"So having spent the day at Garmisch we called in at Mittenwald for a quick look around and a bite to eat. Having walked up and down the main street and completed our retail therapy we were not over enthused by the menu's on offer....After days of Austrian/Germanic cuisine my wife was looking for a change and something simple. Egg chips was her inkling and after finding our way to the carved statue of a violin appearing out of a tree trunk we thought we had found her desire at the Gasthof Gries. When we had eventually obtained a menu in English there on the first page was three eggs and potatoes. That was her sorted or so we thought. The service was not outstanding and their ability to converse in English was as poor as our effort to converse in German (both my wife and I did French all those years ago). Anyway it transpired that the menu we were using was old and they no longer offered the dish that my wife wanted. Since we already had drinks in front of us we decided on Holzfallersteak and the universal Wiener Schnitzel. It took a very long time to arrive and in fact it had gone dark outside by the time it arrived and we were both hungry enough to eat a scabby horse. So they have about bench tables outside and on a warm evening it is very pleasant. Also inside looked warm and inviting and so this is also an option. We found the service to be indifferent towards us (and we were not the only table trying to attract the waitresses attention) but the food was good, tasty, plentiful and very reasonably priced. We didn't stay for desert (probably would have arrived with the coffee and buns of breakfast) as we had some Ice cream at the apartment with our name on it. Oh and they only take payment in cash and so ensure you have enough for your meal as credit cards are not an option."

Schade.

Good food, nice Bavarian atmosphere, good service all at a reasonable price. Our hotel recommended and they were right.

We ate here since the restaurant is owned by the Mittenwalder Brewery, but decided that we much prefer the food at the Post Keller restaurant which is located at the actual brewery....

We stopped her to order Kaiserschmarrn before our trip home and we were very pleased we did: my friend went as far as to say that it was the best Kaiserschmarrn he'd ever tasted! The views are beautiful and the local bier is served here....I would also recommend the Spinatknödeln which were very good.

We enjoyed our lunch here, we found the waitress to be helpful friendly. Menu was traditional Bavarian cuisine. We had a beef vegetable soup with dumplings which the flavours were fairly average, we then had the schnitzel which was quite nice, served with...the Bavarian style sauteed potatoes with bacon....they were delicious (Bratkartoffeln) Be aware credit cards are not accepted here.

we visited this restaurant tonight and had a wonderful time. our waitress was friendly, efficient and welcoming. we enjoyed the cordon bleu schnitzel and the pork filet medaillen, and both meals were excellent. the meal served other guests while we saw there. a man on the table next to us ordered crispy black bone and it saw a complete contrast to what we had recently eaten in the alpenrose on Saturday last. the flesh was tender, fell from the bone and he looked really happy. in this week we will visit the gasthof gries again.

We visited this restaurant this evening and had a wonderful time. Our waitress was friendly, efficient and welcoming. A man at the table beside us ordered crispy pork knuckle and it looked a complete contrast to what we had recently eaten in the Alpenrose on Saturday last. The meat was tender, falling off the bone and he looked really happy. We will be visiting the Gasthof Gries again this week.

"I admit to being biased. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, and the options for German food are not as extensive as I would like, and I'm surprised that these days they haven't yet found a way to charge you for water and...cutlery. When I dine at a place like Postkeller, the value is just off the charts. There is almost a full menu of dinner options that cost less than an appetizer at some of the restaurants I visit back home. The portions at Postkeller are quite generous, and the food is very flavorful and delicious. And then there is the beer. Oh, the beer. In the San Francisco Bay area it is hard to find a taproom or brewpub where you can find a pint of draft craft beer for under often than not, you find a ounce pour of some beverage with odd fruit and spice flavors for At Postkeller you will have a wide range of beer choices for well under Euros for a half liter, and a number of options for under Euros. If you come between PM you can get a full liter of one of their beers for Euros. There are some good options to choose from. My wife and I went the other night. I tried two of their Edel Märzen beers. They were Euros each. My wife had the local Mittenwald Dunkel. Just terrific beers. My wife decided on a lighter meal, or so she thought. The omelette with mushrooms and cheese had to be at least three eggs. It came with potatoes and a side salad. This was under Euros. I had the Schweinshaxe (pork hock) with an extra salad. Those two items together were under Euros or less than at current exchange rates. You wouldn't be able to touch that price in the Bay Area. Places that do offer the dish back home don't produce a meal nearly as good. The total tab was under Euros. You are hard pressed to get two burritos and two agua frescas in the Bay Area for this amount. It is just a phenomenal value. I've spent over on dinners for two at home that weren't half as satisfying. There are many other restaurants in Mittenwald that serve similar food. I have been to quite a few of them. All of the ones I have tried serve excellent food at a similar price point, so if you are in the mood for traditional Bavarian food, you have many options. I will just say that all of them are excellent, and it is one of the reasons I have come to Mittenwald for over fifty years. I'm hoping I can make it over years."
