"Bit of a mixed review. We stayed here last night, after walking the 25km Keswick to Langdale section of the Cumbria way. We are not pro-hikers and we were aiming to get to the Hotel at 7pm, as we thought the kitchen would probably shut at 8pm or 9pm. The hike took us longer than expected (walking with our kids), and even though we practically ran the last kilometre we arrived at 8:05pm. We asked if we could still get any food and the chef brusquely told us the kitchen shut at 8pm, but there were bar snacks (crisps). I honestly nearly cried!! We were all exhausted and starving. There are no shops nearby and we didn’t have a car. I know we were late but a bit of compassion would have gone a long way. I wasn’t expecting the whole menu, given that we were late but perhaps some chips or an offer of a sandwich? Genuinely I’m the kind of person who tends to leave 5 star reviews. But this ruined the stay for me. In its favour, the location is amazing, the rooms were fine, the breakfast was good and the staff were on the whole friendly and helpful. The bar man was really good to the kids, giving them flapjack on the house. But for me, the total lack of empathy was pretty unforgivable. Response to management reply: Just to say that we absolutely were trying to ring ahead, but we had zero reception on the hills. I agree and understand that the kitchen staff should only work until the end of their shift. However, I would respectfully suggest that some sort of back up cold food service (e.g. sandwiches) could be put in place by management for this type of situation. I’m sure the reception team or the barman could be trained to provide this. It really would have made the world of difference to us. If you are running a hotel in the middle of a city, there’s less need for this, but I think it’s pretty essential hospitality for a walkers hotel in the middle of the Lake District with no comms or shops nearby. I think it would have been less awkward for the chef too, if he had a decent alternative to be able to point us at. I understand he was tired and at the end of his shift, so I don’t blame him for being abrupt. It could so easily have been a great experience, with just a little bit of flexibility and I would have been so grateful for it. Please consider making a change."

One of my favourite pubs. It is set in the beautiful Great Langdale. A wide selection of real ales well kept. Enjoyed the steak and ale pie and chips large portion. Tasted really nice. Can't wait until my next visit. Voir le carte

The location is what this pub is all about and this is hard to beat. Our room was okay, although it was very hot as the radiators were still on even though it was a warm day in July! Breakfast was fine. It's a shame you can't eat outdoors on a sunny morning and enjoy the fresh air.

Very remote location. Roads are not for the faint hearted driver. Plus walkers and cyclists to be aware of. Good base for walking in Langdale, paths lead up to the tops from hotel gardens. Staff are excellent too, food is delicious, both breakfast and in the bar for lunch and dinner, with generous portions. Quiet at night except for wildlife, and very dark. Car parking and also a NT car park for busy times.

After enjoying a day of walking in the Langdales, we stopped by for a drink at this restaurant. We were so impressed that we came back another day for both drinks and food. The chicken, leek, and ham pie with chips and vegetables was absolutely delicious - the perfect meal after a day of hiking. The restaurant offers a lovely area to sit and take in the stunning scenery, and parking is available as well. Highly recommended. Voir le carte

Beautiful location perfect for hiking, trail running or just admiring the scenery; my room was a reasonably priced single occupancy one, with a private bathroom down the hall both were done out well, comfortable clean; the bar was well stocked it is obviously very popular with a good atmosphere all 3 nights I was there; food was good my only wish was that there were more specific veggie/vegan options as a special the one main option was very tasty, but it would have been nice to try more dishes; breakfast was included what I had was nice; staff all friendly, a couple were quite quirky, and I was made to feel welcome; wonderfully dog friendly as well!

This restaurant is easy to overlook, but on a beautiful summer day, that would be a shame. We didn't stay at the hotel, so we can't comment on that aspect of the business. However, we stopped here for some food and drinks after visiting Blea Tarn and the surrounding fells. The food menu is simple, but the portions are generous and delicious. They also have a great selection of ales, and the Climbers Bar has a rustic and old-world charm. One thing to note is that there is a National Trust car park next to the pub, so be sure to pay for parking to avoid a penalty notice. The location itself is stunning, showcasing the beauty of the Lake District. Overall, this is a great spot to relax and refr...

"We were sure to book ahead for a table of 4 for 5.15 as it was a late Sunday roast we were fully aware that not everything would be available so it was no surprise when we were told that there was only gammon left for the roast option however there was still fish and chips homemade steak pie or vegetable lasagne. We happily opted for 3 gammon roast dinners and a homemade steak pie with mash (you get the choice of which potato you'd like) The food arrived piping hot with plenty of everything and it was so so tasty you could really tell everything was lovingly made from scratch for the roast the potatoes came both roasted and mashed with cauliflower, broccoli and carrot and swede mash. A generous helping of gammon and a large Yorkshire pudding with gravy that was clearly made with the juices as it was so flavourful. The steak pie was brilliant too homemade with large chunks of steak and a choice of potato and whether you'd like the same veg as that with the roast or with peas. This also came with gravy. For dessert there was a choice of either chocolate fudge cake, caramel apple pie or sticky toffee pudding and you had the choice of either cream, ice cream or custard. 2 of us got it with custard and 2 of us got it with ice cream and it wasn't overbearingly sweet it was perfect with a delicious caramel top! We all thoroughly enjoyed all the food and the drinks and service and will be back again one day if we find ourselves holidaying here again"
