"The George is our local, and closest pub. We missed it when it was closed until earlier this year, and welcomed it being open again. It was a bit hit miss back in early 2020, with no chef one night, broken down oven the next, which put us off to be honest. Then COVID hit, and everything shut.In June or July it opened again, and we visited hoping for the best. We met the new owner, who apparently runs a large pub/restaurant in Clacton, and he was really nice and friendly. He was also a really good chef, and the food we had on two occasions was really good, with generous portions and reasonable prices. And the service was great.Unfortunately, it appears standards have dropped.....We visited this evening, and were greeted by a friendly bar man who was there last time.It transpired that the owner from Clacton had put a manager in the pub, and was not there tonight. We each ordered rump steak at approx. £15 each along with 2 x starters (which were the best part!)My wife asked for her steak medium rare and I requested mine to be medium. We were told that they had no chips, only fries, which was ok, but I would have preferred thick cut chips. We asked if the steaks came with a sauce, or if sauce could be purchased, but after the bar man popped off to the kitchen, he returned and said no.We had noticed that we could add stilton to a burger for £1.50, so we asked if we could have stilton on our steaks. The steaks arrived with minimal salad, and both steaks were over cooked, and well done. The steaks were chewy, and dry. When the young lady behind the bar (who we thought was a bar maid, but was actually the new manager parachuted in), came over to check if all was well, I mentioned that the steaks were not cooked as ordered, and over cooked. The female said she would mention it to the kitchen, and promptly disappeared, never to return. There was very little stilton sprinkled onto either steak. Certainly not £1.50 each worth, unless it was vintage cheese?!!We ate and chewed our way through the steaks, and finally finished. The bar man came to clear our table, and asked if everything was ok, and I again mentioned that our steaks were over cooked. He apologised, and disappeared. We also mentioned that the mayonnaise sachets were all out of date, and had expired on 17/08/2020, 4 days ago. I know its not massively out of date, but its not great.Nobody came back to our table to offer us a dessert menu, so we finished our drinks and went to the bar to pay.We asked the female manager for the bill, and she disappeared, and sent the bar man over in her place, just as he was tucking into his pint behind the bar.The bill came to approx. £61. I paid this, and after doing so (as I am not in the habit of complaining to get money off the bill), I again mentioned to the bar man that we were disappointed with this visit, compared to the previous ones. I again stated that our steaks were overcooked, and that we weren 't offered dessert, or the bill at our table.I also queried the £3 charge on the bill marked MISC FOOD, which I was informed was the charge for the stilton on the steaks. I mentioned that it was expensive for the minimal amount of stilton we got, but no response was forthcoming. The bar man just looked at me, and said sorry, and appeared very awkward, and unsure what to say or do.The manager never came near.I said to the bar man that we were disappointed, and that this visit was not as good as previous visits, and hoped for better next time. The bar man just replied OK, Sorry about that. It is a real shame that tonight was a let down. We like the George, and we try to support our local pub.I think that the staff in there currently do not have the same enthusiasm and customer care as the owner, and let the place down, when he is not around.I want the George to succeed, and remain open. I will return, but if the service and food continues to be poor, then I will not be quite so keen to attend.Maybe tonight was a one off, but next time I will order something more simple like scampi or gammon.Fingers crossed its better next time!"

Visited on a Sunday for a roast, would not recommended. There was a friendly atmosphere from the waitress but when we arrived there was no menu to choose from and was served a very minimal roast dinner. Roast was cold and potato’s and Yorkshire’s were clearly packet frozen and still cold: Veg was very watery and 2 small slices of meat. No children’s options.

I had a pleasant meal and beer at this restaurant on January 17th. I would like to clarify some misinformation I have seen - currently, the restaurant is open on Wednesdays to Sundays (not as indicated on their website), but there are plans to expand the opening days. They close at 12:00 AM. Contrary to rumors, the restaurant is not cold and the service is excellent!

It's great to see the George restaurant reopen with Steve and Anna at the helm. We recently had a delicious family lunch before Christmas, although be mindful of portion sizes. They offer a good selection of local ales and reasonably priced wines, and they are dog friendly too. We're excited to see what success 2020 brings for them. Let's continue to support our local businesses!

Was it open mike night or karaoke for one person? Quite well attended for a January although is was difficult to work out whether most of the customers were putting a brick wall between them and the music or they 'd had a meal and not moved. What was obvious was that most of the prime seating in the pub 'area ' had been taken over for entertainment leaving the largely separate restaurant area. A questionable decision... just saying. The George used to pride itself on having a good range of beers and was well attended when that was the case. Now the limited selection 2 or 3 beers at best from 2 breweries likely reduces customer footfall as does not being clear when the pub is open or closed an...

I think I’m in love. It almost makes me want to divorce my husband that I left 10 years ago and get rid of the father of my child… THIS is exactly how pubs used to be… but with a massive twist: the food. The menu is small and if smoked meats is what you want, here is the place for you. I insist, really, you must go. It’s clean, welcoming and has a fire going next to the bar to heat the beautiful historic building. There’s a pool table and plenty of seating inside and out. The toilets are modern. The decor eclectic and inviting. Now, the most important bit: food. Heaven in my mouth. Smoked brisket, pulled pork, chicken, shrimp, bbq pork… none of this bought in rubbish. The chips are to die fo...

"We came here on a last minute hunt to find a Sunday roast with family without much expectations. However when entering its a lovely set up and we were greeted by Lee and Alison who looked after us for the meal who just to begin were absolutely brilliant, they really care about the customers and make this place extra special. Now for the food you can get a 2 or 3 course meal so everybody made various selections but all had starters. Most went for the Aarancina which isn't your usual starter with a Sunday roast but for here it packs alot of flavour and is a great way to start the meal. They have a great selection of alcoholic beverages I went for a simple beer. For the main roasts we had a variety of meats I wanted the pork but sadly they had no crackling which was half the reason for ordering but if I am being honest after eating the meal it wasn't missed out the meat was tasty full of flavour but the sides were the key. The roast potatoes were of a top level usually when you eat out they are never as good as eating at home, the Yorkshire were huge and tasty, gravy brilliant with plenty to go around and lots of veg and cauliflower cheese on the side. Honestly this was excellent a really good roast probably the best I have ever ate in a resteraunt. Some of the others had the lamb shank which was huge and had great feedback but the beef was great and so was everything else. So yes check it out eat in and eat some great food in a nice setting with absolutely brilliant service you won't be disappointed."

"What can I say….We held our wedding dinner and impromptu party ! on the mezzanine floor and had the time of our lives with our nearest and dearest. It’s been a pretty special place for us as we dined at the House by Hilly Gant to check the area out before moving from London and so as we were having a small wedding of 22 people we felt this was the best place to have our wedding. Suzanne and the team could not have done anything more to make our afternoon and evening so perfect. The food was outstanding and our guests were very impressed Harry and his cocktail making skills are second to none. Huge shout out to all the kitchen staff who’s attention to detail and timings were spot on. Leading up to the day itself Suzanne took charge and offered her expert advice on how to dress the room and made so much effort with our requirements. 3 children and 1 baby as part of the guest list! . The beef in particular was spectacular and the chocolate fondant was sublime. We honestly didn’t want to leave. After dinner Suzanne was able to crank the music up and we had a little party ensuring all the guests downstairs were still well looked after our friends were actually dining downstairs and were able to join us towards the latter part of the evening! From the bottom of our hearts thank you so much to everyone for making it so special for us. I’m not surprised that you were recently awarded your second rosette, totally deserved. For anyone looking for quality food, locally sourced, and beautifully executed this is the place to come. SEE YOU SOON and thank you again x"
