of the place was just weird. There was no obvious sign they were closing at 2 (we’d have chosen somewhere else if so, as hate to feel hurried) and if they were that adamant about closing on the dot they should have informed us when we ordered at about 1:35. Lunches aren’t served until 12:30, so it’s odd to close so soon after. Definitely would not recommend and would not return. Maybe locals are treated better, but if you’re not from around here I’d avoid. Dreadful, unfriendly and downright rude staff."

"We made the mistake to invite two friends to hit the head that was bought on the " Fleisch Platter-Meal for four " Deal by Groupon. We needed a while to find the way to the place where we were greeted... by a cried lady behind the bar who didn't know what to do with our voucher I'm just visiting a friend she said. The lady owner appeared soon, showed us on our table and served us our complementary (purchased as part of the voucher) half pint drinks. It was very quiet and there was something missing... an atmosphere. We introduced ourselves a German beer cellar... bakery, jolly religious evening... this place was lifeless, entertaining, there were four other people drinking pale beer, but no one else has eaten!! We should have read the signs!! Then the oval silver plate with 8 thin pale German sausages came on it and two small DRY DRY DRY baked chicken breast!!!! We were laughed, or was it hysteria. We had to pick up the little chicken breast in two.... how so dry no one wanted her.... two small chicken breast between four of us......so unnecessary!!! Another silver plate came as we part through the first, this was stacked high with chips...frozen chips we think.... no taste at all. Terrible presentation, so inconspicuous and dry!!! I think they tried to make it look abundant on large plates, but with so little food on offer it looked pitiful. NOW in Groupon advert BBQ House advertised a meat plater loaded with pork chops, loads of different sausages, chicken and a variety of other meats.... they even mentioned how good their carving was....No, what we were given. They claimed it was a £70 for four! What a joke! We could only laugh how horrible and strange the place was. It seemed to be a meeting place for the whole family and all their smoking friends who actually (as other reviews claimed) spend most of the night in and out and out of the door .... Smoking and run huge dogs through the restaurant. You can only suspect that they have no back doorstep!. Our BBQ home experience was really bad our friend is a cook made when even more embarrassing. I guess you could argue that you don't pay for anything, half the amount will get half the quality and quantity. However, this was not our experience that we had some brilliant meals and offers with our Groupon Vouchers. The best deals were where the restaurant understands marketing and the groupon sales used to get people into their premises and then allows the vouchers to have a meal of your choice on their menu with the possibility to cover top when the bill exceeds the voucher value. In this way, they present their food and think of customers while raising new customers hopefully again and again. And so we bring friends and family. Such a shame! We'll never come back again, we should have complained, but the evening was bad enough without inserting a series into the procedure... we just agree with our feet and write a review! The evening cost us £8 per head for 2 thin sausages, terrible chips with half a warehouse. Our friends are still talking to us....but if you appreciate your friends and love German food surely NOT to eat in The BBQ House Malton....Scratch this one OFF YOUR LIST!!!"

"My Wife and I ate here for a Saturday (Easter evening meal in addition to 2 breakfasts while we stayed for 2 nights. As with the rest of our stay, a real highlight is the friendly and attentive service we experienced. Despite being extremely busy,...all the staff could not do enough and tried to provide a personalised experience catering to different needs, asking how your course was but also sharing their opinions too. We had the bread and olives sharer to start. It was made clear to us that the advertised bread had sold out and what the alternative was, which was great. Our mains were the Scampi and Bacon Steaks. Both of us received good portions and were really impressed by the quality of the food overall. When it came to the deserts, I had the Lemon Mess which was absolutely incredible (a favourite of the waiters too he seemed genuinely keen and interested to see what I thought! and my wife had the Chocolate Brownie. She was hesitant to ask as it is quite a 'posh ' restaurant compared to what we would normally eat at, but when she asked if her desert could be taken back to the room, they seemed offended that she even hesitated to ask. As with the rest of our experience, it was not too much trouble and easily managed. This is clearly a restaurant that prioritises quality over quantity, so pragmatically speaking it might not suit fussy eaters as there isn 't a massive menu. With that said, it 's popular with families and children seem well catered for so I 'm confident that dietary needs and fussy eaters could be accommodated with a conversation with the waiting staff. We have said that should we be in the region again, we would make a point of stopping by for at least a drink as our whole stay was wonderful and we 'll hold very fond memories of a great Easter Weekend."
