"My wife and I had a rather less than satisfactory experience at the M S Café in the Milton Keynes Centre MK store today. We arrived at about 1.30 pm. I ordered fish and chips. My wife wanted soup, but was unable to have it as it was not gluten-free. Soup in restaurants should always be gluten-free, it only means using a gluten-free flour, such as corn flour, instead of wheat flour. We sat down to await the food, and were then approached by a member of staff who told us that the fish was out of stock, and that checkout had been told this an hour beforehand, but were still taking orders for it. This is not the first time we have encountered menu items being out of stock at lunchtime. How on earth does the café run out of a basic menu item? Surely they should have ample stocks so that this does not happen? We have in the past queried why they can’t just go down to the Foodhall and get some more, but have been told that the café’s stocks are delivered separately from those of the Foodhall, and they are not allowed to restock from the Foodhall. What a ridiculous situation. I changed my order to a fish finger sandwich. Then while we were still waiting for the food to be delivered the table tipped violently and spilled our tea and coffee everywhere. It was a 2-seat table, with a round base supported on rubber feet. One of the feet must have been missing, allowing the table to tilt. This was reported to a member of staff, and we moved to another table. The table and chairs were eventually cleaned, but nothing was done about the table’s instability. When our food arrived we picked up our cutlery and noticed that it was not clean, and we had to go and sort through the cutlery to find some that was clean. There was plenty of cutlery in the containers that was not clean. This was reported to a staff member. In general, there did not seem to be as many staff as there used to be, and the tables were not cleared very quickly. In retrospect we should have insisted on seeing a manager, but we had had enough and just wanted to get out of the store. When we got home my wife remarked that the fish finger sandwich was rather expensive, as she had only been refunded 50p for my change of order from fish and chips to a fish finger sandwich. As far as I can recall the price of the sandwich on the menu board was £5.50, so there should have been a £3 refund."
