"Came here for the first time today with a friend for lunch. Wasn't sure what to expect but wasn't disappointed. Had a lovely lunch at £12 for 2 courses. Choices for starters included baked camembert, smoked salmon and scallops. Mains included sirloin steak, pork, lamb chops with choice of potatoes. We both had the camembert and the steak. Both cooked to perfection. Lovely decor throughout (loved the Giles cartoons papering the toilet) and the lad behind the bar and serving us was very friendly and welcoming. Unfortunately I don't live locally but will be back when I'm this way again."

Sometimes you can truly wonder about the accuracy of Trip Adviser, not only was the information 3 years out of date but I received further emails suggesting I might want to go and take a look.

Food very good although menu somewhat limited. Staff very pleasant and attentive although it was incredibly cold in the pub, we all sat eating our meals in our winter coats which is not ideal.

First visit since the recent refurbishment. The new decor is fantastic, old sheet music used as wall paper, lovely decoration of the panelling, wooden floors, cosy lighting. Had a lovely meal all cooked to a high standard and the staff were very friendly. Will definitly be visiting again soon.

We are local and ever since this place re-opened, we've been coming for drinks and food. All I can say is that they improve everytime we come here which is regularly! Today my husband loved the starter so much (ordered as a snack! he ended up ordering two!! Spanish tortilla, my husbands Spanish, and it was as good as his mum's, dads and aunties in Spain!! keep going guys

Guinness wasn’t up to Guinness standards Food took ages to come, but it was nice (a bit pricey though) Service was very friendly and very helpful Had to remind the waiter about my food allergies as he was serving, luckily I did or I’d be in hospital... but he was very apologetic and change the items to suit my needs The place looks great and clean, but it was cold, a little fire wouldn’t have gone a miss

Visited for the first time since new management took over. There is a good menu now in place. Booked a table for six and spent a Saturday evening here. Couple of minor serving issues but it was a busy night and it’s still new, so no complaints. The food and drink was spot on. It’s a dog friendly place so there were a few in there. Mainly locals walking in as it’s easy to get to but there is local car parking available. Will certainly be visiting again.

Very disappointed, wanted to visit this pub since it reopened as we live in Polegate. Ordered the roast as it was Sunday, but it was almost inedible, the carrots were raw, the creamed cabbage was cold, the Yorkshire was hard and solid and the beef was as tough as old boots. My husband had Turkey and eat most his only because he was hungry after waiting an hour for our food. However given two stars as the staff were very friendly and helpful and did not charge me for my main course.

"Honestly...one of the best pub restaurants I have ever visited! We chose to eat here as it was recommended via Alistair Sawday, and it did not disappoint. The food, atmosphere, hygiene and service were all 5* when we visited last night. We sat inside, by candlelight, and ordered 2 starters (the Rye smoked mackerel with buttercream sauce and the heritage tomato salad and 2 mains (the beef burger with fries and the hake with toasted ciabatta and garden peas . It was truly exquisite! We both cleaned our plates (and we don't usually do that! . My only mild criticism is that I didn't realise the hake dish would include bacon lardons they certainly added to the flavour, but as an ethical pescatarian, this could have ruined the meal for me (I didn't allow it to, but 10 years ago when I was more strict it may have upset me . I may have simply missed this ingredient when reading the menu, and I didn't make the waiting staff aware of my dietary preferences, so I accept this was my fault and not theirs. It's just something for other pescatarians reading this review to be aware of. I have absolute confidence that they would prepare the hake dish without the bacon lardons if you asked. As for me....my boyfriend gleefully took them from my plate and demolished them himself! We also enjoyed a medium glass of wine each my boyfriend (who is very particular loved the tempranillo and I had their Italian pinot grigio. Our entire meal would have been less than £60, but with the current government incentive scheme to eat in, it came to less than £40!! We tipped generously as they truly deserved it. We will 100% be returning and can't advocate them enough."
