"This restaurant is amazing, I couldn't stop myself from taking photos. The pub meal was one of the best I've ever had. The gnocchi and sticky toffee pudding were arguably the best I've ever tasted (not eaten together). We are only in the area for a few nights, but we might come back tomorrow!"

"2 years ago we ate twice in this pub and the food was excellent and good value for money. This year we spotted the To Let sign stuck on the pub and made comment that things may not be the same. How right we were! Whitby scampi and chips with mushy peas and tartare sauce . Was actually Youngs frozen scampi not properly cooked, in fact I guess it was microwaved (soggy), Batchelors mushy peas (eventually) and just about passable chips. Steak with tomato, mushrooms, onion rings and chips . Best of the three but the onion rings never arrived! Steak and Ale pie with fresh vegetables and chips Microwaved bought in pie (soggy and lukewarm), tinned veg (soggy) and chips. Its so annoying when you recognise the shop bought food and sold as fresh . Some staff worked hard to make things right others couldn 't give a dam and didn 't bother hiding it. If you plan to visit try driving further afield for the time being,"

"Sunday Lunch at the Ilex had been recommended and we accepted a 1:30 booking as it was full for 1:00 starts. The ambiance is very pleasant and the service too. Prawn cocktail looked good with salad from the Hall garden, but the prawns were bland. Roast beef from lauded local butcher Higginsons looked good too, on top of a pile of vegetables and with Yorkshire pudding beside. The meat was more than a challenge for our teeth and even for the serrated knives, beans less than al dente and Yorkshires chewy too. A lot of our food went back, and we accepted the offer to charge us for one main course rather than two. Would the sticky toffee pudding lift the ending? No, not really as it was on the dry side, and the sauce couldn’t lift it enough. When Sunday Lunch is so competitive, the Ilex needs to live up to the standards of the delightful Holker Hall that hosts it."

"The meat in my chunky steak pie was indeed chunky but a bit too firm—not tough, just not tender. It seemed more likely that the wrong cut of meat was used rather than it being poorly cooked. For dessert, I had the caramel apple pie, which I shared with another member of my party. His was served hot, while mine was cold. I ordered mine with cream, but when it arrived, the cream had bubbles in it and was lukewarm. It seemed that my pie was microwaved first and then topped with cream, which caused it to cool down while the cream warmed up. As a result, the bottom pastry became soggy, and the rest of it didn’t have much crispness to begin with. I understand that times are tough and that pubs like this may not be able to make everything from scratch, but there are three other pubs nearby, and unfortunately, this one does nothing to distinguish itself from the others when it comes to food. Overall, it's a nice place for a quiet drink, but I won’t return for the food. The only silver lining was the price; we spent £80 for two rounds of drinks (one pint, one coke, and two halves per round), four main dishes, and two desserts. I suppose you get what you pay for."
