"Most of meals had gluten in , sausages and burgers both had gluten inthsi was for my friend .I ordered the noodle salad !! What a joke noodle salad description was noodles , courgettes , spring onions and carrots with a chilli dressing ! What came looked awful , looked like a pot noodle with 4 pieces of beef in , and lots of peas . None of the veg mentioned was visible. Looked like a watery soup . No staff came back to do a rain check on us so we complained at the end when they came to remove the plates . As a qualified chef a dressing is not a sauce ! The noodles were like mush . The waitress came back and offered me a free drink . No thank you I’ll go to strawberry gardens in future . Shocking place , shocking price 16.80 !!!!!!!! For a bowl of soup noodles"

Nice atmosphere, good food, good service. We ate indoors as it was getting to cold and rainy outside but could see large outdoors seating. Recommend it.

We visited with my in-laws today, service couldn’t be faulted but the food was very poor. We had all chosen beef roast dinner which came out luke warm, had to send it back to have it re-heated and the beef was so fatty gristly. We were all very disappointed not up to the usual standard

I’m not sure if it’s lack of experience in the kitchen but there were so many missing components to the dishes, they did get brought out when asked but that’s not the point My meal was lovely, and out of 6 people with starters and mains only one meal was meah! All others were lovely and plentiful.

We met up with friends from out of the area and their first visit to the royal for drinks. We had a lovely afternoon sat outside in the sunshine the staff worked hard with a smile on their faces. A special mention to Maddie our friends commented on her professionalism and excellent customer service she is a great asset to the pub.

The Lasagne was actually cremated, I should have returned it immediately. It was very burnt around the edges and the middle was dry, certainly wasn't able to dip my very lukewarm chips in the Lasagne sauce. Absolutely appalling for £15.30, I have had much better microwave meal lasagnes. AVOID at all costs. Management simply were NOT bothered.

We booked last minute for a party of nine and the staff were very accommodating. When we arrived we were met by Marcus, who was incredibly helpful and informative. The service by Millie and the rest of the team was second to none and the food itself was both beautifully presented and delicious. Could not fault the service or the food. Would highly recommend.

Lunch today at the Royal while I was visiting Heysham — I had a hankering for fish and chips, and what I got were THE BEST I have tasted for ages, seriously. Chips were thick and tasty and fluffy inside; fish had crispy batter and was really delicious (all served with mushy peas, tartare sauce and a lemon wedge, too). Just perfect, honestly. The pub has a really nice character-filled atmosphere and there were plenty of other things on the menu that I would be happy to try another time. Would highly recommend to anyone and hope to come again!

"I stayed here during my 2023 John O'Groats to Lands End ride, when I was accompanied by my wife and 13 year old son, who were acting as support crew. The Sun Hotel is a quirky boutique hotel housed in an historic building with extensive accommodation located above the pub and accessed via a unique flight of stairs and a labyrinth of intriguing corridors set out on different floors. Indeed, as you wander through, you are able to learn much about its character and history from many informative notes displayed on the walls. We shared a snug family room with a camp bed for our son but we were very comfortable. Our ensuite bathroom was clean and bright with a bath, shower and toiletries provided. The usual kettle, tea and coffee were provided but with limited alternative options. Make sure you turn off the provided digital alarm clock before slumbers unless you need an early start! There are truly are some larks out there. The room was a little noisy overnight where it was overlooking the street at the front – a combination of late night revellers and morning deliveries – but this is to be expected when you stay in the heart of a city. Lancaster was literally right on our doorstep. The staff were incredibly welcoming and approachable even before our stay responding promptly to any queries we had. We enjoyed dinner in the pub on the ground floor which was not overly noisy with a good atmosphere and attentive staff. The food was good and inexpensive, especially if you share a platter. Having booked direct with the hotel, our stay included breakfast from a set menu, served in the bar area downstairs. This was extensive ranging from the traditional cooked full English breakfast to many plant based and fruit alternatives, including pancakes, acai smoothie and granola jar. It is advisable to pre book this the night before to reduce waiting times in the morning if you are in a rush. Tea, coffee and fruit juice freely available The hotel is found on a complicated one way system with heavy traffic but well handled by Google. The cycle route approaches on quiet canal path but I did push up a one way street to the hotel rather than cycle a circuitous route around the one way. The only drawback is that there is no onsite parking not a problem if you only have a bike. At the time of our stay, there was paid street parking outside the hotel on the road for up to 1 hr or free overnight from 6 pm until 8 am. We would advise checking Google for parking locations beforehand to find alternatives, especially if the recommended nearby multi storey parking is not suitable because of a roof box, etc. My bike was locked away in a cellar inside, down a steep flight of stairs and only accessible by staff."
