"We have visited this pub on many occasions and never had any problems but this time it all seemed to go pear shaped. It took ages for the orders to be taken. There were 7 on our table and when the starters came we were 2 short. We had to chase them up. By the time they came the others had more or less finished theirs. The main course equally took a long time to come. Two medium steaks looked like they had been crusified! I don't know whether the staff were aware of this or whether they overheard our comments but they arrived with two more steaks that were medium. In fairness our waiter was very apologetic about the whole scenario and the management didn't charge us for the two late starters. We had 3 bottles of wine throughout the evening, mostly because of the long wait between courses and the management also did not charge us for one of them. All in all a disappointing evening at The Star but we would still go back as it is a half way point between us and our friends and we've never had a bad meal before. Let's hope it was just a blip."

Good food and service. The pub is quite large and was busy so can get a bit noisy but was a good evening out.

Roadside country pub popular with good ales, decent food and always something going on. It's owned by Mitchell

The food and service at this restaurant were great. The establishment is quite spacious and was bustling with customers, so it could get a bit noisy. Overall, it was a pleasant evening.

We experienced long waits in between courses and at the start for placing our orders. The food was mediocre overall, with my fish and chips being bland. Our shared Camembert appetizer lacked enough bread to accompany the cheese, leaving half of it uneaten. However, my friend enjoyed the lamb dish they ordered.

We waited a very long time to be served between courses, and to originally take our orders. The food itself was not anything special, I had fish and chips, which was flavorless. Me and my boyfriend shared baked Camembert as a starter but there was not enough bread to go with the cheese, meaning half of it was left. However, my friend had the lamb shank, which he found enjoyable.

We have frequented this pub several times without any issues, but our most recent visit was not as smooth. There was a delay in receiving our orders, and when our table of 7 received our starters, two were missing. We had to track down our server to rectify the error. Some of the main courses also took a while to arrive, and two of the steaks appeared overcooked. Our waiter was apologetic and the management comped the late starters. Despite the disappointing evening at The Star, we still plan to return as it is a convenient meeting spot for us and our friends, and we have never had a bad meal there before. Hopefully, this was just a one-off experience.

"Our first visit. We cannot praise thank The Wellie highly enough. What a find! Peacefully rural on a quiet road to the south of Baughurst. A classic, pretty country pub, now converted to an excellent restaurant, with three rooms. What strikes you first is how immaculate The Wellie is, inside and out. The large garden is a delight. Masses of dahlias and all manner of bushes and plants. Birds, birds and more birds. Do check out the vegetable garden beyond the rear car park. You then walk inside to the warmest of relaxed welcomes from the owners, Simon and Jason, and manager, Sheila, and their lovely young helpers. Nothing is too much trouble. The first thing you’ll spot is the array of fruit, veg salad for sale by the pub bar – the Wellie Deli. Along with home made jams, chutneys, quiches, etc. I then spotted the two hand pumps! Longdog Golden Poacher Basingstoke Pride. The seating inside is for diners every session is a sell out! But I was very happy to sup several excellent pints of well kept draught Basingstoke Pride in the garden – until I discovered their Negronis! Truly the best this side of Kwant (Piccadilly). We’d opted for the room in the pub: the Apartment. Two rooms on the first floor, knocked through. Enormous comfy bed, large rainfall shower, sofa, mini bar – two TVs! Free milk homemade shortbread. One of the discoveries we made here is the fabulous tea they serve from Prince Sons. As you can tell by now, we were very happy with our first stay at The Wellie… and then we went down for dinner! A truly exceptional menu from Jason’s kitchen, which changes each evening. Highlights were the scallops wrapped in pancetta, the pollack, the lamb pot pie, the twice baked cheese souffle, the NY cheesecake, the rhubarb ice cream, the treacle tart... All so fresh, tasty, and mainly from their garden. What we loved most was it was relaxed but fine dining without the tiny portions. The Full English breakfast the next morning was equally tasty. All in all, we did not want to go home! Thank you Simon, Jason Sheila. We will be back, soon."
