"This is the Austrian style restaurant in the Alpenland hotel. Normally I would avoid a hotel restaurant like the plague - too many years in sales, trekking up and down the motorway in my Ford Sierra, staying in anonymous forgettable chains. But it's a nice hotel, rather better than the rep places I used to stay in. Most of the residents are families on holiday rather than reps, though there are a few obviously here on business. Every night is a special menu night. I don't think they do an à la carte menu, though there may well be one available on request. First night was Ribs night. Help yourself to Gulaschsuppe and then to the salad buffet. I'm not wildly keen on goulash soup, though my wife is a big fan. The salad buffet was okay but not as good as in the hotel's Italian restaurant at the far end of the corridor. A rack of pork spare ribs came. It was fine. It came with Sauté potatoes although we had asked for chips, but I was happy with them. It would have been churlish to complain about something that I didn't care about! But not as good as the ribs at the Rübezahlalm in Scheffau. A couple of nights later came Wiener Schnitzel evening. Well I can take em or leave em, but my wife loves them. I prefer my veal not cooked in batter. But I perked up when I realised that there was a choice on the menu, and not just a choice between veal, Turkey or pork Schnitzel. Starter was Rindsuppe mit Fleischstrudel. That's beef consommé and meat strudel. You know Apfelstrudel of course? Well imagine a savoury one with minced beef. I had no idea what to expect, but it was very good indeed. Salad from the salad table again. My wife liked her Wienerschnitzel. My main course was leg of lamb in onion and thyme sauce with green beans and polenta knödel. Well the polenta was the best polenta ever! Not something I usually enjoy, this was delicious. I don't usually order a sweet but Apfelstrudel arrived unexpectedly but yummily, with a little scoop of slightly melted raspberry ice cream."

At the hotel. Very good food, specials every day so one can have a full meal for a reasonable price. The waiters are very professional

If you are staying in the Alpenland DEFINITELY, invest in daily breakfast! So, many. And Alpi, the automated plate boy is a Hoot to watch the zipper in the dining room. We were always happy to start our day from here.

Charming place if you are looking for a typical Austrian atmosphere. We stayed there for half board and enjoyed it thoroughly. If ever, the menu is a bit rich, but you can always turn off the soup and/or the salad. All options, eating, fish and vegetarians, were good and the cakes and pastries are excellent. The only negative point is the wine, very limited range...

The menu changes often and is typically Austrian comfort food good for skiers and hikers as fitting for a resort hotel in the area. Decor distinctly 3 star and tired. Very good asparagus specials. But we realised our mistake quickly as our entrees filled us completely, well before the huge platters of schnitzel arrived. Truly, not plates. The portion sizes are gigantic and we were defeated quite easily (something unusual.) Having said that the couple next to us cleaned their plates, and the waitress was surprised we did not eat more. Really? It was like Man bs Food. To the extent we didn't go back as we may have exploded. Quite average wine list but heaps of beer Voir le carte

"We went to the Steakhaus Rauchkuchl based on previous reviews. We were staying just up the hill so it was only a two minute walk from the hotel. There is no doubt about the theme of this restaurant as once you've entered it's like an all American rodeo show! We arrived around 8.30pm on the Saturday night and were surprised that there were only a few tables occupied. We sat in the smaller non-smoking section but could've sat on the adjoining outside terrace if we so wished. We were given a nice, courteous welcome by the waiter. The menu has a decent selection so it's ok for someone who prefers something other than beef!We ordered a camembert starter to share. It came with some lovely lightly toasted baguette style bread and is definitely worth a go. For the main meal my wife ordered a Steaktoast - lots of small steak pieces covering a lightly toasted slice of bread. Not keen on garlic sauce she asked to swap for the cocktail sauce which the waiter was happy to agree to. This was more like what we'd call a ranch dressing - not at all a cocktail sauce you get with prawns in the UK.Myself, I went for a proper steak, the 350g (14oz) Rib Eye. This was perfectly cooked to Medium rare as ordered and was simply excellent. The waiter suggested a Jack Daniels sauce to accompany the steak and he was right, they went very well together. A nice side salad was part of the meal and I ordered an extra side of big fat chips - well what's a steak without the chips? As it was our last night in Austria we thought we'd sign off with a traditional Apfel Strudel. Unfortunately this did not match our expectations as clearly it was not freshly made and was quite stodgy. We had eaten Strudel earlier on our holiday so knew how good it could be! Nevertheless we polished it off and ended the meal very satisfied overall. If we went back again though we'd probably give the dessert a miss. After settling the bill we wandered back to the hotel where it dawned on me that I'd left my mobile phone on one of the seats back at the restaurant. Luckily the waiter had found it and kept it safe for me. Vielen Dank!"
