"EXCELLENT FOOD!! Everything we tried was delicious. The complimentary tapenade was surprisingly addictive, even though neither of us like olives—it was a delightful surprise. For starters, we had the crab arancini and pork, both of which were incredibly fresh and served piping hot; they were thoroughly enjoyable. For our main courses, we chose the monkfish and venison, and we couldn't find any faults with either. The monkfish was cooked to perfection, tender and flaky, while the venison was also expertly cooked. We managed to save room for dessert, and it was absolutely worth it. The sticky toffee pudding was one of the fluffiest I've ever had, and the chocolate torte was enormous and utterly amazing. It was clear that the staff were passionate about their work and took the time to share insights about the food and the local area with us. This restaurant is definitely worth a visit. The higher price point is justified by the quality and quantity of the dishes."

"5* simply because I can’t leave 10! Dropped in here in desperation today Easter Saturday) after travelling around to a couple of places and not being able to get a table. Thought we were off to the Chinese in Pickering when we stopped her and asked if dogs were allowed in? Yes we were told and then did they have a table for 2? Despite being full and tables reserved they found us one, we had to wait a bit to have our order taken but they did get us drinks straight away while we waited for them to deal with the party of 8 that came in just before us. When they did take out order I went for the sirloin steak and my wife the lasagna. This was finished with apple crumble custard and hot choc fudge cake custard. We can honestly say it all was cooked to perfection. The steak I haven’t had so good in a long time even when I’ve cooked it) and the wife’s lasagna was spot on too. Puddings tasted perfect too. Lovely, small, but reasonable quite pub considering it was full. Staff were outstanding, friendly, helpful and polite apologising for our wait which considering we dropped in on the off chance was our fault not theirs. The landlord was great. Joking and making us feel at home and actually wanted. As others have said, every pub needs a landlord like this. Our only regret was it was our last night that we popped in even though over the years we’ve driven past it so many times. If you want a well cooked meal at a nice quiet county pub with good service and polite staff you don’t need to look any further. We will definitely be back here when in the area. Thank you so much to all the staff."

The monkfish was cooked perfectly, it was soft and fell apart. The venison was also perfectly cooked. We managed to squeeze in dessert which was well worth it. It was one of the fluffiest sticky toffee puddings I've ever had and the chocolate torte was huge and absolutely incredible. It was easy to tell the staff were passionate about their business and took the time to talk to us about the food and the local area. Definitely worth a visit. The higher price tag is reflected in the quality and quantity of the dishes."

"Since March 23 this pub has been operating under a sub lease from Star Inns (Heineken been sublet to a pub company (WJS who in turn install managers, so 3 businesses trying to take revenue from one country pub. This has been a disaster for our village, we are on our 5th management team since March and we all hope the middle men WJS just disappear, they are the problem in the equation and continue to be so. However The current management team of Andy and Laura are doing a magnificent job. The pub is now clean, the food menu has been brilliantly refreshed with some magnificent seafood specials and they have recruited a very good team. In short Andy and Laura have massively turned this business around and is back to what it was, a wonderful local. Last night, lovely log fire, bar packed with locals (first time since March! and a wonderful atmosphere. Quite rightly this establishment has had some very well deserved horrendous reviews since March. (WJS hold your heads in shame and leave our village as soon as possible, horrible and unworkable business model However Andy and Laura are doing a magnificent job, the place is brilliant and anyone looking at previous reviews should ignore them and return to this now reinvigorated pub! "We booked a table to finish our day out in Pickering. On arrival, we were taken to our seat and asked which drinks we would like. We asked for Tiger bottles, they brought us it in glasses, it was flat. We ordered our food, on arrival of the starter, it was full of salt, that is all we could taste, not only on 1 starter but 2. On arrival of our main, Fillet Steak sizzling dish, the meat was un chewable and fatty, fillet steak should have no fat in it. It tasted dreadful. The sirloin steak we ordered was the same again, not what we ordered. The chicken was Grey! We asked to speak to management regarding the poor quality food the lady was really unprofessional! Shouting abuse, talking in her own language to another member of staff and even threatening to call the police. We agreed to paying half of what we did not eat as the woman was aggressive towards us. The food was appalling, the carpets were dirty and the toilet brushes were rusty very dirty. We will not be back.
