"I have not eaten in Barkers for some time and since my daughter was visiting I thought I would treat her and my wife to lunch yesterday . This proved to be a massive disappointment. Firstly it was extremely busy which is not a problem however you need sufficient staff to cope with it, you also need staff who know what they are doing and who provide a service which is up to the expected standards. Both my wife and daughter had soup and were aghast firstly because it was going to be served into a dirty bowls, fortunately my wife brought it to the attention of the server but to add insult to injury it was unceremoniously slopped into their new soup bowls and into the saucers!Next I selected a round of prepared ham sandwiches which looked good and then queued for a freshly made Americano Coffee and a Cappuccino (both regular) next it was off to the cashier to be robbed of £17! At least Dick Turpin wore a mask!!!It was now time to tuck into our fare, hungry and expecting quality........oops disappointed we all were; the soup was bland and tasteless, my ham sandwiches were extremely salty and the accompanying salad garnish was dry and stale, the mayonnaise sachets I got were not of a high Brand type and tasted disgusting. Finally I thought I would be saved with my coffee, freshly made, but...... weak, tasteless liquid I was subjected to!!!! At this point I had lost all my respect for the Barkers Brand and we got up and left. One other point is that the restaurant stunk of fish, not a little bit it reeked of it, no matter where you sat you could not get away from it and when we left our clothes stunk of it!Now the question will be asked....did we complain at the time....the answer is no....why not? I had lost the will to live and I could not bear the overpowering smell of fish it made me wretch! Please don’t shoot me down if you look at my review history you will see that I am extremely fare and complimentary where appropriate, but Barkers you really need to up your game!"

"The Jolly has had a mixed history, not all good, but the current landlord is really trying to make a go of it. It retains the aura of a village pub, dark beams, rough walls and small rooms, the bar and a small restaurant area. We visited on a weekday evening, two couples, looking for good food and a swift pint or two with wine for the ladies. Entering the fairly busy bar we found a table, enquired about food and bought a round of drinks. The ladies had red, it came as small bottles of Javk Rabbit, no proper bottles yet, I suppose they're get measure of their customers needs, a pint of Fosters and one of John Smith's.. they had a guest ale Timmy Taylor's, but it was the fruity one, not my taste. Food ordered, into the restaurant area, 6 tables for 4, starters of battered prawns, very nice. Onto mains, ladies on the really nice Steak and Ale pies, gents a burger with bacon and cheese, and first and chips. The chips were proper home made one triple cooked), the pies were individual made to a recipe Jamie the chef has used for years ...don't change it mate, it's perfect. The burger again hand made no bought in frozen junk here), the fish fried to perfection. Everyone was very happy with their meals... did I say the burger came in a proper bun/roll/bap none of that sweet brioche rubbish! Into the beer garden to allow food to settle there's a servicing hatch/bar there too), for another couple of reds and a lager, lime and soda for me...designated driver. In conclusion, food great, service great, surroundings a work in progress ...but its early days, we wish them well and will be back for another of Jamie's meals."

"This is a Sam Smiths pub and my husband is a regular here on a Friday night. As its Sam Smiths the beer is cheap. Not for the bottle organic stuff that I like though but it is lovely. This has had a few landlords over the last few years and hopefully this new couple will stay. They are trying different things and we are happy to support them. They started serving food from Wednesday this week and are doing food from 5 pm in the evenings but also lunch over the week ends. There is a limited Sunday lunch menu but there are three course on offer. Today it was wild mushroom soup with croutons which my husband had and said it was very good. This came with a large piece of brown bread and butter. Other starters included prawns in a Marie Rose Sauce. Mains were beef which came with Yorkshire pudding, gravy, cabbage roast potatoes, mashed potatoes, carrots and cabbage. Horseradish and mustard were also on offer. I opted for the sweet potato, chick pea and spinach curry with boiled rice (or chips), which was really good. I could have also had a Naan bread. Dessert was from the main menu and was an brownie with ice cream, apple and blackberry crumble and sticky toffee pudding custard or ice cream was on offer. The food was very tasty with good portion sizes. The locals who are difficult to please all said it was lovely too! The menu is typically pub food but it is good quality. The standard menu consists of the usual gammon steak, curry, pies, burgers, etc."
