"An overnight stay in the Gold room at Magpies; a well-appointed comfy room with big en-suite. No car park but parking bays on road directly in front of hotel. Friendly efficient arrival. Good value DB&B. For dinner we were seated in the cosy lounge and...ate 3 amuse bouche whilst browsing the menu of around 8 choices for each course. the dishes had been well thought thought out and provided something a little different from the run-of-the-mill restaurant dishes. An excellent wine list included lots of half bottles – which is good when you and your husband have entirely different tastes in wine. Wine selected and poured, we moved to our table where we were presented with a selection of 4 breads – all warm delicious. I started with the salmon fishcake then a main of cod lobster; my husband chose crab for starter then lamb cannon and hotpot for main. Then onto desserts – chocolate pave and crème brulee, with dessert wine. All delicious! The service was attentive without being obtrusive -a thoroughly enjoyable evening. Would definitely stay and eat here again. Highly recommended"

"Living in the Lincolnshire Wolds finding somewhere nice to eat is a little challenging at times. Yes you can get pub grub but if you are looking for something a little special its difficult. It was our second visit this month on a Thursday evening. Food was excellent , service with a smile from Nicky. Little bit pricey but you would expect that with with the quality of the food and the service. Would highly recommend."

"Every time we visit Horncastle, we always end up at this restaurant. However, the quality of the food and service has become so inconsistent that it's time to try out other dining options. During our most recent visit, we arrived half an hour before closing time and ordered poached eggs on toast. It was not a good sign when the waitress audibly sighed upon taking our order. The eggs were served in a lackluster manner, floating in a pool of vinegar water with runny yolks, accompanied by soggy, cheap Sunblest white bread on the side. The rushed service continued as the waitress, noticing my wife browsing the gifts upstairs, inquired about her whereabouts before checking the time on her watch. While the chef has always been reserved, the food and service used to make up for it. Unfortunately, it now only qualifies as 'good in parts'."

"Booked stayed at this place very recently having read the excellent reviews. As a very level headed person, certainly not delusional I failed in trying to recognise or match the place based on any of the reviews posted on Booking.com The place, whilst very quaint appealing from the outside is in direct contrast to the inside! In reality, it 's very much in dire need of deep cleaning, redecorating and refurbishing. The food, not sure who prepared the meals in the reviews I read, but fail to see how it could be the same chef as the one that cooked ours! Our meals arrived no less than 40 minutes after ordering. The drinks to occupy us while we waited never did arrive when our meals finally arrived served (if slapping on the table warrants being called served three out of the five items that made up the meal were uncooked, cold unedible! The excuse given by the waitress, is far too busy and understaffed, yet despite not being able to fulfil the job paid for, they still take fee paying guests who are treated far less than second class citizens to the regular clientele supping at the bar! Far too busy but not enough to stop them from taking longer than necessary to laugh talking to the regulars! Needless to say, we ate at other places for the rest of our stay. DO NOT BE FOOLED, as we were by the reviews, which have stayed are extremely questionable indeed! If one is used to using hostels I can see this could be deemed as good, if not excellent accommodation. On the flip side, if one is used to hotels that are clean customer focused then this hotel (a grand name for nothing more than a public house with accommodation not a very good or pleasant one at that is not the one for you!!"
