"Visiting from The States for my cousin’s wedding (and surprising the rest of the relatives), we came to Zum Beichstuhl (the “confessional” in English) for what would be a rehearsal dinner in the USA. This restaurant was perfect on all counts. The physical restaurant itself is charming, the service was amazing (my husband doesn’t speak German so all the staff was quick to assist), and the food was wunderschoen. I am probably the world’s greatest aficionada of “Hand Kase mit Musik” and this version was the best I’ve had in decades. The cheese was tender, the onions were sweet, and the bread had no equal. Many of us went with the other recommended menu items and they did not disappoint. The Schnitzel “Wiener Art” with potatoes was beyond delicious. Accompanying this was a complimentary “kleinen gemischten Salat” ... they lied in the “confessional" ... the salad was huge! We also went with the wine of the month, a 2012 Kreuznacher Kronenberg Spaetlese Chardonnay -- we happily drank four bottles. We were all so stuffed that nobody had dessert, which is probably a shame since everything else was so delicious. Again, we were surprising a number of our party, and the staff helped us carry this out to the letter and honored our request to pay the check over the protests of my cousins. And did I mention how reasonable the prices are? Enjoy yourself in a confessional; go to Zum Beichstuhl!"

It's such a great place to enjoy the local wine and food. The building itself shows the history of the place, and the wines are all good and great price. This is one of my best place for my dining as I visit Mainz.

It is / does what it seems to claim to be: good honest local food and some very nice wine at very reasonable prices. Make sure you leave room for a desert. The pancakes were great and the creme brulee was (apparently) brilliant.

This place is very nice for enjoying good wine. Consider the food here more as something to feed you and go with the wine. The food is not bad but also nothing special. The place itself is very nice with a classical wooden interior.

One of our favorite restaurants and wine bars in Mainz. If with a group, make a reservation beforehand. The new owners continue the good work of their predecessors and added an interesting modern twist to local dishes. Listen to the wine advise!

My husband and I stumbled upon Zum Beichtstuhl - lucky us! We were early enough that we didn't need a reservation, and were able to sit on the patio. We started out with 2 dishes - a sausage platter and a cheese plate. Such a perfect complement to the fabulous wines that our waiter suggested! We then went on to share a tasty soup and smoked salmon salad. The food was top notch and the service was friendly and knowledgeable.

In general, I found German food a little uninspiring and heavy. But this place had very good local food, including a beautiful fig salad when I visited late August. Staff were helpful, recommended wonderful wine, as I'm not familiar with German varietals, and spoke perfect English to account for my utter lack of Deutsche! My favorite meal in Germany, particularly as we were able to sit outside. The inside looked nice, but perhaps a bit dark.

We went to this little weinhaus on the recommendation of a local shop owner. We were lucky to get a table in this tiny place, as it was packed (on a rainy Monday eve). The food was exquisite, cooked with fresh ingredients and presented with care. The owner was helpful with wine selections, without being pushy. Fantastic desserts, too (the orange crème brûlée was especially tasty). Warm and genuine atmosphere. We had a fantastic time and will be back for sure.

We had heard Zum Beichstuhl highly recommended as a great example of a typical Mainz Weinstübe so our expectations were quite high. maybe too high.The food was fine. Our asparagus soup was OK, but nothing more. my main course of pork was very tasty, nicely cooked so that the meat was nicely moist and the herby crust was good. There was a huge portion of Bratkartoffeln and I mean huge (I couldn't finish them). A tad greasy perhaps, but that's a matter of taste. My husband's steak took a long time to arrive. We'd pretty much all finished eating when it turned up! We might have expected something to be knocked off the bill or a free drink (the waiting staff admitted they'd forgotten the order)...

Had dinner there while on a business trip in Mainz. Was leasantly surprised by how nice the old city was. Dropped in on this restaurant as it had favorable reviews. While it has nice outdoor seating, all tables were occupied by groups of friends and families, when asked if there was available outdoor seating, the waiter proposed I sit with one of the groups as this is "how it works here". Give my German is rusty and the place was busy with what I perceived to be mostly locals, I elected to eat indoors. The wine list is front and center and you can sample many .
