"Lovely friendly little pub, popular with locals but also very welcoming to visitors. Good above average very tasty food using locally sourced meat such as Welsh lamb and beef. Highlights for us were the Welsh lamb shank and gorgeous shepherds pie with plenty of nice chunks of local meat and the homemade apple crumble. Pizzas also hand done from scratch with toppings made to order which we didn 't have but heard the impressed comments from the next table! You can order a 'pizza and a pint ' which was very good value. The food is all very good value we thought. There are vegetarian options which also looked good such as mushroom and red pepper stroganoff. Dogs are welcome and they even have a jar of doggy biscuits on the bar. It 's a small but cosy pub with a nice feel to it. It can get busy at weekends as there aren 't a lot of tables as it 's a small village pub, so would strongly suggest booking a table. Reasonable amount of parking space and a nice peaceful garden area which has one 6/8 seater wooden bench on the grass area and another plastic table on the tarmac area. Suggestion for the owners...it would be nice to have another one or two smaller tables or benches as well as the big long one on the grass area. We noticed a separate room off from the main pub which was set up as a children 's play area with toys etc and looked like a nice addition. We were visiting the area and staying here so ate here on several nights as it was so good. Breakfast was also very good. One of the best we 've ever had. Would highly recommend. They are trying really hard with this pub and deserve to do well."

This restaurant is a delightful hidden gem. The cozy pub setting was perfect for our family, especially with the children's room to keep them entertained. The meals were all freshly homemade and extremely delicious, including the desserts.

We called in for Sunday lunch and had a fantastic meal. The place has got a lot of old photos lamps and various items in the bar as well as a log burner. The staff were very friendly and helpful nothing was too much trouble. Thank you we’ll be back to see you.

The restaurant offers delicious food at a reasonable price. It is located in a charming village with a traditional vibe. The clientele consists of both locals and tourists, creating a welcoming atmosphere. Definitely recommend stopping by if you are in the area.

During our holiday in Ystrad Meurig, we decided to dine at the Black Lion. The pub has a charming, traditional atmosphere and the staff and patrons were extremely friendly. We ordered pizza from the menu and were impressed with how deliciously cooked and well-presented they were. Definitely worth a visit.

Value for money is exceptional and the food is absolutely delicious. The menu is small but perfectly designed around the star attraction of the main meal. We always choose the beef which is perfectly pink and the accompanying veg is amazing. Great service and great food. On a good day, you can hear the chef singing from the kitchen ;

A cosy and comfortable traditional pub with excellent food. Staff are friendly and accommodating. They cater for food allergies and vegetarians. (If you phone 24 hours before dining more choice would be available). Only disappointment was the cafetière was weak. Luckily the espresso was excellent. Dogs allowed, biscuits available. An unexpected little gem.

Visited this evening while on holiday locally having been recommended. From the outside, it doesn't look up to much, but inside is quaint and cosy, with a friendly welcome. From the varied menu, we had gammon, mushroom and red pepper stroganoff and pizza (made to order with choice of toppings). All fresh and very tasty. For pudding we had a rhubarb crumble, chocolate brownie and a waffle with peanut butter ice cream and Nutella. Again, all delicious. Helpful waitress offered suggestions for things to do in the local area. We hope to return during our stay for another meal.

I visited The Black Lion with 4 other girls on a Tuesday evening and we really enjoyed it! The man behind the bar was very helpful and friendly. I had the lasagne and it was delicious but unfortunately I couldn 't finish it because it was such a generous portion which was very reasonably priced!! My friend has the 'Make your own pizza ' and nonce of us were expecting it to be that big and she loved it! She couldn 't finish it so we took the rest home. The atmosphere in the pub was a nice and friendly. I definitely would visit there again if I was staying in the area or even just passing through.

Very cramped eating area,left waiting at bar for a time as barman doubled as the waiter. When our Sunday lunch arrived meat was cold, left sitting on plate to long in kitchen, bowl of veg very sparing, certainly not enough for two people, and frozen Yorkshire puds!! Decided to have a pudding, as we were both still hungry they only had a choice of two, plus ice cream, when I asked why they served only two, which by they way were the same two as most of the other pubs in the area serve, I was told it was for convenience, plus I only had the choice of cream with it. Will not be returning, was a poor show, I like to feel I've had a good Sunday lunch, not go home hungry.

"Great food and been there many times. As a party of 7, with 3 children under 6 years, thought best to book a table. Told on the phone that they don 't take bookings. Arrived early and found a large table, and just as the other 6 were arriving I was told the table was booked! If I 'd known I would have found another cafe. As it was we waited ages for a table with small children milling around, complete with dirty looks from staff. Disappointing. Some suggestions on how you could have dealt with the situation better: 1. Let us stay on the table until another table was ready, as the party for the reserved table did not turn up for over half an hour. 2. Apologise that the table was not clearly marked as reserved. There was a bottle that I noticed much later, where 'reserved ' was written on only one side, which faced the kitchen. 3. The waiter should have mentioned the reservation rather giving me menus and taking a coffee order while I waited. 4. The waiters (yes several, I must have looked like trouble) who turfed me off the table just as my family were arriving could have explained why the table was reserved when i had been unable to reserve a table because, as you said on the phone, you 'don 't take reservations '. You replied that it was reserved for a 'private party ' and when I asked how that differed from a table booking, you kept repeating the words 'private party '. I was none the wiser. 5. An apology would have gone a long way rather than treating me as a difficult customer. 6. You made me feel totally unwelcome at your restaurant. 7. Well done! Your service, or rather the lack of it, has lost a formerly loyal customer. Quite frankly I 'd rather eat at MacDonalds, at least they 're polite to their customers.
