"My husband and I walked from our campsite at Troutbeck to this restaurant on a Sunday. We had made a reservation for Sunday lunch, but unfortunately they were not serving it that day. However, we were pleasantly surprised by the delicious food we were served. I had the chicken and mushroom pie with vegetables and new potatoes, which was absolutely delicious. The pie was full of flavor, with the option for extra gravy if desired. It was a generous portion and despite thinking I wouldn't be able to finish it, I managed to eat the whole thing because it was one of the best pies I have ever had. The pastry was a perfect short crust and the pie was filled to the brim, not just a topping. My husband enjoyed his beef stew and potatoes as well, and the fresh, well-cooked vegetables complemented the meal perfectly. Everything is cooked on site and we washed our meals down with a pint of lager and a pint of beer. To finish off our meal, we shared a delicious pavlova. Thank you to the staff for preparing and serving such wonderful food. Based on our dining experience, we highly recommend this restaurant."

"Four of us visited on a Friday evening having booked, which I recommend as the restaurant was very busy. Having been shown to our table and our drinks order taken we perused the menu. When it came to taking our food order, we had a couple of people with allergies and our waitress was a pain to ensure there would be no issues by checking direct with the kitchen and advising us what was “off limits”. We opted to forgo starters and go straight to main courses. When the food arrived it was well presented, served piping hot and was certainly very tasty as revealed by the clean plates returned to the kitchen. After a short rest we were all able to indulge in one of the great deserts on offer. All the staff were really friendly and helpful and we will certainly be back when again in the area."

"After a long day of trekking, this place lived up to its name! It was quite crowded around the main building and we did not have a reservation. The good news is that there is seating outside and we could get in the section partially closed to the wind. I love this place, but they needed to turn those heaters on today. I recommend looking at the menu before heading to the bar. You can order your drinks and food at the same time, as long as you can tell them generally where you are sitting. “Outside” was enough for our location. They found us. It’s well made pub food and really hits the spot. The local cider and lager were great accompaniments. We will certainly be back every time we are in Glenridding."

"Young chap with blonde hair (don't know his name) behind the bar was very nice. We went 2 nights in succession, once in the restaurant, once in the bar area. Food was delicious and beautifully presented. There was a tv which was thankfully off and background music which was just that, so good for us. It was tastefully decoated and furnished. Overall ambience of upmarket and quality. The weather was abominable and we went at night so can't comment on the outside. We didn't use the toilets. We would certainly return."

"Visited last weekend and from the get go the service was horrendous, we were staying in a cottage within a 2 minute walk (if that so had the service been better we would of probably frequented the pub quite a lot! Walked in to the...pub for all bar staff to suddenly disappear, when there was finally someone we could talk to we asked if they had a table available for 5 people to be told I don't think so' with an extremely empty restaurant at 6 on a Saturday evening maybe we should have just walked out then and there! The Bar man then came back said yes we do have a table free' marched us through an empty restaurant into an entirely different room on our own. We were then told go back and order drinks at the bar and someone will come and take our food order. Starters were average at best, and one of them was forgotten you could hear the shouting in the kitchen when the waiter went back in and told them! Quite a while after ordering both starters and mains the waiter sheepishly came back and said we cant do 3x double cheeseburgers as we only have 3 burger patties left, so my husband had a double cheeseburger, his teenage brother had a single burger and my father-in-law chose a different option. No one particularly enjoyed their food, the prawn curry that was meant to be a special was awful and has used the cheapest of the cheap frozen prawns, the poppadoms that accompanied the prawn curries were swimming in oil and slipped out of your hands almost! Now onto the drinks! Its a shame as its a nice looking pub, although it did feel like it was a locals pub and we were not welcome."

"Stayed overnight at the H and F in their dog friendly accommodation 'The Salutation Inn ' across the road from the pub hotel. Dog friendly room was spacious with bowls and bed area for the dog and large double bed with large plasma tv for our comfort. Tea and coffee facilities including biscuits. Room was very clean and neatly furnished. Dinner and breakfast across the road at the Horse and farrier pub had facility to include your dog on non carpeted dining area and staff were welcoming and professional. Food was excellent nd service very efficient . Would definitley recommend this to others- perfect for walkers, close to Keswick and you can take your dog."

"I enjoyed my dining experience at this restaurant! The cheerful young ladies serving were very efficient. The food selection was good and delicious. Although the number of tables was limited, they kindly asked those who were turned away to return in about 15 minutes. We thought this was a nice touch. I tried to come back for a second meal yesterday, but unfortunately they were closed for the day. I guess even in this day and age, staff still need time off occasionally! The only downside was that the coffee was overpriced and they only accepted cash. Otherwise, I would have given them a 5-star rating."

"We revisited Gianni's this evening and it is safe to say we were let down. We went with the plan to have a pleasant evening and had booked a table at 6.15. Upon our arrival, we were seated and our drink order was taken quickly....The food wasn't bad medicore at best, however that was not our issue. The starter arrived promptly, but was taken away the second the last piece was removed from the plate not a bite had been taken yet. Throughout the whole meal, we felt we were being expected to leave as soon as possible. Every few minutes, we were looked upon to see if they could whisk away our plates yet. We were even told multiple times to stop talking' as we were there to enjoy the food and atmosphere'. Let's just say the only good thing about the meal was each others company which we weren't even allowed to enjoy..."

