"We popped into the pub after a 5 mile walk around Shalford on a very cold day. A lovely warm fire and a cosy atmosphere greeted us and we immediately felt welcome.. we enjoyed well kept pints of Colchester Metropolis and Greenjack Nightingale. The highlight was the food though. Huffers with beef brisket and chips. Chicken Caesar wraps with Chips. I had what I had only read about in the books of James Lee Burke a Shrimp Po’ Boy it was excellent. And did I mention the chips?up there with the best we’ve ever had. A visit to this pub might actually make you move to Shalford."

The best bbq sauce and lovely smoked meats are the first thing you should order. It's a lovely old pub with a roaring fire and welcoming staff.

Focused menu, simple and excellent! The locally smoked meats are outstanding with best chips ever! Great selection of ales and a lovely, friendly local environment, which our dog loves! You must try it!

The service at this restaurant was excellent during the lockdown period! I highly recommend the nachos, fish and chips, and the steak and ale pie. The Shalford ale available for takeout was also delicious! Voir le carte

The team at this restaurant is doing an excellent job, as we have visited multiple times already. The smoked meats are amazing, especially in the traditional Essex rolls. The staff are very friendly, and the atmosphere with the lit fires and pool table is delightful. It definitely feels like a gathering place for the community once again.

We have been to this pub a few times and can’t rate it highly enough. Staff are friendly and welcoming, the food is amazing, the beer choice excellent and the whole environment is warm and cosy. They have recently started doing breakfast aswell and I have to say it is one of the best, if not THE breakfast I’ve ever had. Highly recommend the local homemade BBQ aswell, it’s awesome. This restaurant offers fantastic food, including delicious smoked meats served in wraps and sandwiches straight from their onsite smoker. Their chips are a must-try and worthy of a return visit on their own. The restaurant is housed in a charming and historic pub with a large central fireplace and serves authentic cask ales. The staff are friendly, the food is top-notch, and the beer selection is excellent. All of this is set in a beautiful old building, making it the ideal village pub experience.

You must try the Huffers. A sour dough type baked roll stuffed with either, beef brisket, shrimp po-boy, chicken parmigiana, and more besides. Excellent chips and quite possibly the best homemade BBQ sauce ever. The menu maybe small but it is absolutely worth stopping off for a great lunch, in this cozy little pub. Plus there's a lovely big open fire. Definately one to remember when passing though this part of Essex in future. Oh and the landlord and staff were extremely friendly and welcoming. Plus Boydells farm is just around the corner.

"We came here on a last minute hunt to find a Sunday roast with family without much expectations. However when entering its a lovely set up and we were greeted by Lee and Alison who looked after us for the meal who just to begin were absolutely brilliant, they really care about the customers and make this place extra special. Now for the food you can get a 2 or 3 course meal so everybody made various selections but all had starters. Most went for the Aarancina which isn't your usual starter with a Sunday roast but for here it packs alot of flavour and is a great way to start the meal. They have a great selection of alcoholic beverages I went for a simple beer. For the main roasts we had a variety of meats I wanted the pork but sadly they had no crackling which was half the reason for ordering but if I am being honest after eating the meal it wasn't missed out the meat was tasty full of flavour but the sides were the key. The roast potatoes were of a top level usually when you eat out they are never as good as eating at home, the Yorkshire were huge and tasty, gravy brilliant with plenty to go around and lots of veg and cauliflower cheese on the side. Honestly this was excellent a really good roast probably the best I have ever ate in a resteraunt. Some of the others had the lamb shank which was huge and had great feedback but the beef was great and so was everything else. So yes check it out eat in and eat some great food in a nice setting with absolutely brilliant service you won't be disappointed."
