"Met here with four others on a Sunday morning. Three of us had bought coffee and food and we were all sat at a table whilst a fourth was inside buying food and a drink. One of the group was standing up rummaging through his bag looking for his hat and whilst he did took he took a small hard boiled egg out and ate it as he was still standing. A man (assume the owner) shot out of the cafe and barked aggressively at him “don’t eat your own food at my tables” then shot back inside. We were really taken aback as there was really no need to be so rude and confrontational. The 4th person in our group came out of the cafe with his purchases and reported that the man (cafe owner) had made some really derogatory comments about our hard boiled egg eating felon to him and other customers that had shocked them. We continued eating and drinking our purchases and I showed the group a little tub of foraged berries and nuts I was using for a talk later. I offered everyone a blackberry. Two of the group took one (one being the egg eater). The man shot out of the door immediately, whacked him on the back and shouted really aggressively “I’ve told you not to eat your own food at my tables”. Before we could react he shot back inside. It was pretty horrible and really upset my friend who is a pretty gentle soul who would never in a million years treat someone how he was treated. We finished our food and drinks and left. I understand they don’t want people using their tables for full on picnics but we’d bought quite a bit of drinks and food between us spending £30+ and for God’s sake it was a tiny boiled egg and a berry eaten whilst he was standing up next to the rest of us who were sat down eating our purchased food. Regardless there’s no excuse for bullying behaviour like this. In these times of Covid as a business owner he really shouldn’t be physically touching customers or getting in their faces. No excuse at all."

I stopped off here while cyreneling in the Peaks for brunch. Not only is the good delicious, but it has a lovely unique feel to it friendly and informal. The outside area has an amazing view!

Visited for the first time since the place changed hands. The food was excellent and good value and the service very friendly too. We like the new layout, it definitely seems more spacious. We'll be back.

I've been twice since the new owners took over. It's now exactly what you'd expect when you walk into a quirky, out of the way cafe...A big warm welcome from the locals. The food is lovely, the cakes are huge! and everything is priced very, very reasonably : . It's very dog friendly, and you'll get a very warm welcome from their big black lab.

We stayed at a cottage very nearby so visited the stores a few times over the week. They will cook a breakfast of whatever size you want and it was excellent! Cakes and pastries all top notch too. Definitely try one of their enormous cob rolls.Virus-safe environment although it can get busy in the middle of the day as it's a popular stop-off for walkers, cyclists and bikers.Friendly staff and terrific service. Also a fab friendly black labrador (Indy) that owns the place :D Definitely worth stopping for.

Visited today for late breakfast, heard the food was good, which it was. But the experience was let down by rude miserable staff and a dog that wouldn't leave us alone while we were trying to eat. I am a dog lover, but wouldn't allow my own dog to beg whilst I was eating, so I wouldn't expect it in a food establishment. The dog was literally panting all over us as we were trying to eat. Not good and at no point did the staff call the dogs way. The woman that cooked our food and brought it over really needs to go on a customer service course, and was it really such a big deal that we changed our minds and decided to eat in? After all, it was still being cooked.I hope they take these comments...

"Our room faced the front of the hotel, and while the village was quiet with only two pubs and a small corner store, it seemed to be a shortcut for heavy vehicles speeding downhill at night, with headlights constantly illuminating our room. We also found out that the hotel closes in the evening if it's not busy, and the front door may be locked as early as 10 PM, requiring a code for re-entry. The internet service was poor; even standing just outside the front door, I had no reception and couldn't call the emergency numbers posted there. It appears that the quality of the rooms varies significantly, with some having been upgraded while others are less desirable, including our own. When we questioned our bill because we didn't think the room was worth £140, we were told that since we had booked through Charming Escapes, we should take it up with them, as the hotel receives only a fraction of what we paid. This made us feel like second-class guests, especially since it seemed we were stuck in a low-quality room. The standard rate for a double room is £90, and if I were to rate our experience like on the TV show "Four in a Bed," I would say £50 a night would have been generous. Previous reviews also mentioned an issue with the door handle and the ability to lock the room, which had not been fixed. If you’re just looking for a place to dry off your hiking boots, this hotel might suffice, but I wouldn't recommend staying here again. It has a lot of potential, and thankfully, we had a wonderful evening at The Devonshire Arms just across the street—it felt like a whole different experience. It seems the staff at Charles Cotton have simply given up."