"First time in Penrith and I couldn't make a better choice for a pub dinner. Friendly atmosphere, price/size ratio is superb, good selection of international beers. The bartender and waiting team are friendly and very quick with the service. As you'll see from the photos, the portions are big and plenty, a bountiful amount of food. Taste and quality seem to be at home for this chef. I like the interior particularly, some interesting mix of modern and old flooring and lighting. By far, if you come to Penrith this is a must."

"we visited here in July but when we were in the area again in October made sure I made a booking here. So glad made a booking as they had no room for walk ins. It is the best italian restaurant I have been to. Service, food and atmosphere excellent. From what I could gather there were a lot of locals eating here so that is a really good sign. I had pasta dishes both times I visited and were both absolutely delicious only a few ingredients but proves you don't need loads of ingredients for a dish to be perfect. Other half had the lamb dish both times as he said it was so delicious. Its a shame we stay so far away as i would be eating in here all the time"

"We had a fantastic experience at the Crown when the local football team won the league. We visited from a nearby caravan site and although we are not football fans, we found the players to be very amusing. The owner, who always greets us warmly, apologized for the noise and seated us in a quieter area to eat. Other locals checked in to make sure we were not bothered by the celebrations, but we were actually quite entertained by the cheerful group of players. The food was delicious as usual and we felt fully included in the festivities. This is exactly what a village pub should be like."

"The Fitzgerald concert was wonderful. It's great to have such a stimulating venue so close to Penrith with a mix of puppetry, drama, exhibitions and a whole range of live music. Always a great evening out. Always interesting crafts on sale and excellent coffee, lovely restaurant with mostly vegetarian dishes, including sticky toffee pudding and my personal favourite potato, leek and watercress soup!"

"Having got married at Gretna Green at 11:30, our extremely casually convened wedding arrangements led us here. We had no plan whatsoever; other than to “elope”, or as far as one can do so these days, with four friends to act as witnesses, and go...to Gretna to get married. Having tied the knot, we found ourselves heading home to Teesside, realising that anywhere we could head to to have a meal together was looking unlikely on account of lunchtime service finishing at 2pm. Plans changed. On the motorway. And we’re so glad they did. Upon arrival, dressed in our wedding finery (I guess that most groups of people don’t arrive at the Sun Inn dressed in bow ties, Tweed Suits, some glamour, a kilt and Laboutain heels — the ideal hiking and outdoor pursuits wear) when asked if we were going somewhere nice, we confessed to having got married an hour previously and just fancied some lovely grub and a table for 6. The staff genuinely threw out the red carpet for us. Utterly unprompted. Even when we advised that we didn’t want any fuss. Within 10 minutes a table for six had been prepared with table dressings and fresh flowers and we were ushered through to the dining room. We were all stumped for choice with a lovely menu to choose from; and were probably being a bit greedy in making our choices but, when in “holiday mode” and with a lovely and diverse range of choices to make, we went for staters and mains. All dietary requirements accommodated for where do you start? A coeliac, two vegetarians (one of which is lactose intolerant), the table from hell! But accommodate us they did. And in style. Only one minor hiccup being which a breadbun that wasn’t gluten free but issue resolved. The food was delicious, our travelling companion and curry aficionado deeply impressed with the prawn curry in particular. Just a lovely, lovely experience topped off by one of the regulars in the main bar sending through some wedding favours as a wee gift for us all. Cannot thank the lovely people at the Sun Inn enough for their kindness and hospitality. Made our day completely and yes, we will be making a return trip on “Star Wars Day” (May the Fourth) next year for our first anniversary. Just lovely. In the nicest and best possible way. Thank you all so so much. You made our day."

"a wonderful surprise for 2 extras. the personal could not be more helpful or friendly and was happy to help with any question. to the point where we needed a little more milk for a third cup of coffee in our room, the employee insisted that they bring it up into our room, even if we moved up there. they can wait for their meals as they are cooked in the house and freshly prepared and order so that a little longer to serve. sit back, relax and enjoy the small waiting time (cook/time) over a drink. the meals are generous in the size and wondeful rustic fare. the puddings are very popular and it was interesting to note that they have a monthly 'pudding night'. this sells in advance so that a testament itself. the room in which we stayed was immaculate and well equipped and the bed was very comfortable. the breakfast has certainly put us in good position for the rest of our day. cooked again to order a little time for delivery to their table. enjoy a coffee/tea, juice and/or sweet while waiting. the croissants baked in the house served perfection directly from the often and steam (yes, they 're advised, they 'll take about 13 minutes.) a favorable location to explore the opposite, near some good hiking trails or perfect for a overnight stay when they pass through (like our situation.) thanks to all. we hope to return a day."

"I recently visited a fantastic restaurant adorned with automobile decor. I enjoyed a pleasant early dinner in the lovely garden. The menu had a limited but satisfactory selection, even for vegetarians like myself. The staff was accommodating when I asked to switch out some of the side dishes. I started with delicious homemade onion rings, followed by a mushroom and leek pie that was also made on the premises. The minted mushy peas and herbed mashed potatoes were excellent. Overall, the pub food was top-notch and reasonably priced. I highly recommend this place for a great meal."

"Hmm, this cafe is somewhat of a disappoinment. On the face of it it should be excellent, home cooked food, clean and on the market place in Alston. They do vegetarian pies which the wife enjoyed. Literally that is what you get, the pie, no garnish, no little dollop of coleslaw, a pie on a plate. I had the Cumberland sausage and egg pie which i have to say was bland, also i really don't like how all the produce is in the window, some uncovered with people peering over it."
