"Not as warm table service as I recall in the past here, but unchanging 19th century decor. There’s a constant flow of tourists who want to see Wellingtons old officer mess, so this is a franchise. We’ve been coming for decades. Mostly for a couple of pints in a weekend afternoon or when heading out for a restaurant meal. Tonight we tried the meal service. It was meant to be a special evening for a 90 year family member who was excited to be visiting us in London. Despite there being three empty tables that would have been fine, we were crammed into a small table that was right next to the crowded bar. The waitress said she was saving the three tables for larger parties, so we dutifully agreed, but we then watched the three more hospitable tables gradually fill up with parties of four. It turns out that Open Table, the firm the runs Grenadiers’ reservation book, doesn’t assign individual tables. We had two orders of duck, billed as a special variety but it was nothing special, fish and chips and a veg entree. One starter of buffalo mozzarella was good. This is not remotely a gastro- pub. Best advice is to stick with the basic pub food you’d expect, like the fish and chips or a hamburger. The chips are the processed kind, delivered frozen from a restaurant supply and formed into chip like shape rather than hand cut. But hand cut prices. The aubergine veg option was not very good. It tasted like leftovers warmed up from the night before after shriveling in the cooler. The dinner bill for one round of drinks (plus an extra pint), three starters and four mains was £173. We didn’t stick around for coffee or dessert because the table was a torture device for someone 6 ft 4. In the past we’ve had many great evenings that started at the Grenadier. That’s something in common with most of the people in the bar, plus the 40 or so who are outside in the cobblestones by 6 most nights. After a few pints and maybe a few crisps or other bar snacks, you move on to a restaurant with great food and a real dining table. Or you save your shillings and get a superior Piri Piri or Big Mac for a lot less than £173 elsewhere. If you eat at the Grenadier, go as simple as possible. Soak in the atmosphere and the good beers on tap like Grenadier bitter but don’t expect a fine dining experience and get the burger or fish and chips."

Great food! We ordered the burrata appetizer and the beef Wellington. Both were terrific. We also enjoyed the Pimm's and lemonade and the local IPA. The best thing about this place is the wonderful bartenders!! Cheers! Voir le carte

This pub is off the beaten track and thank goodness! It’s already a super busy pub because the atmosphere is amazing. The food is sensational. The Beef Wellington is the best I had ever had. Staff are extremely efficient and caring. I’d 100% recommend.

Terrible! Website let me book for 8.45. Paid for taxi to get there only to be informed the kitchen shut at 8. No apology, no complimentary drinks. Now too late to get food elsewhere. Not impressed. WOULDN’T RECOMMEND NOR RETURN. Wouldn’t let me upload proof of booking confirmation email

We had to go to eat elsewhere because “restaurant” doesn’t allow people with dogs inside. They say dogs are allowed in the bar area but it’s tiny, too crowded, and it is certainly not designed for a good dining experience. Shame in 2022 people still don’t like dogs enough to allow them inside. Ours was small and very well-behaved. Voir le carte

We had 2 very nice lunches at this establishment and chose to sit outside. Great service from the waitresses and highly recommend the scallops and truffle fries. Just a shame about our initial greeting. Have you booked and then explained we tried but site wouldn 't accept. Said am happy to sit outside. The reply well you won 't get table service . So ordered our drinks and guess what you get very good table service outside. Thanks to the lovely waitresses

Always wanted to visit a true pub with fish and chips. This place is a historic pub where soldiers gathered. Lost of history and even a haunted tale in the fireplace room. The beers were great but the food was wonderful. True fish and chips with mushy peas. I had tomato soup which was hearty and warming on a cold rainy day. The dessert was a toffee pudding with a caramel sauce. We got it to go and should have gotten a second one for breakfast. We were made welcome and will definitely go back.

"The decor of the restaurant is really lovely. We were greeted as soon as we arrived. We placed our orders quite briskly. We received complimentary bread and olives, which was a nice touch. Our Bruchetta starter arrived a whole hour after we arrived, which was disappointing and far too long to wait for a cold and easy starter. The menu did not specify that the prawns on one of the bruschettas were raw! The waiter said service was slow because they were busy with Uber Eats and Deliveroo. Clearly not prioritising paying customers, who pay a 12.5% service charge, unlike online customers. Eventually, our main courses arrived. My pasta was only just cooked, so close to being undercooked and hard. They ran out of ricotta and replaced it with the tiniest amount of cheese so I asked for some more. Since ricotta was supposed to be the main ingredient of the dish. The tuna steak was lovely, and the veal could have done with a thinner breadcrumb batter. The sides, chips and zucchini, were £4.50 and very small portions for such a cheap side. So that was slightly disappointing. Overall, the pinot grigio white wine was very drinkable, and they brought tap water when we asked for it. And the whole staff were very polite. It was a shame the service was so slow, and the food could have been better for the price that it was. We also felt it was overpriced for the location it was, zone 2 London and not in the West End."
